Guerlain – Champs-Elysees Review

Guerlain Champs ElyseesLivia’s Summary: A beautiful sparkling floral fragrance that is very pleasant to wear in the hot summer months. I felt that the fragrance disappeared after a couple of hours but then I actually had a few people ask me what I was wearing as they could smell it as soon as I walked in to the room. So it does last, even if you can’t smell it. I loved wearing it. Definitely have a try of it on your next visit to the perfume counter.

Skin Type:
Normal Skin.

Comments: This is a very fresh, soft perfume. Very nice for summer when you don’t want anything overpowering. It lasted well on my skin. Not one I would have looked at in the past but I’m glad I tried it.
I will get it again for next summer.

Skin Type: Normal Combination

Comments: Yes I liked the smell. It lasts well. It’s a mix of floral and musk. This fragrance is very nice but not my usual style so I wouldn’t buy it.

Skin Type: Normal Skin

Comments: Beautiful perfume. It was a light sweet smell with a heavier base note hinted at. The perfume stayed on well and it was a pleasure to use. I will be definitely getting this again. Loved it.

Skin Type: Extremely sensitive, dry skin

Comments:Very nice pleasant smell. Not too overpowering, which I like. A soft floral perfume with a fresh finish.

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin

Comments: When you first put it on, it can be a little overpowering. But once it settles on your skin, it has a beautiful floral, fresh smell. Unfortunately, I don’t think the perfume smell lasts very long on you, but I do like this and it will be on my list to buy.

Clarins Eye Revive Beauty FlashLivia’s Summary: A very nice addition to the Beauty Flash Balm. I personally loved this product and felt that it delivered just what it promised. Even after a 16 hour flight my eyes still looked fresh. The panelists mostly agreed with me too. This is a very light gel textured eye product with not much fragrance and just about instant results. Definitely one to add to your must try list.

Skin Type: Dry combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: I feel this is good value and I will buy this again.
Comments: I did like this product very much. It did what it claimed as my skin seemed to tighten slightly around my eyes. It felt good to use.

Skin Type: Normal combination.
Value for Money: Most definitely. I loved this product and have already added it to my shopping list.
Comments: This eye cream is smooth and easy to apply, it didn’t sting my eyes. There was no overpowering smell. The area around my eyes isn’t puffy any more and the skin is much smoother. The dark circles under my eyes also look reduced. It helps with the staying power of make-up; my eyes are brighter, firmer. Very impressed with this product.

Skin Type: Dehydrated, Oily Combination Skin
Value for Money: Yes it is; I already use Beauty Flash Balm so this is a nice addition to a great product range.
Comments: The texture of this cream is soft and it makes my skin around my eyes feel lovely and fresh. It is also excellent for reducing puffiness. I didn’t notice much change in my dark circles around my eyes.

Skin Type: Oily Combination, Sensitive.
Value for Money: I don’t think I would buy this again as I feel it promotes more benefits than it delivers.
Comments: Texture was nice to use, light and creamy. It has a pleasant smell and skin feels firmer. Eyes do feel refreshed, but not perfectly hydrated. Doesn’t make a real visible change in appearance of eyes.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: For me it’s not good value as I wasn’t that impressed with the product, so I won’t be buying it.
Comments: It was a nice gel with a gentle smell however I felt that it did absolutely nothing for my eyes. They were exactly the same as before. I think the massaging action upon application probably did more than the gel.

Don’t Brow Beat Yourself – 4 Steps to the Perfect Brow

4 Steps to the Perfect Brow

How do you achieve the perfect brow? For most women it’s a daunting task that is best left to the professionals, for fear of making a mistake. But with a few simple guidelines you can create the perfect brows in the comfort of your own home…

Warning: never ever shave your brows! Not only is the shaved area visible in a day, but you can make mistakes very easily and they are hard to correct.

You have two options for removing the hairs. Waxing and tweezing. Personally, I’m not a big fan of waxing the brows as the skin around the eyes is so delicate and every time you stretch the skin by ripping the wax off, you are causing damage. Having said that, I know a lot of women swear by waxing so it’s really a personal preference.

Step 1Step One -
Always follow your own natural brow line. The purpose of removing hairs is to shape the brows, not change it. The beginning of the brow should align with your nostrils. An easy way to determine this is; hold a pencil next to your nostril pointing to your forehead. That is where the brow should start.

Any hairs in the centre of the brows should be removed. Never over tweeze above the brow. It is OK to remove a few straight hairs but generally above the brow should be left alone.

Step 2Step Two -
Before you even begin pulling hairs out, decide on the thickness of the brows you want. Remember that pencil thin eyebrows are not a good look. Aim for a shapely, natural look. Grab an eyeliner or if you have dark hairs a lip liner so you can clearly see the colour and draw in the desired shape.

This can take a few attempts, but you can always wipe it off with eye makeup remover and start again until you are happy with the shape.

Step 3Step Three -
Any hairs not covered by the pencil, come out. Go slowly so you don’t over tweeze. One hair at a time. Stop regularly and have a look in a large mirror to check your progress. Do one eye roughly then move on to the other. Then compare both eyes to make sure they are even. Keep evening them out one hair at a time, until you are happy with the results.

Step 4

Step Four -
The first time may take a little while to get it right, so allow plenty of time for yourself. Never do it in a rush. Make sure you are in a room that has plenty of natural light. Once you have the desired shape the maintenance of it is very simple. Again, one hair at a time remove the regrowth.

After you have done it a few times for yourself, you can have a
go at your friends’ brows. If you’re game.

Clarins – Extra Firming Day Cream Review

Clarins Extra Firming Day CreamLivia’s Summary: A mixed reaction for this product from our panelists. Overall it was felt that this moisturiser is too expensive for what it is. Nice to use but nothing out of the ordinary. It was also sadly noted that this daytime moisturiser didn’t contain any SPF which in our country is absolutely vital.

Skin Type: Slightly Dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: I personally found this to be too expensive.
Comments: This cream has a very smooth texture and the smell is not too strong which I liked. Overall this was a nice product to use but I didn’t notice any difference in my skin. The cream can be a bit heavy for daytime.

Skin Type: Dry combination.
Value for Money: I feel it is a little bit expensive for 50ml but I will be looking out for it in special packs or with Gift with Purchases.
Comments: My skin definitely felt firmer and my lines and wrinkles were reduced. The cream in nice and light in texture and the smell is light and pleasant.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin
Value for Money: I found this a bit expensive for what it is.
Comments: The texture was ok but I found little change in my complexion or even the firmness in my skin. Unimpressive results from a product that promises so much.

Skin Type: Normal skin.
Value for Money: Good Value.
Comments: A very nice hydrating moisturiser. Nice smooth texture that absorbs well. Not a very strong fragrance which I liked. Not much firming action noticed.

Skin Type: Dry Skin.
Value for Money: This cream is expensive but I would buy this for myself.
Comments: Nice thick texture with a soft hint of perfume. It glides on nicely, leaves skin feeling smooth and moist. It makes my face and skin look better. It would be good to see a good sunscreen in this day cream.

Jurlique – Neck Serum Review

Jurlique Neck SerumLivia’s Summary: Personally I loved this product. If you have lines on your neck or just want to firm the skin make sure you try this product. Our panelists all agreed that they could see an improvement whether it was in the lines or just the texture of the skin.

Description: A beautifully rich, non-greasy, delicately scented cream steeped in Rose Essential Oil. This deep moisturising hand cream provides superior protection against moisture loss and dryness. The soothing formula acts quickly to leave your skin and cuticles velvety soft and supple.

Available:
MYER, David Jones, Jurlique spas and leading pharmacies

Price: $95.00 (50 ml)

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Slightly Dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: It is good value. As I am on a budget I wouldn’t be able to get it on a regular basis but I would definitely get it for myself as a treat.
Comments: It has very pleasant aroma. The liquid texture goes on smoothly and spreads well so you only use a tiny amount at a time. My skin felt smooth and soft instantly.

Skin Type: Normal combination.
Value for Money: It is good value although I’m unsure if I need this product at this stage.
Comments: The neck cream had a lovely smell; it was like applying perfume in liquid form. My neck did change from red to normal skin tone after application so the ingredients are definitely calming and soothing and it did make the skin feel smooth to touch. The skin on my neck is still firm so I feel that prevention is better than a cure.

Skin Type: Dry Skin
Value for Money: Yes it is good value; I would get this product for myself.
Comments: I absolutely loved the smell, loved the feel, it’s thick, smooth and soft. A little goes a long way. My skin felt amazing even after only a few applications.

Skin Type: Extremely sensitive, dry skin.
Value for Money: You really don’t have to use a lot of this product so it lasts a long time so it is very good value.
Comments: I loved this serum. Just after the first application my skin showed a huge improvement in the deep lines on my neck. It softens the lines straight away and my skin felt smoother all around. A lasting improvement was also noticed. A truly fantastic product.

Skin Type: Oily Combination, Sensitive.
Value for Money: It is good value as you use it sparingly.
Comments: I probably wouldn’t get this for myself until I got a bit older as I think this is more of a luxury treatment than a necessary treatment. Don’t be scared by the apricoty appearance of the gel, the smell is subtle & nice. Use this very sparingly, a little goes a long way. At first I couldn’t see much difference but afterwards my neck began to feel tighter. It was great & I can definitely see how this would have long term effects. I would buy it as a treat to myself.

Jurlique Hand CreamLivia’s Summary: What can I say about this hand cream? It got glowing reviews from all our panelists who by the sound of things became lifelong converts. This cream has been a long-time favourite of mine so I was very happy to see it so well received. It comes in two fragrances: rose and lavender, so my only comment is; it would be nice to see some new fragrances added to the range. But I’m just being picky now.

Description: A beautifully rich, non-greasy, delicately scented cream steeped in Rose Essential Oil. This deep moisturising hand cream provides superior protection against moisture loss and dryness. The soothing formula acts quickly to leave your skin and cuticles velvety soft and supple.

Available:
MYER, David Jones, Jurlique spas and leading pharmacies

Skin Type: Slightly Dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: Yes, this product is worth buying.
Comments: This hand cream has a beautiful smell; it absorbs really well and has a lovely texture. I enjoyed using it.

Skin Type: Dry combination.
Value for Money: Very good value for money for the quality of the product, I am always going to have this with me.
Comments: I had the Rose Hand Cream. My hands felt beautifully soft straight away. If applied at night they still feel soft the following morning. This is a non greasy hand cream and has a beautiful natural rose smell. I was very impressed with this cream.

Skin Type: Normal Skin
Value for Money: It is good value, I will most definitely buy this again.
Comments: Beautiful hand cream. The texture of the cream is very fine and the smell is divine. It left my skin begging for more. It was a pleasure to use, smoothing the texture of my hands and really hydrating them. It is also good to know that it’s a natural product.

Skin Type: Extremely sensitive, dry skin.
Value for Money: This is great value and it is definitely on my shopping list. One for home and one for my handbag.
Comments: This made a huge difference in my skin. I used it all the way to my elbows. After my skin got a bit sunburnt it helped reduce the redness with no peeling. It softens the skin amazingly and absorbs very well. Not greasy at all.

Skin Type: Oily Combination, Sensitive.
Value for Money: Yes, definitely good value, I will have this cream with me at all times.
Comments: This smells divine. It is thick but melts straight into skin. My skin feels lusciously soft & moisturised. I love it. It is the perfect low maintenance hand cream 10/10.

Johnson’s – Holiday Skin Body Review

June 25, 2007 by admin

Johnson's Holiday SkinLivia’s Summary: I have to say I was very disappointed with the results of this product. I had such high hopes. As I have a slightly olive complexion, it just bought out the yellow in my skin making it very unbecoming. I couldn’t continue using it after 2 days. Unfortunately most of our panelist has similar experiences.

Description: Why should tanned and glowing skin be something you have just after your summer holiday? Now, thanks to Johnson’s Holiday Skin Body Lotion you can have a light tan all year round. Johnson’s have added a small amount of tanning ingredient to their best body lotion. So whilst leaving your skin moisturised and soft all day it also gradually builds a beautiful, light and even looking tan.

Available:
MYER, David Jones, Priceline, Target, K-Mart and leading pharmacies

Price: $7.99 (250ml)

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry combination, dehydrated skin.
Value for Money: This is great value, very affordable. Definitely buy this again.
Comments: This lotion is light to put on, has a gentle fragrance and makes your body look so smooth. I already have a tan so the tanning effect wasn’t too noticeable, just gave a smooth even look.

Skin Type: Normal combination.
Value for Money: This is value for money but I wouldn’t purchase it.
Comments: I’m not a big fan of fake tan even though I would love to have beautifully tanned skin. I found this was easy to apply and did notice a change in skin colour with no streaking. However on day 4 I noticed that my skin had a slight yellow tone rather than a nice brown one. After I shaved my legs it was back to square one.

Skin Type: Normal Skin
Value for Money: It is good value but it’s definitely not for me..
Comments: This cream for a moisturiser felt very watery and grainy. The smell whilst pleasant was too much and smelt very chemically. I personally would not use it again. I couldn’t see any difference in my skin colour as I’m already tanned, and it didn’t darken my tan.

Skin Type: Dehydrated, Oily Combination Skin
Value for Money: For the size of the product it is good value but I won’t be buying it.
Comments: My only positive comment about this product is that it has no smell. Other than that I was very disappointed. It left my skin yellow and blotchy instead of the healthy glow I was expecting. My skin became so yellow I looked jaundiced. I was embarrassed to leave the house. I found that it also gathered in the creases of the skin such as inside of arms making it look dirty.

Skin Type: Oily Combination, Sensitive.
Value for Money: Great value for money but I probably won’t be buying this again.
Comments: Product was nice & thin, easily applied however the “tan” smell seemed to get stronger as the lotion sunk into my skin. My skin felt like it had a film on it afterwards – like it wasn’t fully absorbed properly. When showering I could feel the lotion washing off. Produces a nice glow but doesn’t absorb well into the skin for me. Overall, not a very impressive product.

Skin Type: Dry combination, dehydrated skin.
Value for Money: It is very good value for money under $10.00. I will buy this again.
Comments: I loved this product very much. It was a nice light cream that smelt nice too. My skin felt very smooth after using this moisturiser. The tanning effect was nice and light and it was even nice under my foundation.

Skin Type: Normal combination.
Value for Money: Yes it is good value for money for the size you get, but I wouldn’t buy this product.
Comments: This didn’t make my skin go yellow; actually I didn’t notice much change at all. I didn’t like it as a moisturizer; it didn’t make me feel refreshed after application. However the smell was yummy, after using the body lotion and face moisturizer I thought I smelt like a basket of fruit.

Skin Type: Normal Skin
Value for Money: It is good value but it’s definitely not for me.
Comments: I personally didn’t like this product and only hesitantly applied it to my face. It just felt very processed and full of stuff that is bad for you. I prefer natural products and this was far from it. The fragrance in this cream was too overpowering. Didn’t like it at all.

Skin Type: Dehydrated, Oily Combination Skin
Value for Money: It would be good value if you liked the product.
Comments: Very disappointing results as it left my skin yellow and blotchy instead of the healthy holiday glow I was expecting.

Skin Type: Oily Combination, Sensitive.
Value for Money: Average price, not on my shopping list.
Comments: This felt a little oily on application, felt like it blocked my pores. I have sensitive skin and it gave me tiny pimples. Not much smell which was quite pleasant. Ordinary product.

INNOXA – Enriching Cleansing Duo Review

June 22, 2007 by admin

Innoxa Enriching Cleansing Duo Livia’s Summary: The fragrance was mentioned about this cleanser quite a lot. Unfortunately it really bothered some people. So make sure you can live with it before buying it. Other than that, the texture and cleansing ability was liked. This is a cream cleanser for dry skins so if you like foaming cleansers try an other cleanser. It was also noted by our panelists that you have to use a separate cleanser for the eyes as it does sting the eyes.

Description: A silky smooth textured, rinse off cleansing cream with gentle toning properties. This gentle, yet deeply cleansing formula removes all make-up and impurities.
Contains:
Witch Hazel tones and soothes skin, while preparing it to accept further treatments. Silk amino acids moisturise the skin. Sweet almond, rice bran and neroli oils soften and pamper the skin.

Skin Type: Dry combination Skin.
Value for Money: I would definitely buy this for myself, it is very good value.
Comments: This is a very good cleansing cream that I enjoyed trying. My skin felt fully cleansed and comfortable. It also has a very nice fragrance.

Skin Type: Dry combination, dehydrated skin
Value for Money: This is very good value, I will be buying this again.
Comments: I felt that the cleansing cream was very watery putting it on my face and it required a lot of cream. Apart from that, after massaging it into my face and rinsing it off, my skin felt very clean and fresh because it had removed all my makeup. I quite liked this cleanser.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin
Value for Money: This is good value for money but I wasn’t that impressed with this cleanser so I wouldn’t buy it for myself.
Comments: I didn’t like the smell or the texture. Plus you have to be careful not get it in your eyes as it really burns. I prefer cleansers that lather up, so this is not for me.

Skin Type: Dry Skin
Value for Money: This would be good value but I don’t think I would get it for myself because of the smell.
Comments: It took off all my make up, works well and cleans really well. My face feels smooth and dirt free. I hated the smell; it was really over powering and really put me off the product.

Skin Type: Slightly dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: No this is not good value as you have to buy a separate cleanser for the eyes.
Comments: The texture and feel of the cleanser is good and the skin felt clean after washing it off but the smell of it was awful. It stayed with me for a few hours. It does not remove all makeup as eye makeup has to be removed separately. I prefer a cleanser that cleans the whole face in one application.

David Jones – High Shine Lip Gloss Review

David Jone Lip GlossLivia’s Summary: Great to see a budget product get mostly such good reviews. Everyone generally liked this lip gloss and the colour selection in the range is very good too. I found it stayed on my lips just as well, if not better than some much more expensive glosses.

Description: High shine lip gloss. Wear alone or over lip pencil.

Available:
David Jones

Price: $9.95 (15ml)

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dehydrated, Oily Combination.
Value for Money: Yes it’s very good value, I will be buying the more colours in the range.
Comments: The colour is beautiful, the texture is not sticky and it stays on the lips for a few hours. The smell initially in the tube is not great however it has no smell once it is on your lips. The taste is not that nice.

Skin Type: Normal Combination
Value for Money: Yes this is reasonable for the amount you get; I would buy this product again.
Comments: This lip gloss is really thick, however it doesn’t stay on very long, and regular application is required. I loved the style of the packaging – straight from the bottle to my lips (just squeeze). It made my lips look very shiny and I did get comments on it throughout the day.

Skin Type: Dehydrated, Oily Combination
Value for Money: Yes it’s very good value, I will be buying the more colours in the range.
Comments: The colour is beautiful, the texture is not sticky and it stays on the lips for a few hours. The smell initially in the tube is not great however it has no smell once it is on your lips. The taste is not that nice.

Skin Type: Normal Skin
Value for Money: No it’s not good value, I wasn’t impressed.
Comments: The texture was quite gritty due to the shimmer, and it also felt watery so it came off very easily. The colour was subtle. Personally I didn’t think it was the greatest gloss I’ve used. The smell was nice.

Skin Type: Dry combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: I would absolutely buy this again; it is fantastic value for under $10.00.
Comments: I absolutely loved this lip gloss (so did my 3 year old daughter)! I loved the high shine and because of the slight colour in the gloss, I didn’t feel like I needed to wear lipstick when I went out to do the shopping. The lip gloss looks as good as or even better than lipstick. It also has a beautiful smell. I loved it.

INNOXA – Eye Liner Pencil

Innoxa Eye Liner PencilLivia’s Summary: This is a good quality eyeliner that was pleasant to use. It’s gentle on the delicate skin around the eyes and it is also suitable for the sensitive skin types.

Description: A soft textured eye lining kohl pencil that enhances and defines the eyes.

Available:
MYER, David Jones and leading pharmacies
Stockist Phone Number: 1800 025 607.

Price: $17.95 AUD

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Normal.
Value for Money: Yes it is good value. The eyeliner will last a very long time.
Comments: This is a very soft eyeliner. Glides on easily without dragging the delicate skin around the eyes and it didn’t bother my eyes at all. Very nice to use.

Skin Type: Normal Combination
Value for Money: The price is average for an eye liner, but I liked using it so I would get this for myself.
Comments: The blending applicator was easy to use. The eye liner glided on easy and felt soft and it lasted the whole day. It was nice to use.

Skin Type: Dehydrated, Oily Combination
Value for Money: Yes it is good value. It’s what I normally spend on eyeliners.
Comments: Easy application, it glides on easily. The smudge foam is a great addition to the pencil for smoky effects.

Skin Type: Normal Skin
Value for Money: Average price but a nice product so occasionally I might buy this again.
Comments: The kohl went on very smoothly allowing me to vary the thickness of the drawn line. The colour was nice and solid on application however within 2 hours it had migrated into the creases of my eyes. Also on a hot day it would smudge and melt very quickly.

Skin Type: Dry combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Not really. I probably would not buy this.
Comments: To me this seemed just like any other eye liner. If you already use other products from the brand you might as well use the eyeliner but there is nothing special about it to make you go out of your way to get it.

Clinique – Liquid Facial Soap Review

June 20, 2007 by admin

Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Livia’s Summary: I have been using the Clinique soap for a long time so it was interesting to see the difference between the bar and the liquid form. Personally I’m not a great believer in cleansing twice as the soap is not a makeup remover, it is a skin cleanser. Having said that, on days when I don’t wear makeup it is a fantastic cleanser to just wash the face with.
The soap bar is excellent value as it lasts me a full year but I don’t think you will get the same time out of the liquid soap. On the other hand this is a lot more convenient to keep in the shower and take with you when travelling. Maybe I’ll just have to have both.

Description: All the benefits of Clinique’s famous dermatologist-developed facial soap in a liquid formula. Preps skin for the exfoliating action of Clarifying Lotion. Convenient pump dispenses just the right amount.

Available:
MYER, David Jones, Clinique Service Centres and leading pharmacies.

Price: $28.00

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Oily Combination, Sensitive.
Value for Money: Average price, not really sure if I would buy this again.
Comments: Nice creamy texture, light & easy to apply to face, no real smell – love that! My skin felt a little tight and dry afterwards & stung a little, so because of that I wouldn’t purchase it. Otherwise a nice product.

Skin Type: Normal Combination
Value for Money: Yes I feel it is good value and I would get this face wash again.
Comments: It doesn’t have a strong smell, its light and only the smallest amount is needed. The soap lathers really well and leaves my face clean and shiny. Afterwards my face doesn’t feel really dry like it does with other soaps. Another one to add to the shopping list.

Skin Type: Extremely sensitive, dry skin
Value for Money: Good value as you only use a small amount. I will buy this soap again to keep in my shower.
Comments: It did not irritate my skin at all. It felt nice to wash my skin with it, not drying at all. My skin felt ready to be moisturised afterwards.

Skin Type: Mature, Combination Skin
Value for Money: Yes this is value for money and I would buy this for myself.
Comments: I didn’t like the smell, but it cleans the face beautifully. Very soft and smooth to touch. Excellent for some one like me that has trouble with some soaps reacting to the skin. This didn’t cause any sensitivity at all.

Skin Type: Dry combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: I don’t think this is good value, I won’t be buying it.
Comments: I wasn’t very impressed with this product. I didn’t think it lathered very well and I couldn’t see anything special about it.

If you want a natural looking mascara try an other one. I personally loved it. It didn’t flake at all so it would be suitable for contact lens wearers and nobody had any irritations from it, so it would be suitable for sensitive skins too.

Description: High Impact Mascara is a multi-benefit mascara that adds maximum volume with definition and length effortlessly. Specially developed brush and formula work together to dramatically thicken lashes while combing for separation.

Skin Type: Oily Combination, Sensitive.
Value for Money: It is good value, I would buy it for myself and also I would give it as a gift
Comments: This mascara is quite thick, but didn’t clump like I expected, goes on so easy, defines almost every lash & lengthens awesomely, without making my lashes look fake. Loved it, very impressed. It comes off easily with make up remover.

Skin Type: Normal Combination
Value for Money: I wouldn’t usually spend this much on mascara, and it didn’t wow me.
Comments: This mascara glides on nicely, has good coverage. I found it stayed on well, and washed of easy enough. I don’t think it added volume to my lashes, and after the first few days it did clog a little. The mascara did make my lashes stand out and look longer.

Skin Type: Normal Skin
Value for Money: It is good value for money and I would buy it.
Comments: The mascara was very nice to apply, the colour was thick so it lengthened well but the actual liquid did not thicken the lashes so a natural look is achieved. Beware of water with this mascara, it comes off very easily. I liked using it because it felt very soft and not harsh on your lashes.

Skin Type: Dehydrated, Oily Combination Skin
Value for Money: I think it is a little pricey but I will buy it in the future.
Comments: Very beautiful mascara that does what it claims. It was very nice to use.

Skin Type: Dry combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Yes it is. If I was splurging on a mascara then yes I would buy it for myself.
Comments: The mascara went on very well. It did exactly what it says it does and my lashes did look long, even though they’re not. The mascara wasn’t cloggy at all when it went on my lashes. I enjoyed using it; it is a very good mascara.

The Art of Bathing Well

June 17, 2007 by admin

Just recently I found out that a few hotels including The Hermitage Hotel in Nashville, America are offering “Bath Concierges”. I’m not kidding. If you want a perfect bath, they will come up to your room and run you one. They are trained in the art of a perfect bath.

This got me thinking. In our busy lifestyle, how do you find the time to take a bath? It is so much easier and faster to just jump in the shower and be done with it. But you know what? You and I MUST make the time for baths! I only really began to appreciate baths and their value when a few years ago we moved to an apartment with only a shower.

I guess the old saying of “you don’t miss it until it’s gone” applied to me. I started to crave having baths. From then on it was on top of my list whenever looking at real-estate. The ancient civilisations certainly appreciated the value of baths. Cleopatra was known for her milk baths. The Romans built elaborate bathing houses and made it a social event. The Japanese have created elaborate bathing rituals. So did they know something we don’t?

Oprah talks about making your bathroom your private sanctuary. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate bathroom. All you really need is a lockable door and a bathtub. Here are a few tips on how to have the perfect baths: Test the water temperature with your wrist. This is the most sensitive part of your body. You don’t want the water to be too hot or cold.

The perfect length of a bath is 10-15 minutes. After that your skin starts to wrinkle and your water gets cold. It is always good to have a bottle of water available since a warm or hot bath can be dehydrating. Be sure to sip water if you feel the need. Some people prefer a glass of red wine, champagne or port to help relax. Or you can have a cup of green tea or even chamomile tea to help you relax. Lock your door, turn the lights off and light as many candles as you can. (Candles are essential as they affect your mood) Support your head with a bath pillow or a folded up towel. Pick a nice relaxing CD, close your eyes and enjoy your peace and quiet.

Also you can get quite creative with aromatherapy. Smell a lot of different essential oils, pick 3 of your favourites and mix them together. Usually 5 drops of each is enough. You can drop the oils straight in the water where they will float on top and evaporate. Or if you want to absorb them more, you can dispense them through the water by mixing them with a base carrier oil such as jojoba, sweet almond or evening primrose oil.

Some of my favourite oils are: Bergamot, Cedar wood, Chamomile, Frankincense, Juniper, Lavender, Nerolli, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang-Ylang, Jasmin, Orange, Mandarin, Lemon and Grapefruit.

Of course if you really want to get decadent, you can also throw in a few handfuls of rose petals. If you don’t have rose petals handy, try one of these gorgeous soaps by Trance. They have dried flower petals in them. I love “Roses ‘r’ Red” with ylang-ylang, rose geranium and lime oils with dried rose petals on top. Or try “All Woman” with lavender, ylang-ylang and patchouli oils topped of with ping geranium petals.

If you really want a quick no fuss but still extraordinary bathing experience, try one of the ‘bathmelts’ from Lush. My two favourites are “In the Nude” with lavender, chamomile and rose oils, and “Dreamtime” with lavender, sandalwood, Jasmin, chamomile and Jasmin flowers. When it comes to aromatherapy you are only limited by your imagination. Experiment, try new things indulge your senses with fragrances, textures and sounds.

I call having a bath a ‘Wakeup call to your senses’. Enjoy spending these 10-15 minutes by yourself to either relax or rejuvenate.

I guarantee you; you will thank yourself for it.

Price: $9.99

Overall Rating

Skin Type:
Dry Skin.
Value for Money: No I would not pay $9.99 and no I don’t think it is value for money
Comments: This is a nice product and it goes on easy but I found it to be too thick as an eyeliner, but as a shadow it looks good. It is OK but I prefer normal eye shadows so I would not buy it for myself

Skin Type: Normal Combination
Value for Money: Average Cost
Comments: Unusual product. It’s nice as a daytime eyeliner but I didn’t like it as a shadow. It makes eyeliner easy to apply as it already gives that blended look. I like the ease of use but an eyeliner pencil would last much longer.

Skin Type: Oily Combination Sensitive Skin
Value for Money: It is good value for money and I would buy it.
Comments: As an eye shadow this product is good, goes on easily, the concept is great and it sticks to eyelids well. Very light texture. As an eyeliner it didn’t spread evenly so I wouldn’t use it for that. This is a great product for travelling or the handbag; it’s an easy, mess-free eye shadow.

Skin Type: Normal Skin
Value for Money: It is good value
Comments: Easy to apply and soft enough to move the shadow. I used it as a chunky liner but it can be used as a shadow.

Skin Type: Dry combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: I would buy this again.
Comments: I absolutely loved this product. The blue colour was a change for me and it looked great. It also lasted all day and by the evening it still looked as good as it did when I first applied it in the morning.

How to Identify Your Skin Type

June 10, 2007 by admin

Skin TypeOne of the most frequently asked questions I get is: “How do I know what skin type I am?” Firstly, our skin is the largest organ yet one we rarely give any thought to or know much about. Yet skin should be our most prized asset. Not only does it cover our bodies but also it is the canvas that we present to the world. Therefore we are all interested to some extent in how to keep it in the best state we can. However our skin’s needs change with age, health problems, smoking, stress, sun exposure, hormonal changes and even with the change of seasons.

Consequently, it is very important to understand our skin and identify our skin type in order to meet its changing needs. For some women this is easy, they are reasonably aware of their skin type; for other women it’s a complete mystery. What’s more, we don’t always fit neatly into the categories. Because our skin is a living organism it is always changing and responding to either internal or external changes. Skin types are divided into five categories. These descriptions are a guide only and not set in stone. Just as everyone is unique so is your skin.

NORMAL SKIN: Has an even tone and smooth texture. The pores are generally not visible but occasional breakouts may be experienced as well as some blackheads. There are no flaky patches and no oily areas.

SENSITIVE SKIN: Has a delicate appearance and is commonly dry. Pores are invisible and red spots are common. Skin is easily irritated by water, detergents, cosmetics and even temperature changes, amongst other things. Exposure to these things can result in redness, a rash, itching, stinging, or burning. Sensitive skin has a tendency to develop swollen or broken capillaries as well as allergies. It also sunburns easily.

DRY SKIN: Has a fine texture and is transparent looking. It feels tight and drawn without moisturizer and tends to have fine lines around the eyes and mouth. Dry skin is caused by a lack of natural moisturizers within our skin or by damage to the protective film that prevents moisture loss from within our skin. This can be exaggerated by wind, sun, air-conditioning and the change of seasons, all of which cause the skin to feel taut, flake and chap.

OILY SKIN: Has an overproduction of oil which results in frequent spots, blemishes and blackheads. Pores are generally large and the skin’s texture is thicker and coarser then the other skin types. Skin tends to be shiny but can also dehydrate due to harsh cleansing.

COMBINATION SKIN: Almost everyone has, to some extent a combination of these skin types. The nose, chin, and center of the forehead all have more oil glands than the other parts of the face. These areas tend to be oilier and break out more frequently than other areas. Using this guide should make it easier for you to determine your skin type and in turn help choose your cosmetics.

But use this as a guide only. I have dehydrated combination skin and every cosmetics salesperson I talk to tries to sell me gel cleansers for combination skin. Normally I like gel cleansers however sometimes I find these leave my skin too taught and dry. I have found a fantastic cream cleanser for dry skin which works extremely well for me without feeling greasy or oily. You know your skin the best so never let someone talk you into buying products that you don’t like, even if it’s the right product for your skin type; it might not be the right product for you.

How to Soak Away Your Pains with Epson Salts

June 3, 2007 by admin

I have long been a fan of Epsom salts as an affordable and easy beauty treatment. According to this website it’s not only myself that is singing Epsom salts praise. Fashion model Stephanie Seymour and domestic guru Martha Stewart are also big fans. Why? The website informs us that Magnesium is the second-most abundant element in human cells and the fourth-most important positively charged ion in the body. Magnesium, a major component of Epsom Salt, and is vital for many bodily functions, from muscle control and electrical impulses to energy production and the elimination of toxins.

Bath* Raising the body’s level of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of well being and relaxation.

* Offsetting excess levels of adrenaline generated by pressure and stress; magnesium ions relax and reduce irritability by lowering the affects of adrenaline.

* Helping to regulate the electrical functions that spark through miles of nerves.

* Lowering blood pressure.

Researchers have found that magnesium also increases energy and stamina by encouraging the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy packets made in the cells. Experts recommend soaking with Epsom Salt at least three times a week to look better, feel better and have more energy.

Magnesium can be taken internally or you can get the same benefits from soaking in a bath with magnesium sulfate crystals, commonly known as Epsom Salt. Researchers and physicians tell us that raising your magnesium levels may improve your heart and circulation and will lower blood pressure. It will help flush the toxins and heavy metals from the body. Most importantly it helps to reduce stress.

Magnesium is necessary for the body to bind adequate amounts of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of well being and relaxation. Researchers have found that magnesium also increases energy and stamina. So how do you use this wonderful product? There are several ways.

For a relaxing soak: Add two cups of Epsom Salt to the water in a bathtub; soak for at least 12 minutes, three times weekly. For an extra treat, add a few drops of essential oil such as lavender, sandalwood, or patchouli.

For a cleanser and exfoliant: Massage handfuls of Epsom Salt over your wet skin, starting with the feet and continuing up toward the face. Then, pour two cups into a bath of warm water. Lean back and relax. As you soak, the natural action of Epsom Salt helps soften the rough, dry patches of your skin. For a

Spa treatment: After showering, massage handfuls of Epsom Salt over wet skin to exfoliate the body. It’s the same treatment many upscale spas use, without the upscale price!

For a hair treatment: Combine 3 tablespoons of deep conditioner with 3 tablespoons of Epsom Salt. Microwave the mixture for 20 seconds. Work the warm mixture through your hair from scalp to ends and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Promotes body and life in your hair and restores curl to permed hair.

So with this many benefits and uses, make sure you add Epsom Salts to your next shopping list. It is only a few dollars and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Skin Type: Normal Combination
Value for Money: Even though I like this product I am not into really shiny lips so I probably wouldn’t buy this product.
Comments: It gives lips an all over shine (really shinny). It is nice on its own and to add a bit of shine to my current lip color. It goes on easy. Didn’t have much color to it. Even though it looks a pinkly brown in the container, it goes on more as a clear with a slight enhancement of color. Definitely a day gloss on its own. It came off when drinking and or eating, but is easy to reapply without going to the bathroom.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin
