Clinique – Repairwear Anti-Aging Makeup SPF 15 Review

July 14, 2007 by admin

Clinique RepairwareLivia’s Summary: This foundation is a good addition to the Clinique foundation range. It is a full coverage makeup which might not be to everyone’s liking especially these days when we prefer the more natural look. However the foundation is very pleasant to use having a faint fragrance and a little certainly goes a long way. It is great to see a foundation in a pump bottle too as this not only keeps the product fresh but also makes application easier.

Description: There’s no longer a place for wrinkles to hide. The skin experts at Clinique have furthered their commitment to repairing the appearance of wrinkles with the creation of a foundation that complements the enormously successful REPAIRWEAR franchise. Specifically created for women with dry and mature skin, REPAIRWEAR ANTI-AGING MAKEUP SPF 15 goes to work with a high degree of moisturization, reducing the look of lines and wrinkles. Now Clinique provides a complete and comprehensive approach to repairing the appearance of damage and age.

Available:David Jones, Myer, pharmacies and Clinique Centres.

Price: $65.00

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: Quite pricey for a foundation, I would not purchase it for myself.
Comments: This foundation is creamy, and gives a full coverage. I think it’s good for dry skin, could cover all fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone easily. My face feels smooth and last all day. I may buy it in a few years time as now I prefer a medium, natural looking foundation instead of this full coverage foundation.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: It is a bit more than I normally would spend on a foundation but I loved it so much I will be buying it again.
Comments: The foundation felt very smooth and soft on my skin. I found the colour blends in well with my skin colour. I am very pleased with that because it has been hard for me to find the right colour. It is also a good coverage so much so, that I don’t need to use a separate concealer. It also lasts all day on my skin.

Skin Type: Normal Oily Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I wouldn’t buy this foundation as it was too heavy for me.
Comments:
The packaging was good and I really liked the pump pack and the sunscreens. This foundation was very thick and gave full coverage when applied. A little goes a long way and one pump did my entire face. This foundation is quite difficult to apply evenly and I found that it was a bit cakey and clung to dry areas of my skin but melted on oily areas (t-zone). Foundation did not last all day. I think this foundation would be suited more to dry skin types that need extra moisturization and prefer a full coverage.

Skin Type: Normal Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Good value, will buy it again.
Comments: The anti-aging make-up goes on smoothly and gives me a glow without caking thru the day. I find it gives the coverage I need without heaviness which is my key requirement when I purchase. I use 2 other brands I like, EA & Chanel, and as they are all of similar price I would buy this again but regarding durability I find this is 2nd best after Chanel.

Skin Type:Dry Skin.
Value for Money: No, I felt it is a little too expensive for me.
Comments: It felt very dry when applying the foundation and it felt dry once it was on too. It does give good coverage though and it lasts all day.

Pros: Full coverage, anti-aging foundation, pump bottle.

Cons: May be too heavy for some, Low SPF rating.

Jane Iredale- PureMoist LipColours (SPF18) Review

July 14, 2007 by admin

Description: *Our lipsticks contain no synthetic dyes. We only color with iron oxides and carmine.
*Lips lack oil glands. Our conditioning, moisturizing formula is designed to be a drink for your lips.
*Lips burn. Our unique formula contains edible zinc for full-spectrum sun protection of an SPF 18.

* For a natural look, choose a LipColour that harmonizes with your blush. Or use the blush as a lip liner. Try Jane LipColour and Whisper blush, or Sharon LipColour with Sheer Honey blush.

Available: For stockists call 1300 850 008 or visit: www.janeiredale.com

Price: $36.00

Livia’s Comments:A pleasure to try a product from the Jane Iredale range. Their mineral product range is quite impressive and they are suitable for even very sensitive skins. The lipsticks were certainly well received by our panellists. The SPF 18 is also appreciated. The colour does have to be reapplied regularly; however that is a small price to pay for a quality product. It also left the lips very moisturised.

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry Extremely Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money:
It is good value because this lipstick doesn’t contain any irritating ingredients; therefore it is worth paying the money for it.
Comments:
Great to find a lipstick that I can wear without any allergic reactions. The texture of the lipstick is quite soft and moist. The colour lasts about a couple of hours and then I needed to reapply but I was very impressed with the quality overall.

Skin Type: Normal Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money:
A little expensive for a lipstick.
Comments:
It is great to see a lipstick that has no synthetic dyes. Colours are very intense, applied on very well and felt soft on my lips. It also tasted nice when lips were licked.

Skin Type: Normal Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money:
A little bit on the expensive side. I would buy it for a special occasion.
Comments:
First application feels luxurious on the lips. Lips feel moist but not uncomfortable. It lasted quite a while but not the whole day. It comes in a beautiful gold case, easy to carry with you and presents well for those special occasions. I prefer a stick lipstick as you don’t have fiddle with applicators in crowded bathrooms. Product and packaging get a thumbs up.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money:
Very good value for a natural lipstick.
Comments:
Very soft creamy texture. It went on really well and it even moisturised my lips. They felt very soft after use. The color is intense but due to it’s creamy texture, I felt that I needed to use a lip liner with it. Overall I loved using it.

Skin Type: Dry Skin.
Value for Money:
Yes it is good value and I will be looking to buy it once I ran out.
Comments:
This lipstick feels smooth, glides on easily and looks great. My lips have never felt so soft. However it does not last the whole day.

Pros: Moisturising lipstick, SPF 18.

Cons: Needs to be reapplied regularly.

Estee Lauder- Stress Relief Eye Mask Review

July 14, 2007 by admin

Estee Lauder Stres Relief Eye MaskLivia’s Summary: A great pick-me-up product to have on hand at home. I found the pre soaked pads very handy to apply before a night out, and the next day there was a definite improvement in the puffiness department. The cost was mentioned by most panelists and the suggestion given that the pads should be sold individually or even in pairs.

Description: A revitalizing, 10-minute mask treatment for the tell-tale under-eye area. The perfect treat after long days, long nights, in-flight or whenever you need to “de-stress.” Visibly reduces puffiness and other signs of fatigue. Improves hydration up to 40%, with benefits lasting up to 6 hours. Pre-moistened pads hydrate and soothe skin with targeted anti-stress, anti-fatigue ingredients, including Aloe Vera and Cucumber.

Available: David Jones, Myer, pharmacies

Price: $60.00

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: $60 sounds expensive. However $6 each doesn’t. I wouldn’t buy a pack, but if sold individually I would get a couple for those special occasions.
Comments: The eye mask was easy to apply and once the mask was in place it seemed to blend in (no scary face mask!!!) the pads felt cool and comfortable. There was no overpowering smell. I used mine before going to bed, and even after a restless night I didn’t wake up to puffy eyes. I personally think this is a great pick me up for the eyes. It prevents puffiness and leaves under the eyes smooth and silky.

Skin Type: Normal Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: A bit pricey but good product to have on hand.
Comments: I loved this product; it did help my eye area. I felt it reduced puffiness and moisturised my eye area. It left the area feeling soft and firm also smooth, reducing any fine lines. I do however feel this product is quite expensive for only 10 masks; maybe they could package it a little better in that you have options to buy less to make it more affordable. It also smelt beautiful.

Skin Type: Dry combination, dehydrated skin.
Value for Money: In my opinion, it’s a bit pricey and wouldn’t purchase it for myself.
Comments:
This is something that you really have to make time for. But, I guess there’s nothing wrong with that! These pre-soaked pads were refreshing to have on. They were very thin and wet and made the skin under my eyes tighten. I don’t think there was anything outstanding about this product though and wouldn’t buy it for myself.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I found this product to be out of my price range for everyday use, however for a pick me up or special occasion I would splurge.
Comments: The eye mask instantly refreshes the eye area and reduces puffiness. The pre-moistened pads keep the serum on the skin for longer which helps tighten up under the eye area.

Skin Type: Dry Skin.
Value for Money: Personally I think it is very expensive.
Comments: Unfortunately I did not notice any benefits after using these Eye masks.

Pros: Very good for puffiness, refreshing.

Cons: Cost.

MAC- Manicure Remover Wipes 10 Pack Review

July 14, 2007 by admin

MAC WipesLivia’s Summary: A great convenient product to have when travelling. These nail polish remover packets are not a huge seller for the company however it is very handy to know they are available when you are pressed for space in your luggage. They are very handy to have on you in emergencies (as all us glam girls tend to have from time to time).

Description: Nail lacquer remover in a wipe! Each manicure wipe moistened with nail remover and packed in its own airtight pakette. Modern and efficient. Each manicure wipes comes in a box of ten.

Available: Myer & MAC Retailer

Price: $17.00 (10 Pack)

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: A lot of money for a nail polish remover, not for me but would be good when travelling.
Comments: A safe way to keep nail polish remover in the house and great for people on the move. However, the smell of chemicals was really strong, it emptied the room. The size of the pad was too big so the remover went all over my fingers and hands (leaving them very dry). I needed more than one to completely remove all trace of nail polish from both hands.

Skin Type: Dry Extremely Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: $ 17.00 is a lot for nail polish remover.
Comments: A good idea for the busy woman. You can do your nails anywhere now. It took the polish off quite well.

Skin Type: Dry combination, dehydrated skin.
Value for Money: No, I would prefer the remover in a bottle as it is much cheaper and more effective.
Comments:
I thought the towelette was too small and you would have to go through a lot of them to do both your hand and toe nails. Also it took quite a bit of pressure and rubbing of my nails before the nail polish was removed. I think I’ll be sticking with my usual remover. Not impressed at all.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This product is out of my price range so I would not buy it as an everyday remover.
Comments: These wipes worked well, smelt pleasant and would be ideal to take on holidays.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: This is a little too expensive for what it is.
Comments: I didn’t like them. I found I really had to work hard to take the polish off and I tried with a few different nail polishes. They are handy to have on hand for emergencies but they’re not for everyday use.

Pros: Very handy, convenient packaging.

Cons: Not for everyday use.

Estee Lauder- Lash XL Maximum Length Mascara

July 14, 2007 by admin
Filed under All Reviews, Mascara Reviews

Estee LauderLivia’s Summary: A very good mascara for lengthening the lashes. There is a noticeable improvement in the length. The lashes also remain soft and non brittle. It was very nice to use.

Description: Get extremely long, way-out-there lashes that defy reality. Lash XL extends natural lashes to supernatural lengths–up to 50% longer. Every last lash is separated, defined, lengthened beyond belief. And that’s the truth.

Available: David Jones, Myer, pharmacies

Price: $46.00

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Personally it is more than what I would pay for a mascara.
Comments: It made my lashes look really, really long. I was impressed with how it separated the lashes and made my eyes look very glamorous. However I found that the mascara tended to go a little gluggy after about a week of use.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: This is a really nice mascara, I would definitely buy this for myself.
Comments: I love this mascara; my eyelashes are longer, thicker and really soft after use. No clumping at all, but by the end of the day it’s smudged a bit. I hope Estee Lauder has made Waterproof for this as well, that would be wonderful.

Skin Type: Normal dehydrated skin.
Value for Money: I love it and will definitely use it in the future. It is actually about $10 cheaper than my current brand so it’s great value.
Comments:
The mascara is excellent for a number of reasons. It lasts through my morning gym session then at work and until I get home. I then find it surprisingly easy to remove with my Maybelline remover. It doesn’t smudge or clump on application and the wand is the best I’ve ever used for separating lashes and also for the length of the wand which makes it so easy to apply.

Skin Type: Normal Oily Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I would not pay $46 for this mascara. There are a lot of mascaras out there which cost a lot less and give the same results. Although there is nothing terribly wrong with this mascara I don’t feel that it is worth the money.
Comments: This mascara gives a natural look which would be well suited to daytime wear. There was no clumping, which was good. It did not appear to make my lashes any longer and did not provide much volume.

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Yes I would purchase this mascara again. It’s well worth the money as it is exceptional quality.
Comments: The thing I like the most about this mascara is the way it coats every lash individually, giving a beautifully separated feathery effect. This mascara was applied at 5.30am and still looked good at 9.00pm staying smudge-free, even through heavy exercise. This is a good performance, for a non-waterproof mascara.

Pros: Excellent for lengthening the lashes.

Cons: Doesn’t give much volume.

Johnson’s- 3 in 1 Normal Facial Cleansing Wipes Review

Johnsons WipesLivia’s Summary: It is fantastic to find a product everyone loves. These wipes will do exactly what they claim to do. It is easy to remove your makeup and even your waterproof makeup comes off. The fragrance is pleasant and the feel on the skin is gentle.

Description: Gently cleanse, tone and effectively remove make-up, even waterproof mascara. Gentle enough to use around sensitive eyes.

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry combination, dehydrated skin.
Value for Money: This is definitely good value and would buy again as this is a must to have in your bathroom. Comments: These wipes had a gentle fragrance. The wipes were a good size which enabled you to remove both your eye makeup as well as clean your face. Once clean, it left a residue which rubbed into the skin. It made my face feel very refreshed. These wipes are perfect to use on those late nights you come home and are too tired to run water and get cleanser to remove your makeup. Just a quick wipe over your face and you’re done. Loved them!

Skin Type: Dry Skin.
Value for Money: Yes it is a great price for an excellent product.
Comments: Great product, it took off make up that I thought had already been removed. My skin felt soft and clean after using it. I loved it.

Skin Type: Normal skin.
Value for Money: Excellent value. I will definitely be buying them again.
Comments:
These wipes were very pleasant to use. Not drying at all. It left my skin almost moisturised. It removes all traces of makeup, even my waterproof mascara. My only warning is not to use it before you reapply makeup as it leaves a moist layer on your skin.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This product is good value for money. Although I would not buy these wipes as I did not like the smell.
Comments: The wipes worked well to take off all of my make up. My skin was left feeling clean and ready to be moisturised.

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, I would definitely purchase this product again, it’s great value for money and works very effectively.
Comments: I wear a full coverage make-up and usually waterproof mascara, so I was pleased with how quickly and effectively this product worked. It takes waterproof mascara off easily, but is still gentle around the eye area. My skin felt comfortable and clean after using this product.

Pros: Quick and easy to use, Removes all makeup.

Cons: Fragrance might not be to every ones liking.

Nivea- Age Control Cream Q10 Plus Review

July 14, 2007 by admin

NiveaLivia’s Summary: Very nice hand cream that is worth picking up next time you do you shopping. The small tube makes it ideal to have in you handbag.

Description: Age Control Creme Q10 PLUS is a major innovation in hand care. This unique formulation helps to prevent and visibly reduce the signs of skin ageing while providing intensive moisturising care. Used daily, this quickly absorbed hand cream will protect your skin, leaving hands smoother and more youthful in appearance.

Available: K-Mart, Big W, Priceline

Price: $4.95

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This is excellent value for money. I would buy this product again.
Comments: It smelt good and made my hands soft, it was more of a lotion then a cream in texture but it did absorb quite well.

Skin Type: Dry Skin.
Value for Money: Good value for money, I will buy this again.
Comments: Feels Good, Smells Good. My hands feel great, nice and soft, and this cream also helps prevent cracking.

Skin Type: Normal Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Great value for money!! Yes it will stay in my range of hand creams.
Comments:
Co enzyme Q10 is a fabulous nutrient in supplements and great in a skin cream. It helps to rejuvenate tired over worked hands. The cream goes on smoothly and settles to a good softness. I gave it the ultimate test: I washed my hands shortly after applying it as so often happens in life. I did not have to reapply nor did it feel squidgy until dry. 10 out of 10 for this product. No odour for sensitive noses. No skin irritation. Smooths dry ageing skin also.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: It’s a very cheap hand cream and I will purchase it again for myself when I finish this one.
Comments: I am very happy with it. It did what it promised, quickly absorbed into my skin, leaving my hands softer and smoother with a lovely scent. I can see that it helps fading out some age-spots on my hands too.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Great product for the price.
Comments: This hand cream is good to have in your handbag. It is very moisturizing and leaves the skin very soft. My only observation is that it took a long time to absorb into the skin requiring quite a lot of rubbing.

Pros: Good size for handbag, effective moisturiser.

Cons: Can take a while to absorb.

Bobbi Brown- Creamy Lip Gloss Review

July 14, 2007 by admin

Bobby BrownLivia’s Summary: A very nice lip-gloss but as noted by all of our panelists it is on the expensive side. These days with so many glosses on the market the companies really have to produce something quite special to impress their picky consumers. Having said that this lip-gloss is a full colour gloss that is almost like a liquid lipstick so if you are looking for a more substantial colour with the shine, check this one out.

Description: Gives lips a brilliant, high-shine look. Contains soothing botanical extracts to keep lips supple and soft, including Avocado, Jojoba and Chamomile Oils and Aloe Extracts. Scented with a hint of vanilla bean.

Available: David Jones

Price: $42.00

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry combination.
Value for Money: I wouldn’t purchase this product because I feel it is too expensive for a lip gloss.
Comments: I felt that it did keep my lips soft and smelt lovely. It had a very thick texture, more like a lipstick then glosses that I am used to. Very small bottle for the price.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Very expensive for a lip gloss. Not something I would be willing to part with my money for.
Comments: This lip gloss has a great lollie smell and really shines the lips. But I can get the same look from using a nice lipstick with a clear gloss on top. I really disliked the applicator, it’s similar to a paintbrush, and I felt like I was painting my face. It’s thick and heavy and it transferred onto cups and clothing.

Skin Type: Normal skin.
Value for Money: I think it’s a bit expensive, but this creamy lip gloss is great.
Comments:
I found it’s more like a liquid lipstick; the colour stays on very well. My lips feel soft and moist but not shiny after I applied. I am not a lip gloss fan but this creamy lip gloss will be on my make-up list.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This is a great gloss and even though it is a bit pricey I feel that it is worth it. I would buy and recommend this product.
Comments: This gloss has such a lovely smooth, soft feel to the lips. Very moisturizing too. It stays on well and has a great scent. This will be my new gloss from now on.

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: I would not purchase this product again, because it is not the product that suits my needs.
Comments: The lip-gloss does have full coverage and excellent moisturizing properties. There is also a nice smell to the product. It does stay on well eating small meals, but transfers some, but not all, of the product when kissing. This is normal for a lip-gloss to transfer, but is not as obvious when I use a sheer coverage lip gloss.

Pros: Full colour lip-gloss, keeps lips moist.

Cons: May be too expensive for some.

Stockist Phone Number: 1800 025 607

Price: $27.95 150ml

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry combination.
Value for Money: I would purchase this product again.
Comments: It smelt lovely, like tea tree. It cleaned very well and left my skin feeling soft. It took off my make up well.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Good price for a good product that will be added to my routine.
Comments: This is a great all in one. It works wonders at removing make-up without being harsh or need scrubbing. Leaves my face soft, smooth and very clean. Making my life simple, one great product that’s easy, fast and works.

Skin Type: Normal skin.
Value for Money: Very well priced for the size of the product. I will get it again for sure.
Comments:
This cleanser worked very well taking my makeup off. I even felt the toner in the product. My skin felt very clean and I noticed a visible reduction in the size of my pores.

Skin Type: Normal Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: At $27.95 this product is good value for 150ml. It is quite economical. I would buy this product again. Comments: The gel is a pleasure to use, though the spheres must be really tiny as they were not noticeable to the fingers. Just a small amount was needed to cleanse the whole face. It rinsed off cleanly- not having to use a washer for any residue. My face feels fresh and clean(it took off all makeup even eye makeup). My face does not feel strained or dry but refreshed. It has no odour and did not cause any sensitivity.

Skin Type: Dry combination, dehydrated skin.
Value for Money: Yes, I think this is very good value for money. If you added up the products you used to remove makeup, it would cost the same or even more than this one. This product is just so convenient to use.
Comments: I really liked this product as it removed my eye makeup and foundation etc, in an instant while in the shower. The fact that you can clean your entire face with one product is a bonus. I loved the gentle fragrance and the jelly-like substance felt nice and cool when applied to the eye area. My face felt totally clean and soft after rinsing off.

Pros: One product does it all.

Cons: None.

Clinique- Clarifying Moisture Lotion Review

July 13, 2007 by admin

Clinique LotionLivia’s Summary: Fantastic to see an excellent product improved with this new, moisturising edition to the clarifying range. I have long been a fan of the clarifying lotion as you can never achieve the same results with manual exfoliators. The gentle exfoliation through the chemical process twice a day, not only gives you a smoother healthier complexion but helps the moisturiser penetrate the skin and keeps the makeup on longer and smoother too.

Description: Exfoliates the surface of skin just enough so that it clears away dead surface cells without interfering with skin’s ability to retain moisture. It provides this gentle, gradual exfoliation with the added benefit of water-based emulsion-immediately replenishing lost moisture.

Available:David Jones, Myer, pharmacies and Clinique Centres.

Price: $33.00

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: Good value for money, and I would buy it for myself.
Comments: This Clarifying Moisture Lotion is very gentle for my normal-combination skin. It’s suitable for sensitive skin as well I think. My face feels clean and fresh. It’s a lovely lotion.

Skin Type: Slightly dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: This is a comparable price for this type of product. The 200ml size makes it good value. Yes I would buy it again.
Comments: It felt nice on my face after cleansing. It has no odour at all which is great for sensitive noses, and no skin irritation. My skin feels smooth refreshed & firmed but not tight. I don’t feel the need to add extra moisturiser as it also feels nourished but I will, to complete the beauty routine. An extra point: It did not hurt when I got it on broken skin. (I cut my finger).

Skin Type: Normal Oily Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Good value for money, large 200ml bottle for $33.00. I like this product and would purchase it again.
Comments:
I don’t normally use toners as they tend to dry my skin but this one didn’t. I like the fact that is offers gentle exfoliation which is good for sensitive skins that don’t react well to scrubs. Upon application skin felt fresh, clean and soft. It removed all residual makeup on my face after cleansing. I did notice that after using this product for a week, my skin looked brighter and had more of a glow. I used this product in conjunction with Clinique cleansing soap and Dramatically different moisturiser which I received in a “Gift With Purchase” from Clinique.

Skin Type: Normal Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Good value for money, I will be buying this product again.
Comments: The Clinique clarifying moisture lotion is wonderful for me. I have actually used the original Clarifying Lotion for many years but not the moisturising one which I intended to switch to when mine runs out as it’s gentler on my sensitive skin. It definitely moisturises my dehydrated skin & helps my foundation to sit better.

Skin Type:Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This product was great value of money. It cleans and exfoliates at the same time. I would purchase this product to use again.
Comments: What a great idea to gently exfoliate each day. This moisture lotion left my face glowing and also had a great smell.

Pros: Gentle exfoliation, suitable for sensitive skins.

Cons: Because it is moisturising, it’s not suitable for very oily skins.

Livia’s Chat with Tali Shine

July 13, 2007 by admin

Livia: So, how did you get started in the beauty industry?

Tali: My background is in journalism and I was lucky enough to be working as a beauty editor which gave me a great introduction into the industry and an opportunity to test literally hundreds of products.

Livia: Tali, what inspired you to create your own cosmetics range?

Tali: The ideas for creating my own range came from seeing a gap in the market and wanting to fill it with gorgeous and glamorous products, which are still affordable and that are hand-bag essentials.

Livia: Where do you draw your inspiration for your cosmetics?

Tali: My main inspiration comes from my travels as well as from speaking to girls I meet as well as my girlfriends and seeing what they like, what they are using and what they want.

Livia: What is one product you can’t live without and why?

Tali: My lip gloss- it smells great, moisturises the lips and looks gorgeous on. The little shoe charm attached to the tube is also very cute.

Livia: What luxuries do you treat yourself to?

Tali: I try and make time each day to some exercise- sometimes a walk, yoga, pilates or rollerblading along the beach in summer. Its a great way to take care of yourself and clear the mind at the same time. I also try to go for regular massages and if I have a special event on I love getting a spray tan because I am naturally very pale.

Livia: What is your beauty routine for everyday and for special occasions?

Tali: For everyday I wear tinted moisturiser, lipgloss, mascara and my cream blush from the compacts. If I have a special occasion I love playing with different colours on the eyes and creating a smoky eye look- a couple of false lashes in the corners of the eyes heightens the glamour and if it is a night time event then I swap the tinted moisturiser for foundation and concealer.

Livia: What is one piece of beauty advice you would give our readers?

Tali: Be happy and confident in your own skin because that really shows through. Also take care of your skin and wear sunscreen!

Livia: Has your Mum ever given you beauty advice and what was it?

Tali: My mum told me never to go to bed without washing off my makeup and drummed into me from an early age that its important to protect our skin and always wear sunscreen. Mum is always telling me to try not to get stressed as when you do it shows on your skin.

Livia: Do you have a home remedy you swear by and if so, what is it?

Tali: Put a little conditioner and water in a spray bottle and spritz onto the ends of your hair in summer to act as a leave in treatment.

Livia: Living and traveling all around the world, did you notice anything that Australian women can learn and apply from other parts of the globe?

Tali: I love the fact that Australian women like to look nice without taking themselves too seriously. New Yorkers are really well groomed and I love the fact that they have inexpensive nail bars on virtually every street corner so there is no excuse not to have regular file and polishes. One thing that European women do well is to eat great food that may have plenty of nutrients and good fats in them, which help them to stay looking younger for longer.

Fendi- Theorema Perfume Review

FendiLivia’s Summary: This perfume is definitely different. However it is a welcome change from a lot of modern light fragrances. I would describe this as a winter perfume that is spicy, reminding one of a warm kitchen full of delicious baking smells. I found this perfume warms to the skin beautifully. In the cold winter months it is nice to have something so warming.

Description: Soft oriental, tangelos, cinnamon, amber, pepper and jasmine petals.

Available:
Myer and online. (Theorema is a hard to find fragrance but it’s a fave!)

Skin Type:
Combination
Skin.

Comments: I really like the smell, it’s not a beautiful smell, it’s spicy. It’s something different, getting away from the traditional bunch of flowers. Like most perfumes it’s strong and heavy at first but cools to a spicy cinnamon scent.

Skin Type: Dry Skin.

Comments: I like this perfume very much, it’s great for those who don’t want to leave the house smelling like potpourri. I will be looking out for it in the future.

Skin Type: Normal Skin

Comments: This is very different to what I normally gravitate to. However after wearing it for a while it does settle on my skin very well and I actually find it very pleasant. This perfume is a lot heavier than what I’m used to and it is definitely for wintertime too. Not sure if I would buy it again. But it was very nice to try.

Skin Type: Normal Dry Combination Skin

Comments: I don’t mind the fragrance, but I feel it’s a strong spicy smell and is a little too masculine for my liking.

Skin Type: Combination Skin

Comments: I didn’t like this perfume, I much prefer light floral fragrances.
I found this to be heavy and masculine. It smells like a box of cooking spices.

Who of us can say that we have no pressures in life? In our hectic society it is not uncommon to feel stress, anxiety, headaches, mental fatigue and insomnia. In fact these symptoms are so common that many of us just learn to live with them, hoping that if we ignore them long enough, one day they will just disappear. Not so.

Research shows that not only will they not disappear but they can lead to much more serious problems including ulcers, heart attacks and clinical depression. So it would make sense to devote a little time regularly to de-stress.

Granted, not all of us have the time or the budget to regularly indulge in the “Day Spa” experience, but we all have a few minutes a day and a few dollars to invest in a basic aromatherapy oil kit.

Aromatherapy oils have been shown to have calming, relaxing, uplifting and restorative effects on the body. There are a few ways you can use them depending on your moods. You can mix a few drops of oil in an oil burner or mix five drops of three different oils in a tablespoon of carrier oil and put it in your bathwater or five drops of three oils in two tablespoons of carrier oil to massage into you body.

How do you choose the oils to use? Well there are a few basic rules but mainly, go with what you like.

Generally the smells you are attracted to are the ones good for you. (I haven’t found chocolate essential oils yet. Sorry girls) Generally the softer the smell of the oil, the more relaxing it is. The sharper the smell the more invigorating it is. So to help you relax you would choose soft, earthy herbal oils.

Some of these are: Geranium, lavender, neroli, sandalwood, chamomile, rose, patchouli, jasmine, rosewood, cedarwood and ylang-ylang.

Some of the uplifting oils are: basil, bergamot, cypress, rosemary, sage, lemongrass, orange, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit, peppermint and spearmint.

I have collected a few of my favourite recipes for you to try. But feel free to experiment and create your own favourites. There are no wrong formulations.

For headaches:
3 drops lavender
3 drops geranium
3 drops sandalwood

For insomnia:
3 drops chamomile
3 drops cedarwood
3 drops ylang-ylang

For mental fatigue:
3 drops basil
3 drops neroli
3 drops sandalwood

John Gerard wrote: “The smell of basil is good for the heart and for the head, that the seede cureth the infirmities of the heart, taketh away sorrowfulness which cometh of melancholy, and maketh a man merry and glad.”

For peace of mind:
3 drops jasmine
3 drops orange
3 drops sandalwood

For happiness:
3 drops ylang-ylang
3 drops clary sage
2 drops lemon
1 drop lavender

For warmth:
3 drops lavender
3 drops orange
3 drops cinnamon

For enthusiasm:
3 drops lemon
3 drops grapefruit
3 drops mandarin
3 drops ylang-ylang

For renewed energy:
3 drops jasmine
3 drops lemon
3 drops bergamot

For sweet thoughts:
3 drops grapefruit
2 drops sandalwood
2 drops jasmine
2 drops cinnamon

For inspiration:
3 drop bergamot
3 drops sandalwood
2 drops grapefruit
1 drop jasmine

Have a great time experimenting. Just one drop can make a difference in the smell of the oil blend, so go ahead and create your own signature scent.

Mineral Makeup – The New Buzz in Cosmetics

by Livia Mercer

Firstly, what is mineral makeup?

Mineral makeup is just as the name suggests made from minerals. These are naturally occurring minerals and inorganic pigments from the earth (Metal ores and iron oxides) that are very finely crushed and milled. They contain no oils, no preservatives, no fragrance, no talc and are safe for even very sensitive skins.

In fact, they are so safe that a lot of Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists are recommending them to their patients. Not only is Mineral makeup not harmful for the skin, it is actually good for it. The ingredients are so finely milled that they will not clog your pores and because it is made from inorganic minerals it will not gather moisture to feed bacteria therefore it is totally pure. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, helping to calm and soothe irritated skin.

What are the ingredients in Mineral Makeup?

TITANIUM DIOXIDE.
This is a naturally occurring white mineral that is a fantastic sunscreen. It is the second most highly reflective mineral. (the first is DIAMOND) Therefore it not only acts a physical sunscreen but also helps minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
ZINC OXIDE
This is again a natural sunscreen giving you a broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. But more than that it is also used for its wide range of colours. This mineral allows foundations to be different shades, and is also used in Eye shadows and Blushes.
IRON OXIDE
This is a very opaque pigment again used for colouring cosmetics.

KAOLIN CLAY
Used for it’s oil absorbing qualities.

DIMETHICONE
Made from silica that is a combination of minerals but largely comprised of quartz. Dimethicone aids spreading, is transfer resistant and imparts a remarkable smoothness and creaminess to the overall product. It also improves coverage without adding heaviness. It is non-comedogenic and highly water repellent.
MICA
Is found in nature in a variety of colours and can be used to add shine and sparkle to cosmetics.

How does is differ from regular makeup?

Mineral Makeup is generally applied with a brush or sponge in a downward motion on a clean, moisturised skin. If you have very dry skin, the foundation at first can appear a little powdery but all you have to do is gently mist your face with water and all powderiness vanishes. For oily skins the foundation contains natural oil absorbing ingredients, therefore you will find the foundation nice and matte all through the day.

Regardless of your skin type, the foundation will give you a very natural, fresh appearance all day long. The makeup is also water resistant, meaning it will not run or smudge in humid weather or throughout your workout or if you get caught in the rain. All you have to do is pat the water or perspiration off your face, instead of rubbing it off.

Having said that, the makeup is not difficult to remove. Not containing any waxes or oils all you have to do is use your regular, favourite makeup remover. Over all, Mineral Makeup is worth buzzing about.

It is truly a major breakthrough in cosmetic skin care.

Once you have tried and perfected the use of Mineral Makeup you will not want to go back to your old foundations. There are several great companies that specialise in Mineral Makeup. Check them out for yourself.

What You Need to Ask Before Selecting a Cosmetic Surgeon

July 11, 2007 by admin

WHO WILL BE PERFORMING THE TREATMENT?.

The qualifications of the person performing the procedure should most definitely be questioned. Don’t be afraid to ask what that person’s qualifications are. Will the doctor be performing the procedure or will it be another member of their staff such as a nurse or technician? Also make sure that the person performing your cosmetic treatment performs these procedures regularly, for example some clinics will only perform cosmetic procedures one day a week or once per month. Practical procedures need to be performed frequently to maintain skill and competency levels.

WHO WILL BE CONDUCTING THE CONSULTATION?

The consultation should be an in-depth look at your concerns and analysis of your skin to determine what is the best treatment for you. The person performing the consult needs detailed knowledge in facial anatomy and skin structure to give you advice on the best treatment options available to you. The individual performing the initial consult should fully explain the treatment to be performed including potential side-effects and the total cost involved.

Often a series of treatments may be required to achieve a specific result, so it is important that overall cost rather than initial cost is explained at the consultation. Make sure that the same person performing your consult is also going to be performing your treatment and subsequent treatments. Together you have both reached an understanding of your concerns and the best treatment options available to you, and it should be this person who continues your treatment.

ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH THE PRACTITIONER?

You must insure that you feel comfortable with the person that is performing the treatment. Can she/he relate to your concerns? Has he/she given you a full understanding of what is to be performed? You should not be talked into any procedure that you are uncomfortable or uncertain about.

ARE YOU GETTING VALUE FOR YOUR MONEY?

Many people phone around to find the best price for specific treatments. It is very difficult to compare prices between clinics as different clinics will use different quantities or doses of product. To compare prices accurately you need to ask about the quantity that is being referred to.

For example, ask the number of units being used or the volume of the syringe being used. If you are receiving less than the recommended number of units for anti-wrinkle treatment then it is less likely to give you the long lasting effect you desire. Remember that the money you are spending is not just for the product, it is also for the service. The skill of the practitioner plays a great role in your treatment result, often more so than the product itself. Again, this comes back to making sure you know the qualifications of the person performing your treatment.

IS THERE A GUARANTEE ON TREATMENT?

Unfortunately cosmetic treatments don’t come with any specific guarantees as there can be a variation in response between individuals. An experienced practitioner should be able to accurately judge the amount of filler and or anti wrinkle product to ensure you achieve the best result. If however, the treatment is unreasonably short-lived or inadequate then it is important to return to the practitioner who performed the treatment to discuss correction of the problem.

DO YOU HAVE A CHOICE OF TREATMENTS?

Ask what type of treatments and products the clinic has available? During the initial consult it may be determined that the best course of action for your individual needs and concerns is not what you had originally thought. For instance there are several different brands of dermal fillers and each has its pros and cons dependent upon your individual case. Make sure you can be offered a choice of products, so that you can receive the treatment that best suits you as an individual. As you can see, a few pertinent questions will assist you in selecting the cosmetic clinic that will provide you with the best service to suit your individual needs.

The best way to find out exactly which treatment will suit you is to visit Dr Kylie Regli for an obligation-free consultation.

Luscious Lips – 4 Steps to Maintaining Glamourous Lips throughout the Year

July 11, 2007 by admin

by Livia Mercer

The onset of winter generally means dryer skin and this is noticed most on your lips. Not only do lips have the thinnest skin on them but they have almost no sebaceous (oil) glands and absolutely no sweat glands. Add to this the fact that lips lose 3-10 times more moisture than the other parts of the face, so no wonder we have dry lips. What do most of us instinctively do when we have dry lips? Yes, we lick them. Making the problem worse, because the saliva actually eats away that precious thin skin layer we have on our lips, therefore making the lips drier, even to the point of cracking and bleeding. Avoid getting to this state at all costs.

How? Follow these few simple steps to keep your lips luscious throughout the year!

Always, always keep your lips hydrated! Even at night. Get into the habit of applying lip cream or lip balm as part of your skincare routine. Personally I choose not to use a lip balm with an SPF at night as you don’t need it but I prefer ones with vitamin A or E in them to nourish the lips. You will find that smooth, moist lips will hold lip gloss or lipstick the best.

Create the right foundation! To make sure your lips always look their best without any bleeding of the colour or simply disappeared lipstick, you need a little preparation. This works well both for lipsticks and lip glosses.
1: Apply foundation all over your lips.
2: With lip liner, colour in the whole lip area, not just the outline.
3: It is always best to stick to your natural lip line initially. Once your natural shape is established you can, very carefully even out the lips or extend the outline. Be Cautious when doing this as there is nothing worse than seeing an unnatural lip line.

Colour in the masterpiece!
1: Apply your colour starting at the centre of your lips and thinning the colour out towards the corners of your mouth.
2: So you don’t end up wearing your lipstick on your teeth, place your index finger in your mouth, close your lips around it and pull it out. This is a fantastic way to remove any excess colour. Make sure you wipe your finger; otherwise you will end up with the colour on your clothes.

Budge proof your lipstick! Personally I’m not a big fan of long last lipsticks as these generally are drier formulations and make my lips uncomfortably dry especially in winter. So to budge proof your lipstick, follow these steps.
1: After applying your colour, blot with a tissue.
2: Lightly powder your lips with a brush or a puff.
3: Reapply colour.

Following these steps will ensure you never again will experience dry, cracked, chapped lips. What’s more your lips will look glamorous no matter what the occasion!

Comments: This is a beautiful fragrance that will last on your skin all day without changing. It is definitely a winter fragrance and it is a little heavy for me. I generally like lighter floral scents. Having said that this is not unpleasant to wear.

Skin Type: Extremely sensitive, dry skin

Comments: I liked the fact that this perfume was not sweet. It’s actually quite different to what I normally wear, but it’s a very nice change. Lasts well too.

Clarins- Lip Colour Tint Review

Clarins Lip Colour TintLivia’s Summary: This lip tint got mixed reviews. Some loved the texture some didn’t so it just goes to show, you have to try it for yourself. I regularly wear lipstick so I liked the texture of the product, found it to be nice and moist on the lips. It wears well on the lips and I found the colour to be true. The colour selection in the range is quite good.

Description: Here’s a Clarins lipstick that looks as good as it feels as it performs. Chic red and white-gold casing, nine winning shades of super-soft creamy lip tint with just a hint of light-catching sparkle and a deeply-conditioning formula that delivers lasting colour.

Available:Myer, David Jones and leading pharmacies

Price: $36.00

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Not really.
Comments: This product was nice – it is creamy, went on well, nice-ish shades etc – but didn’t have any staying power at all. I have no problem spending this much and more on lip products as long as they perform. Personally, this product isn’t for me.

Skin Type: Slightly dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: This product is good value as you have variety at your fingertips. I would buy it especially for a trip to have a variety ready on hand for any outfit.
Comments: It has a great range of colours for any outfit. I found the product to be easy to apply, comfortable to wear and durable although some reapplication after eating was necessary.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: I might buy it as I need to wear something comfortable on my lips during wintertime.
Comments:
The shades are very wearable; it does glide on soft and creamy, and feels comfortable on the lips. It also has this fruity aroma, but I just wished the colour could stay on for longer.

Skin Type: Combination Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: I hardly use lipstick, so I wouldn’t buy it. However, I think it’s worth the money as a little goes a long way.
Comments: The name is misleading: it’s more like a lipstick than lip tint. It’s so pigmented; a little dab of it gives you lots of colour. It smells really nice and fruity, not overwhelming, none of that synthetic smell either. Texture is soft and creamy, and gives a great shine.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I would not purchase this product.
Comments: This Clarins lipstick felt like an interesting cross between lip gloss and lipstick. The formula was thin and silky to apply, adding colour with an initial shine. I found that the shine faded quickly and left a matte, stained look on my lips. My lips felt tight and somewhat dry, a strange sensation from someone used to wearing moisturising lip balm or gloss! Every time I thought it had surely faded I checked my lips and found the colour was still visible. However I wasn’t extremely impressed with this product. I didn’t mind the stained look, in fact I prefer it to a thick lipstick look, but I just couldn’t get used to the uncomfortable dry feeling. I was pleased with the above average lasting power, the colours are beautiful, and the natural effect is appealing, but it was too drying to my lips.

Pros: Good colour range, nice fragrance.

Cons: Sheer colour can wear off lips fast.

Livia Chats with Bessie Bardot about Life, Beauty, Self Image and Staying on Top of it All

July 11, 2007 by admin

Livia: Ok Bessie, thanks for taking the time to talk to The Beauty Review. You’re the successful author of a couple of best selling books, ‘Bessie’s Body Secrets’ and Casting Couch Confidential. You are also a busy media personality and a businesswoman. Most women these days like you are extremely busy. How do you find or make the time to look after yourself?

Bessie: For about a year I let my life take over my diary and I was the last on my list, in the end I got a lot done but I felt so low in myself. Now I realise that I need to make time for these things, so I multi task, I do my own pedicures when I’m watching the news and when I go to the hair dresser once a month I have a nail artist working on me while my hair is being done.

For exercise I walk instead of drive to the bank, movies, lunch with a friend. Ignoring your needs as a woman just makes you grumpier, and I can tell you that if we allow ourselves to be last on our to-do list, everyone else will put us last on theirs.

Livia: Bessie, in your opinion how does diet and lifestyle affect a woman’s outer beauty?

Bessie: When I was researching my last book Bessie’s Body Secrets I realised how important diet and lifestyle is. We really are what we eat. And our exercise or lack there of makes a huge difference in our appearance. Like did you know that eating wheat and gluten (a protein found in wheat, oats, rye, barley, spelt and triticale) actually causes a rise in free radicals which are responsible for early aging? So my personal advice is to cut out the wheat and gluten and check what vitamins and nutrients each meal is giving you. I’d rather eat well and exercise now rather than booking in for botox and an early facelift.

Livia: Being in the modelling industry and experiencing firsthand that beauty is only skin deep, what lessons have you learnt that you can pass onto our readers?

Bessie: I’ve learnt that a spray tan is my best friend, it makes everything look better. I’ve also learnt that your makeup base is all important, stick to a light-ish colour and warm it up with bronzer or blush.

Livia: How much time do you spend on your daily beauty routine?

Bessie: Honestly, about five minutes. I cleanse in the shower with Dermalogica and then moisturise straight after I dry off with Cetaphil. When I have to go to events I typically spend ten minutes doing my makeup… short hair makes all this possible.

Livia: Has your Mum ever given you beauty advice and what was it?

Bessie: My Mum suffered with acne which she unfortunately passed down to me, so my early teenage years were full of dermatologist’s appointments. She did teach me that a good eye brow shape can really open up your face.

Livia: Do you have a home remedy you swear by and if so, what is it?

Bessie: If you’re eye brows need some taming and you don’t have any eyebrow gel, egg whites work well.

Livia: What is the one product you cannot live without and why?

Bessie: Mac Iridescent pressed powder. With or without base, I run some of this powder along the bridge of my nose and on my temples and it gives my face a healthy glow.

Livia: Bessie, many women I talk to tend to feel insecure about their looks and their body. How do you encourage women to build a positive self image?

Bessie: I struggled with this myself till recently, but I realised that the body we’ve got, the legs that support you, the butt you’re sitting on-it’s yours whether you like it or not; it’s not negotiable. So its time to stop fighting who you are. Remind yourself of each parts actual purpose, and of other people who might be missing that part and would love to swap with you, makes it a little easier to navigate. The other tip is to stop your inner bitch. Every time your inner voice bitches about you or a stranger in the street you are reinforcing that negative self image. Life is too short, this isn’t high school, be your own biggest fan and others will be forced to agree.

Livia: I know that you are passionate about empowering women to be their best. So, what advice would you give women who want to turn their life around and make a new start whether it would be in their career, relationships or otherwise?

Bessie: The single most important piece of advice I can give is to do what you love or love what you do. Discover what you’re passionate about and create a career around that, or apply yourself more in the job you’re in but just make sure you have a plan. Life should be as enjoyable as retirement – right now. My next book Bessie’s Guide for girls who want more from life: Mind, Body, Style gives practical steps to redesigning your life.

Scent-sual Shopping – Your Guide to Choosing the Right Fragrance

July 11, 2007 by admin

by Livia Mercer

So often I hear women complain that they don’t really know what perfume they like, or they are afraid to buy something new, so they just stick with the perfume they got introduced to decades ago. True these days we are bombarded with new perfume launches every time we go to the shops. There are literally thousands of different fragrances.

How do you pick which is right for you? Perfume is a very personal choice. What suits one person may not suit another. Not only do fragrances need to reflect the personality of the wearer but they smell different on everyone as they mix with your natural oils and acids on your skin. Perfumes are generally categorised in eight different areas, so once you know what category you like best you can narrow your search down.

Floral
By far the largest and most popular category. An accord of different floral notes including Rose, Carnation, Jasmine, Gardenia and Orange Blossom. It easily combines with any other family, flowery perfumes are universally loved. This also includes the single flower compositions such as rose, jasmine, tuberose, lily of the valley or ylang ylang. Think Christian Dior J’adore, Gucci Eau De ParfumII and Britney Spears Curious.

Flowery Aldehydic
These fragrances are often described as a little powdery. These are quite soft although the aldehydes add sparkle to flowery notes. Think Chanel No5, Carolina Herrera 212 and Bvlgary Omnia Cristalline.

Citrus
This fragrance group is light, tangy, refreshing and uplifting. The light, fresh characters of the citrus notes (lime, tangerine, bergamot, orange, lemon, petitgrain, mandarin, etc.)are often combined with more sweeter scents (flowers, fruits and chypre).Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune, Clarins Eau Tranquility and Donna Karan Be Delicious.

Oriental
The green fragrances are fresh with a hint of sharpness often reminding one of the freshly cut grass, pine and herbs. It is almost an outdoors or sporty fragrance. Green notes are natural in character; often married with fruity and floral notes. Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca and Christian Dior Tendre Poison

Soft-Oriental
Soft-orientals combine oriental notes with various florals. Top notes are often fresh. Britney Spears In Control, Clinique Simply.

Chypre(Woody)
Based on a woody, mossy and flowery complex, containing Cedar, Patchouly, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Pine and sometimes with aspects of fruits, chypre perfumes are rich and tenacious. Guerlain Samsara, Narciso Rodriguez For Her and Donna Karan Cashmere Mist.

Watery
These are aqua or marine notes reminding one of the ocean or the smell after a big downpour, sea breezes and cool, fresh dew. Think L’Eau d’Issey by Issey Miyake, Bvlgary BLV Notte.

Once you have decided on the perfume you like you have a further choice. What strength you want your perfume to be.

Here are your choices:

PERFUME - The strongest, longest-lasting fragrance form. Apply at all the pulse points; wherever you feel the beat of the heart, behind your ears, the nape of your neck, at the base of your throat, at the bosom, the inside bend of your elbows, at the inside of your wrists and behind your knees. The heat of the body at these points will assure a well-balanced fragrance application. It usually comes in a dab on bottle. This form will last on the skin for 8-12 hours.

EAU DE PARFUM - One of the most common forms of fragrances to be found in many of the fine fragrance collections. It should be smoothed or sprayed just before dressing. This usually is a spray bottle and it lasts on the skin 6 – 8 hours.

EAU DE TOILET - Usually less concentrated than Eau de Parfum, it should be applied in exactly the same way as Eau de Parfum. Always in a spray bottle and will last on the skin 4 – 6 hours.

COLOGNE- The lightest form of fragrance. Perfect for splashing liberally all over the body. It is the perfect refreshant. It does not last very long on the skin.

Once you have familiarized yourself with the different choices available to you it’s time to hit the fragrance counter. But go slowly. Our noses only recognize up to three smells only. So don’t go dousing yourself in twenty different perfumes. Once you have tried on three different smells on your skin walk away.

Leave the perfume area as the air is full of smells here. Leave the perfume on your skin for ten minutes before smelling it again. This way you should have a sense of the true fragrance. If you still like it you’re on to a winner.

Note: Never rub your wrists together after spraying your perfume. This bruises the fragrance notes and you will not get the true perfume.

Happy Perfume shopping!

Bloom Lip GlossLivia’s Summary: Overall this lip gloss was well liked by all our panellists. I loved the great smell of the gloss and this was remarked by everyone as well. A very nice product that is worth trying out next time you are shopping for new glosses.

Description: The product that Bloom is famous for. High shine gloss for an extra glam look.

Available:
Myer, David Jones, Visit the Bloom Website for More.

Price: 8ml $20.00

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: I will definitely buy this lip gloss again. Loved this product.
Comments: I loved this product from the moment I first put it on. Beautiful gloss with no sticky icky feel. The very next day I bought another one to keep at work as well as the cutest keychain/gloss to have with me all the time. That’s how much I liked it! It’s got a beautiful scent too. A winner all round. By far my most used/favourite product.

Skin Type: Combination Oily Skin.
Value for Money: I think that this gloss is definitely value for money, cheap compared to similar glosses by different companies. Also a good size product for the price. I would definitely buy this for myself – and may just have to inspect some other colours!
Comments: I really liked this lip-gloss. The texture was much like most lip glosses, only a little sticky, which is nice, yet soft on the lips and not drying. The colour was strong for a gloss, which was nice as they can often be too sheer, but its staying power was about average for a gloss – this doesn’t deter me as I expect to reapply gloss, and it is not marketed as a long lasting product. Smell wise – it has a familiar smell – but I can’t pick what it is!!! Not unpleasant. The colour, Cutie Pie, is gorgeous. This one is already living in my handbag.

Skin Type: Normal Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: A cute present to buy for someone but personally I consider it a bit too pricey.
Comments:
Loved the texture of this gloss as it was not too sticky but just a little sticky so that it would stay on your lips for a while. Has a yummy smell and the colour is lasting and bright making your lips look shiny.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: I will buy it again, Bloom products are always affordable.
Comments: I’ve always loved Bloom’s lip-glosses but never tried the clear ones. It is wonderful if you are after a hint of colour as it does enhance the natural hue of your lips. I could smell some vanilla and cinnamon in it and surprisingly it stays on pretty well! The only drawback is the lips get a little dry when removing the gloss..

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: This product is quite expensive for a small lip gloss but it has a very beautiful and young colour. I don’t really feel this is value for money and I probably wouldn’t buy it again.
Comments: This product had a very smooth texture making my lips shine and it wasn’t too sticky. It had a delicious, sweet smell. It stayed on for a while, but I found that I had to keep re-applying it quite a few times throughout the day. The colour of this lip gloss was what I liked most (Tangerine) and that is what impressed me about it the most.

Pros: Beautiful smell, great colours.

Cons: Needs reapplication frequently.

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Slightly Dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: This is a quality eye shadow I won’t regret having. I will be looking for more in the range.
Comments: I loved the individual brushes for contouring and shading. I quickly mastered the techniques and soon had the best eye shadow makeup I have ever been able to apply by myself. It did not smudge and was still in place at the end of a long day. It did not irritate my eyes in any way.

Skin Type: Combination Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Great value for 4 lovely eye shadows that perform well and are lovely colours. I will most probably be buying some more of these.
Comments: I really think these are great value eye shadows, as they have a beautiful soft texture, which allows them to blend easily, but at the same time they stay put all day and only fade very slightly. They do not feel chalky on the lids, which is great. Only suffered a small amount of “fallout” onto my cheeks, but this is due to the soft, blendable texture of the shadows, so I can handle it!

The product has no apparent smell. I liked the colours [sandstorm], although do not think they were the best for my complexion – so I will explore a different coloured quad. The colours were good for creating depth, but probably only 3 needs to be used at a time. The darkest colour worked lovely applied wet as an eyeliner.

Skin Type: Normal Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: This is worth the money. I would definitely try the other colours in the range!
Comments:
It has a beautiful rich velvety look. Did not irritate my eyes at all! And it really does stay on for 12 hours or more. Loved the fact it did not crease, fade or smudge. I was able to make many different looks with the different colour layerings.

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Yes. I would definitely but it again.
Comments: This product was surprising. When I opened it I thought the beige shades looked really washed out. They are deceptive. It turned out to be fantastic highlighting colour that blended so easily. It stayed in place, but then again I haven’t ever really had problems with eye shadow moving. I would recommend it.

Skin Type: Combination Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, it’s definitely value for money, and I’d buy it again! Without a doubt.
Comments: Powder is fine and pigmented. The colour goes on smoothly, even with the given applicators. They’re shimmery, but yet not over the top, making them suitable for both day & night use. They wear well, but they still smudge a little on my oily lids.

Pros: Good staying power, smooth application, good colours.

Cons: None.

Innoxa Hand CreamLivia’s Summary: A very nice product that was well received by all our panellists. The smell is also very pleasant. It is a good hand cream for everyday use.

Description: Comforting Hand Cream A light yet creamy texture makes this an easily absorbed, moisturising and softening hand treatment.

Available:Myer, David Jones. Leading pharmacies
Stockist Phone Number: 1800 025 607

Price: $9.90 (150ml)

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: It is very good value and I would definitely buy it.
Comments: As a lighter hand moisturiser it worked well, not leaving them too greasy. I find it didn’t last too long and needed to be reapplied quite often. It does make your skin feel silky when it is newly applied. The packaging says calm and Soothe your mind… well the smell certainly did that, I could smell it all day and not get sick of it. Overall a very nice product.

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I will be buying this product. I think it is not too expensive.
Comments: I loved the smell, it absorbed well into the hands and wasn’t greasy. The hands felt soft for quite a while.

Skin Type: Normal Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: This is defiantly worth the price as it lasts for ages. I would purchase this for next time.
Comments:
I found the beautiful smell of the lavender & other scents to be very calming as you are rubbing it into your hands. The best part is that it is very fast absorbing, so you can get back to what you were doing. I was very surprised with the great results. I like to use it during the day and before bed, keeps your hands looking and feeling silky all day.

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, this is so cheap for such a beautiful hand cream.
Comments: The smell of lavender is so soothing as you rub this cream in your hands at bedtime. It didn’t leave my hands greasy, but well moistened and soft. I liked this hand cream very much. It would make a beautiful present to give someone.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: Yes this was pretty good value for money and I will probably buy it again.
Comments: This hand cream was so beautiful. After using it my hands felt very soft and smelled delicious, as I love lavender. The only sad thing was that the smell didn’t last very long. The texture was very smooth and relaxing. It absorbed quite fast into the skin, which is good. Overall I really loved this product.

Pros: Nice fragrance, smooth even texture.

Cons: Not for very dry hands.

Revlon – Lash Fantasy Waterproof Mascara

July 9, 2007 by admin
Filed under All Reviews, Mascara Reviews

Revlon Lash FantasyLivia’s Summary: Wow, what mixed reviews. Some loved it, some not so much. Personally I’m not a big fan of waterproof mascaras preferring to take my makeup off in one go. This mascara was actually nice to use. The Primer did make a difference to the length of the lashes but I also experienced some flaking of the colour by the middle of the day.

Description: When ordinary lashes just won’t do, get 5X the impact with Lash Fantasy Primer & Mascara. Build the lashes you’ve dreamed of in 2 quick steps:
Step 1: Vitamin-enriched Primer nourishes bare lashes as it lifts and adds length.
Step 2: Mascara intensifies lashes with thickening colour that gives dramatic fullness and precise separation. The result: Longer, thicker, ravishing lashes with 5X THE IMPACT. Triple the lift. Double the thickness. Where ordinary lashes end, fantasy begins.

Available:
Myer, David Jones, Target, K-Mart, Big W.

Price: $21.95

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Slightly Dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: This mascara is comparable in price with other mascara’s but gives so much more. I will definitely be re-purchasing this item.
Comments: The two-step system is new and gives so much definition to your eyelashes. It does not glug up the lashes or make them feel heavy. A must have in the beauty routine for either day or night. This product performed all day and well into the night without re-application. A must for any busy girl like myself.

Skin Type: Combination Oily Skin.
Value for Money: I think that there are better quality mascaras out there for this price or less. I would not buy this product for myself.
Comments: I liked the idea of this mascara, but was disappointed with the results. Firstly I applied the primer, which is white and seemed to clump a bit to my lashes. I did notice it stick to the ends of my lashes, lengthening them. I then applied the black mascara, which went on nicely and removed some of the clumping from the primer. Lashes did seem longer, but not thicker.

It did not leave my lashes very soft, which I think may be a result of the two layers of product. I also found that by the end of the day it had smudged, which I was hoping wouldn’t happen as it is supposed to be waterproof. It removed very easily with only water and cream cleanser, which was good, but makes me question its waterproof qualities. I preferred the black mascara applied on its own, and therefore wouldn’t buy, as the two steps offer no better result than regular one step mascaras of similar price.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Based on my results I wouldn’t purchase this product.
Comments:
Lash Fantasy mascara is a 2 step system that includes a primer and mascara on opposite ends of the tube. The primer is a thick, white lotion-type formula that coats and thickens the lashes. The mascara itself glides on smoothly and I didn’t get any clumps. I really liked the thickness of my lashes with this product. It seemed to build volume and darken my lashes. Lash Fantasy held curl well and left my lashes soft instead of stiff. I was pleased with the overall look of my eyes with this product.
Unfortunately the fantasy ended a couple of hours into my day. Although my lashes continued to look great, the mascara constantly flaked and left black spots under my eyes. On each day I tested it the same happened, ruining an otherwise lovely mascara. Based on the flaking alone, I wouldn’t recommend Lash Fantasy.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, it’s definitely value for money, and I’d buy it again! Without a doubt!
Comments: I’ve already added this mascara to my ‘Must-have’ list. The primer and the colour are so easy to apply on, and it only takes two coats to give me this false-lashes effect. It extended my lashes so much I couldn’t help but look into the mirror all the time! It defined my lashes really well and it didn’t smudge all day. You do need an oil based eye makeup remover to remove the mascara, as it is quite stay-put.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: It’s not a bad price for a mascara, so I might buy it when I run out.
Comments: 5X the impact??? I was expecting va va voom lashes like Priscilla Queen of the Desert kinda lashes so I was a bit disappointed. As I have very long but thin lashes, it was a very nice mascara and didn’t clump easily but I really don’t think it vamped them up enough for what the packaging implied. However on a good note it is really nice ‘daytime’ mascara and it didn’t smudge under the eyes after a days wear.

Pros: Primer extends lashes well.

Cons: Tends to flake.

Revlon – Classic Nail Enamel Review

July 8, 2007 by admin

Revlon Nail PolishLivia’s Summary: We all tried the same colour (Really Rosy). This is a beautiful colour and the texture of this nail polish is very smooth. Everyone agreed that the staying power of this polish is excellent. Overall a fantastic product that lived up to and above our expectations.

Description: Rich, glorious, gorgeous color. It completes an outfit. It expresses your mood. It sets hearts racing! And Revlon® Nail Enamel is color at its most beautiful. With 56 chip-resistant shades to choose from, every aspect of your personality can have its day … or night!

Available:
Myer, David Jones, Target, K-Mart, Big W.

Price: $11.95

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Slightly Dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: This nail polish is great for the price. I will certainly be looking for more of my favourite shades in this range.
Comments: The bottle has a sensible shape that will not tip easily. The lid is a good size to hold while painting the nails. The colour has good depth so one coat will last for ages; it glides on easily, dries quickly and does not have a strong odour. Even the cat did not notice any odour.

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Definitely good value for money.
Comments: Revlon has to be my favourite brand for nail polish. I’ve tried several colours before & have never been disappointed. When you apply this nail polish, it goes on incredibly smooth & doesn’t take too long to dry at all. It is long lasting even though I have my hands in water all day and doesn’t chip. I love it & the colour is gorgeous too.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I would consider purchasing this product.
Comments:
I work in a very hands-on job and was able to really put Revlon Nail Polish to the test. I tested it twice, once alone and once with a base and top coat. Both times I applied two coats of polish. I was surprised to find that each time I got three days of chip-free wear, and a fourth day where I could get away with minor touch ups. The formula was very smooth to apply and drying time was about 15 minutes. The shine was average and tended to go dull from the second day onwards. However I felt the wear was above average for the price range and I would likely purchase another one if I found a colour I really liked.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: This is a bit expensive for me but I probably will buy it again because it was a high quality product.
Comments: This nail polish was very smooth to apply. It stayed on for nearly a week without chipping and the colour (Really Rosy) was beautiful. The smell was fine and just smelt like any other nail polish would. Overall I really loved this product.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: This is a very good price for what you get.
Comments: Whilst needing two coats (coverage with one coat was a little streaky) it went on my nails very smooth and actually stayed on for a day longer than most average nail polishes. My nails are very bendable and I’m really not that careful in keeping them nice and so nail polish generally chips off after a night, this stayed on for two days and even then only just started to chip a little at the top. So I for one am VERY impressed.

Pros: Good colour range, Excellent lasting ability and smooth texture.

Cons: None.

Clinique Super City Block SPF 30+ Review

July 8, 2007 by admin

Clinique Super City Block Livia’s Summary: A fantastic facial sunscreen with the highest SPF available in Australia. The oil free formulation is especially appreciated in our hot summers. This sunscreen contains titanium dioxide which is a physical sunscreen and it lasts on the skin all day. It is both a UVA and a UVB block offering excellent protection. Sadly one of our panellists had a reaction to the product.

Description: Skin is constantly under attack from the sun’s harmful UV rays and environmental assaults, whether you live in the city or the suburbs. Super City Block Oil-Free Daily Face Protector SPF 30+ is created for those women who love daily sun protection with a very high SPF, but enjoy a comfortable and lightweight texture.
Super City Block Oil-Free Daily Face Protector SPF 30+ is a subtly tinted, oil-free, non-tacky daily product that spreads easily and absorbs quickly. Suitable for most skin types, it leaves the skin with a fresh, natural matte finish.

Available:
Myer, David Jones. Clinique Service Centres
Stockist: 1800 061 326.

Price: $36.00

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, it’s good value.
Comments: A decent sunscreen that you can use on your face (without breaking out or greasing up) with the added bonus of slight tint. I only used it on weekends (non makeup days) and it was fantastic. If anything, a hint of powder over the top and you’re ready to go out.

Skin Type: Combination Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Although it seems expensive for what is ultimately a tinted sunscreen, it is hard to find high protection sunscreens that feel nice on the skin and evens the complexion like this one, therefore I think it is great value for money. Also, you only need a small amount so the tube will last quite a while. I will definitely repurchase.
Comments: I applied this product after I cleansed and moisturised in the morning. It did not ‘ball’ at all which is great, as sometimes this can occur between products. You only need a small amount, as it applies sheerly, yet evens out skin tone. It is creamy in texture but not too thick. Whilst it may feel a little greasy, or leave the skin shiny to begin with it does soak in. I sometimes followed with a little powder if I felt a little shiny. The smell is a little strong, as most SPF products are, but I don’t mind if I am getting sunscreen protection. I tested this on its own [gives a nice polished look] and before makeup. Makeup applies over it smoothly and evenly, but I don’t think it makes the makeup last any longer.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: I won’t buy this product as my perfectly normal skin reacted to it. It took a week to recover.
Comments:
I like the fact that it has very high sun protection and it claimed that it’s safe to use around the eye area. I found the smell a little ‘plastic-y’ and it feels slightly oily although it is oil-free. However, it does glide on smoothly. Unfortunately, my perfectly normal skin reacted to it – my eye areas became red and blotchy, and my skin became cracked and itchy. Advice is to try the product at the counter before you buy it as the skin reaction varies.

Skin Type: Combination Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: This product is a keeper for me, so far. Lightweight, fragrance- and oil-free, everything my acne-prone and sensitive skin would appreciate.
Comments: I like the sheer tinted colour to this sun block, as it reduces the white cast sun blocks usually give me. It doesn’t make me look shiny either, more of a dewy look, after application. The lotion texture also means that I don’t have to use much, and it’s easy to apply and blend into my skin.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I would most definitely purchase this product once I run out.
Comments: A good facial sunscreen is difficult to find. They’re always too oily, too smelly, too sticky etc. I’ve tried dozens and as each summer ends I’m no closer to finding my holy grail sunscreen. Until now. Clinique Super City Block 30+ exceeded my expectations on all levels! It’s a very lightweight, non-greasy lotion that glided onto my face smoothly and absorbed quickly without residue. It made my face feel soft and smooth and worked really well as a make-up primer. My face has tendencies to turn oily or breakout with sunscreens but as the day wore on City Block never melted or felt greasy, and my skin didn’t have a bad reaction. I also really love the fact that it doesn’t smell like a typical sunscreen. My face felt hydrated and balanced all day, my make-up stayed in place and I will certainly be re-purchasing this product!

Pros: Very high Protection, Oil free, UVA/UVB block.

Cons: Sensitive skins can react to SPF products.
Always test first.

Price: $4.95 (200ml)

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, it’s good value for money because of the various oils it contains. I will certainly be buying it.
Comments: A pleasant smell, a gentle lather and the skin feels much softer after use especially on the heels.

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, personally I expected to pay more for this product. It’s just great.
Comments: I’ve never used a shower oil before, but I liked it very much. It lathered up well and the smell was just divine. You felt so clean & invigorated after showering and left my skin feeling so smooth. I definitely will be buying this again.

Skin Type: Normal Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: It’s worth to spend money on this, as it’s a little luxury you sometimes need.
Comments: It looks like oil but isn’t that thick. It contains 55% caring oils but at the same time really foaming up so it is very smooth on your skin making it feel very silky after showering. It did not dry my skin out. I preferred using this shower oil more then normal body wash or soap.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: Yes this product was good value for money, as one bottle would last a long time. I will definitely buy this product again.
Comments: This shower oil had the most beautiful texture and I loved how it foamed up. The smell was nice and my skin felt very soft afterwards. I really enjoyed using this product.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: Great value for that price. I will get it again.
Comments: This felt a little oily, but it is 55% oil, however it foamed up very well and didn’t leave the skin feeling oily after it washed off. Rather my skin felt very moisturised. Be careful not to splash it on your tiles as it can make it very slippery but the bottle does warn you about that.

Pros: Great fragrance, very moisturising.

Cons: Can make shower slippery.

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: Again with Jurlique you really do pay for the quality so yes I would buy it.
Comments: A beautiful product which left my skin refreshed, glowing and feeling pampered. I really like the gentle herbal smell. I found it removed makeup fairly well too, but not waterproof mascara.

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I probably wouldn’t buy it at that price.
Comments: I didn’t mind the smell, the feel on my face was good and my skin felt well cleansed and fresh.

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Personally, it is a little expensive for me. I don’t feel that it is value for money.
Comments:
I liked the oily texture to of the cleanser. It lathered well and made my skin feel very clean & refreshed.

Skin Type: Normal Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: Found it to be more expensive then your regular facial cleansers but I fell in love with the product so I’ll splurge a little and purchase it.
Comments: With an orange jelly texture you only need a small amount on your face to make it really foam. I was really impressed with this product as it made my face feel baby smooth and extra clean. It had a pleasant refreshing smell. I found it not irritating on my skin and I didn’t break out from using it. I recommend trying this for those who have sensitive skin.

Skin Type: Slightly Dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: $40 for 200ml is good value for money and I would be happy to have it in my beauty routine.
Comments: This product has quite a few antioxidant properties in it such as green tea, grape seed & grapefruit with many other ingredients to help improve the skin. It is nice to use with a foaming action and washes off cleanly without any residue that others leave behind. Leaving the skin feeling fresh and invigorated.

Pros: Good cleansing ability and it lasts well.

Cons:Maybe a little pricey for some.

Revlon – Age Defying foundation with Botafirmâ„¢ Review

July 8, 2007 by admin

Revlon Age Defying FoundationLivia’s Summary: Once again a great foundation from Revlon. Beautiful to apply with a very pleasing smell to it. Even though this is a light foundation it gives good coverage. Great to see a high SPF.

Available:
Myer, David Jones, Target, K-Mart, Big W.

Price: $34.95

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Slightly Dry, Normal Combination.
Value for Money: A good quality foundation that I see value in having in my collection.
Comments: I love the smooth texture of the liquid: not too runny or too thick for application. Goes on with an even smooth finish that lasts all day. It even looks good under the harsh fluorescent lights that often make you look and feel washed out.

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, this is value for money. I loved it. In fact, I’ve loved all the Revlon foundations I’ve tried so far.
Comments: Once again, this Revlon foundation makes my face look so clear & flawless. It’s not thick to apply. It goes on so smoothly and if it makes you look younger, why not try it! I like it because it’s sweat proof and has a sunscreen in it also.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: It’s extremely good value for money – also a great all-rounder.
Comments:
I thought it’s a little early for me to use an age defying product as I have very young looking skin. But it gave me a great impression as it smells divine (refreshing cucumber)! It’s very lightweight and it gave me a healthy, radiant glow instantly. I walk a lot throughout the day so I love the high SPF30+ and the sweat-proof formula.

Skin Type: Combination Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: It’s kinda pricey, so I’m on the fence with this product. If it were cheaper, I’d buy it though.
Comments: The first thing that hits me is the fragrance. It smells like cucumber, and the scent makes me feel that the foundation is very light on my skin. It’s also moisturizing for my combination skin. The high SPF factor is a plus too, as I can go without sun block if I want to avoid piling stuff on my face, or on a lazy day.
On its own, it gives light to medium coverage. Covers my dark eye circles fairly decently too. Use it with powder, and the angry red pimples are concealed well. Staying power is pretty good… not much came off when I dabbed my oily face with a tissue about 6-8 hours after application.

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Yes. Great weekend product.
Comments: On the down side, I don’t have the skin/face of a 20 year old as I was hoping. On the up side, this was a really nice product to use. I’ve used Colourstay’s before and have thought of the Age Defying but never the Light makeup that I received. It’s probably a bit too light for work-wear but great for weekends. Really liked this product.

Pros: Good coverage, High SPF and sweat proof.

Cons: Coverage may not be adequate for some.

Livia’s Talks Beauty to Hot Tomato’s Renae King

July 7, 2007 by admin

Livia: Ok Renae, thanks for taking the time to talk to The Beauty Review. Now, before you became the ‘Queen’ of breakfast radio on the Gold Coast you studied fashion in Sydney. So what made you go into the fashion industry and what did you learn from it?

Renae: Right from when I was a little girl I loved clothes, creating and designing and would throw a pair of shorts over some fabric on the floor.. cut around them and sew them up. Having 4 daughters my mum quickly learned to be a good seamstress….and we always had the latest trends before anyone else. At school I was always better in art and textiles than the other more traditional subjects so it seemed a natural thing to do.

Livia: Being on Radio, how conscientious are you about your looks?

Renae: That’s the great thing about radio… no one can see you so you don’t have to stress. As I’ve gotten older… I don’t care so much about how I dress and I feel more than comfortable heading to do the groceries in my tracky dacks… But I do care about getting wrinkles…and in the last year I have started to use eye cream and really make an effort with skin care!

Livia: Of course one of the drawbacks of breakfast radio is the early starts in the morning, so what time do you get up and how much time do you spend on your beauty routine?

Renae: How I look at work really depends on what time I get up. I am a night owl so am generally running late cause I’ve stayed up the night before. On those days… I come to work with no make-up on….just moisturiser.. and a cap to cover the bad hair! If I have the time or know I have an event to go to when I leave work….I’ll moisturise, slick on some foundation, blush and mascara… then whip the straightener over my hair. I can be ready in about 15mins. I have never been a girl who takes ages to get ready.

Livia: What would be your beauty routine for a special night out?

Renae: A special night out is a bit different… then, part of the fun is getting ready. If I have time I’ll pop a treatment in my hair, do a full body scrub, cleanse and moisturise….then spend extra time on my makeup too. And if it’s a night with girlfriends…. There is always a bottle of wine or two thrown in. One night we spent so long glamming it up and testing out different products we ended up looking like very tipsy drag queens and decided to stay in for the night.

Livia: What is the one product you cannot live without and why?

Renae: I can’t pick just one…. I could not live without cleanser and moisturiser. I am not at all fussy with brand names and at the moment in my shower there are about 3 cleaners on the go from different price ranges. Everything from Chanel to Ponds! I use different ones depending on my mood and whether I’ve had makeup on or not. One of the cheapest moisturisers I’ve found and really love is Nivea All Day Aqua… but I’ve got a few of those on the go too.

Livia: Has your Mum ever given you beauty advice and what was it?

Renae: Not really… she’s always been a bit naughty maintaining a skin care routine…and with 4 daughters she always had one of us pinching her stuff.

Livia: Do you have a home remedy you swear by and if so, what is it?

Renae: I have done the cold teabags and cucumber on the eyelids and make-your-own face masks but I always make a mess. I love my herbal teas though.. I can’t get enough of them and have about 12 on the go at the moment. They are always good for a pick me up.

Livia: What would you say is your best physical feature?

Renae: Oh Livia, I don’t know… I always feel silly answering these types of questions. If I have to answer anything I would say my eyes??

Livia: What is one piece of beauty advice you would give our readers?

Renae: Never go to sleep with your makeup on and always moisturise. Even when you are so tipsy you just want to crawl into bed…or have a splitting headache you’ll feel 100% better for it in the morning.

Livia: Other than Latin dancing, brie cheese, prawns and Coronas, what else do you do to make yourself feel great?

Renae: At the moment I am training to run in the 10k event at the Gold Coast Marathon. Only two months ago I could not even run to the mail box without keeling over.. but now I can run 7.5ks without falling over and I am feeling great. It’s such an achievement and has really given me the fitness bug. Now instead of seeing it as a chore I see the training as something for me… a way to relax at the end of the day.

Clinique – Simply Fragrance. Eau de Parfum Review

Clinique Simply FragranceLivia’s Summary: Once again we see that fragrance is a very personal choice. This perfume is very different. It’s softly oriental without being very strong or overpowering. Even though I prefer soft florals, this perfume is a nice addition to my collection for those occasions I want something different.

Description: Clinique Simply is a sheer, vibrant new Oriental fragrance. The scent is sheer, with an unexpected warmth. The emotion behind Clinique Simply…a special time, special place. A new brightness inspired from petals of white flowers.

Wet, tactile, and velvety notes introduce this initial impression. It’s as if you could smell the sensation of touching the flower petal. Replacing vanilla notes of the traditional Oriental, soymilk inspires the creamy, comfortable nuance of the body. Notes of soy nut combined with a smoked wood feel provide a modern, easy warmth. This nuance redefines sensuality and warmth for a modern generation of fragrance users.

Available:
MYER, David Jones, leading pharmacies and Clinique Centres.

Price: 30ml $60.00, 50ml $90.00, 100ml $125.00

Skin Type:
Combination
Skin.

Comments: This fragrance had quite a nice smell although it didn’t seem to last throughout the day so repeated applications were necessary. I probably would not buy this product for myself because I do not feel that this product was value for money. .

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.

Comments: Clinique Simply Perfume first struck me as a pleasant, fresh and ‘uplifting’ scent. Very girly and soft, yet still different enough for me to get comments on while wearing it. At first I thought it was the perfect winter fragrance but I think it’s also very summery. An overall delicious, feminine, citrus/floral fragrance that works well for daytime without being overpowering and transfers well into night time wear. It’s priced in the same range, or slightly cheaper, as that of most department store perfumes. I would certainly consider purchasing it at its current price.

Skin Type: Normal Skin

Comments: On first application it smelled like very light liquorice at a distance and more like watermelon close up, but then it faded and reacted with my skin and started smelling more pleasant – still fruity but a light with implications of a late warm afternoon breeze in springtime.( Very poetic) My husband didn’t like it so I won’t be buying it.

Skin Type: Extremely sensitive, dry skin

Comments:This parfume is quite strong at first but after 30mins, it softens considerably. It’s not my usual scent but it was nice to try something different.

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin

Comments: This perfume had a soft, gentle fragrance which was neither floral nor fruity but had a slight oriental scent to it. It’s definitely worth trying if you are looking for that something different.

Clarins Le Rouge LipstickLivia’s Summary: This lipstick was really beautiful to use. The colours are strong and stay on well. The texture is creamy without feeling gluggy. Unfortunately Clarins are phasing this lipstick out over time, so if you want to try it visit the cosmetics counter soon.

Nourishes, softens and moisturizes lips. Promotes a felling of long-lasting comfort. Protects lips from free radicals responsible for signs of premature ageing. Apply directly or using a Lip Brush.

Available:
MYER, David Jones and other leading pharmacies.

Price: $40.00

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I feel it is a bit expensive for a lipstick, I couldn’t afford to buy it.
Comments: The colour of the lipstick is very intense. Very smooth to apply and felt great on. My lips felt moisturised when using it. Didn’t notice any plumping. Lasts a reasonable amount of time.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This is a very good product to use and although a little expensive I believe it is worth the extra.
Comments: It really helped to moisturise my lips. The colour stayed on well, and had a nice fragrance.

Skin Type: Dry Skin.
Value for Money: Quite pricey for a lipstick, but you get what you pay for, so I would buy this for myself.
Comments: I just love this lipstick. It glides on smooth, it feels soft and moist. The colours are beautiful and it’s long lasting.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This is very expensive for a lipstick, but it does all it claims to, so in the long term, it would be value for money. I prefer to use a lip-gloss then a lipstick and wouldn’t buy this for that reason.
Comments: It went on smooth and moist. It didn’t have any taste or smell. The colour was great and lasted through a drink, lunch and ice-block. It is a beautiful product and looks great.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: At $40 this is a little pricy for me, so no I would not buy this product, though it was nice to use.
Comments: The product went on thin and slightly watery but the coverage was good. I found that it did not feather. I found it brushed off easily without coming off completely. I had a red lipstick and it did not stain my lips overmuch which is another advantage.

Pros: Good moisturising lipstick with solid colour.

Cons: It’s being discontinued soon:-(.

Natio- Hand and Nail Cream Review

July 7, 2007 by admin

Natio HAnd CreamLivia’s Summary: A little bit mixed reviews from our panellists. Overall a nice average hand cream that is not overly greasy but for some, also not moisturising enough. The fragrance can be a problem for some too, as it is a little strong.

Description: A beautifully scented cream promoting silky-soft hands and strong, supple nails. Forms an invisible film to protect your hands from hard water and detergents. For all skin types.

Available:
MYER, David Jones and other leading pharmacies

Price: $8.95

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Combination Oily Skin.
Value for Money: I think that this is a good value hand cream. It is a decent size for the price and works well. I would not buy it for myself as I prefer a creamier hand cream.
Comments: It has quite a strong smell, but not unpleasant. It smells very natural. It seemed to be more of a gel/cream rather than a true cream, and soaked into the hands nicely, but did leave a slight oily residue which eventually soaked away. It left the hands feeling quite silky, but was more of an instant affect rather than a lasting one.

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: I think there is definitely better out there.
Comments: I’m a meticulous twice-a-day’er when it comes to hand & nail cream. At first I found the scent of this cream almost offensive, it’s so strong. When you put it on, it felt greasy for the first couple of minutes then seemed to absorb so much that it felt like you didn’t have cream on. After less than a week my nails started to get a bit weak and flaky and the skin around my nails started to harden. A week back on my old routine and my nails are fine again. Not fussed on this one.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: Great value, I’ll certainly buy it for myself.
Comments: This is one of your MUST HAVE hand creams for summer. It has a nice and light texture. I liked the simple packaging. It’s not greasy on your hands at all which is great. I don’t think it moisturizes enough for winter time and I found the smell of it a bit strong too.

Skin Type: Combination Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, it left my hands soft and for that price, you can’t beat it.
Comments: The scent’s a little too strong upon initial use, but the texture of the cream was good. It absorbed instantly, and there wasn’t any sticky feeling. Just soft, smooth & powdery hands.

Skin Type: Extremely Sensitive Dry Skin.
Value for Money: Good value for money but I wouldn’t buy this for myself.
Comments: I found this cream didn’t moisturise my skin well at all. The fragrance was too artificial for my liking.

Pros: Light cream formulation.

Cons: Doesn’t moisturise adequately.

Bloom- Eye Make-Up Remover Buds

July 7, 2007 by admin

Bloom BudsLivia’s Summary: Soft cotton buds that are individually filled with gentle eye make-up remover that contains Aloe Vera and Vitamin E. Perfect for touch ups or removing make-up.

Description: I fell in love with these little buds when I was working as a makeup artist. They are fantastic for correcting any mistakes, without any mess or fuss. It’s not really practical to use every day as a makeup remover but it is certainly worth it to keep in your emergency makeup bag.

Available:
Myer, David Jones. Visit the Bloom Website for other stockists.

Price: $10.00 (Pack of 24)

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: I will buy this again and again and again … I’m addicted!
Comments: It’s so easy to fall in love with this clever and cute little product! The box is ultra lightweight and the buds inside are soft and effective. It corrects all traces of eye makeup mistakes, leaving the area baby soft.

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Definitely. Would be perfect for the handbag or travel.
Comments: Thanks to an untimely sneeze, I got to try these out the first day. A quick read of the instructions, a quick snap of the bud and it was ready to go. It got mascara off from under the eyes quickly and easily. Found them to be wonderful.

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Yes this product is perfect if you travel a lot, as it is small, compact and easy to use.
Comments: What will they think of next? This eye makeup remover works well to correct and remove makeup. It requires at least 2 buds to remove heavier eye makeup. I would occasionally buy this product, just to keep some on hand for emergencies.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: I think that maybe the price could go a bit lower – after all, if you bought a packet of cotton buds and a makeup remover and dunked the buds in there to use, it would work out a lot cheaper. Actually I might just start doing that…
Comments: This product works well as a boo-boo fixer and to change your ‘look’ from day to night without taking your whole ‘face’ off. The product worked well to remove eyeliner, eye pencil and eye shadow however don’t touch your mascara!!!! It makes a big mess! (Though it didn’t even smudge my waterproof mascara) The remover was very gentle and caused no irritation. A great idea for a product and handy to have in your makeup kit.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This product was value for money but I would not buy it for myself because I believe that I would not use them very often.
Comments: I found the buds excellent for touch ups and rectifying mistakes but would not remove make up from the whole eye.

Pros: Quick and easy to apply and feels fresh on your skin.

Cons: No outstanding benefits.

Bloom- Skin + Tonic Mask Review

July 7, 2007 by admin

Bloom Skin TonicLivia’s Summary: Unfortunately I reacted pretty badly to this product so I couldn’t last the recommended 10 minutes. After I took the white mask off, I had a red one underneath it. It took quite a bit of pampering to calm my skin down. Overall most of our panelists thought this was nice enough for a bit of fun but not really for a serious treatment mask.

Description: A gentle take-anywhere mask treatment that is ideal for a facial pick-me-up and perfect for all skin types. Ideal to use morning or at night before applying your moisturiser. Restores a healthy glow to the complexion.

Available:
Myer, David Jones. Visit the Bloom Website for other stockists.

Price: $20.00 (Pack of 6)

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I am very biased towards Bloom so I would have to say yes. It is a great pick me up for the skin and I would buy it.
Comments: I had a few laughs from everyone at home when they came home and saw me wearing this white face, my 16 month old actually was scared of me!! My skin did react around the nose area but I felt my skin firm during wearing it. The fragrance was pleasant too.

Skin Type: Dry Skin.
Value for Money: I would buy this, however I think that for $20 there should be more that 6 masks supplied.
Comments: This is a very unusual face mask, it was fun. The smell is nice, just a slight fragrance, stays cool on the face. Leaves the skin feeling soft, clean and fresh.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I didn’t love this and wouldn’t buy it for myself.
Comments: This mask cooled the skin, but that was about it. I didn’t feel all that refreshed afterwards and the gel felt as if it just sat on top of my skin instead of absorbing. I still needed to apply a moisturiser after this face mask.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: As masks go $20 for 6 applications is actually not bad but I don’t think that I would buy it for myself as a regular thing.
Comments: This is a very fun product, great for girls’ nights in and sleepovers. The tablet that you put in a sachet of liquid when unfolded is actually like a baby wipe, with eyes, mouth and nose holes cut out of it… Pretty cool! The result of the mask was more like that of an application of a good toner than that of a mask, but it was still good for a little bit of a pick me up for my skin.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I don’t think I would buy this product again, I found it had no impact on my skin; I also found it to be a little expensive.
Comments: I think this would be a great idea for a girls’ night. The aroma was very relaxing and the mask felt pleasant once on the skin.

Pros: Quick and easy to apply and feels fresh on your skin.

Cons: No outstanding benefits.

Revlon- Fabulash Mascara Thickening

July 7, 2007 by admin
Filed under All Reviews, Mascara Reviews

Revlon MascaraLivia’s Summary: A very nice mascara that most of our panellists liked. One comment that was repeated often was that there was no clumping. Very important. It has a different brush so make sure you have a look at the tester before you buy it, but it is definitely one to keep in mind when you are looking for your next mascara.

Description: Get 100% fuller, beautifully soft, clump-free lashes. Exclusive lash-maximizing formula creates the fullest, most fabulous lashes. Silk proteins and vitamins A & E help keep lashes soft. The patented Lash Perfecting brush features short bristles that beautifully thicken and long bristles to perfectly separate. Ophthalmologist-tested and non-irritating. Suitable for contact lens wearers and safe for sensitive eyes. Also available in waterproof.

Available:
MYER, David Jones and other leading pharmacies.

Price: $19.95

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Yes this is a very good mascara for under $20.
Comments: This mascara was quite dry and took a few attempts of applying it to my lashes. Once it was applied however, I couldn’t believe how long and beautiful my lashes were. No clumping at all and it lasted all day.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: It’s a bit expensive and not worth the money.
Comments: This mascara actually didn’t do anything for my eyelashes. I believe I can find other cheaper mascaras that will make my eyelashes look longer and thicker. I don’t like its brush either.

Skin Type: Combination Oily Skin.
Value for Money: I think that this is great value for money and I would buy it again as an everyday mascara.
Comments: The first thing I noticed was the unusual brush, and I thought that it would clump a lot. But I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t clump at all! It gave good length and volume, but is not a dramatic mascara, probably best for day wear. When it dried it left my lashes feeling lovely and soft, and didn’t seem to smudge too much, just a little at the outer corners of my eyes by the end of the day, but I find this happens with most.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: It does what it says on the label. I will definitely buy it, for its lasting power and ease of removal.
Comments: I like the zigzag bristles – it fans out and defines my lashes with only one coat. No matter how many coats you apply it will never clump the lashes. I’m amazed by its staying power ( up to 12 hours even with a day full of activities) and it’s so easy to remove. Love the Blackest Black shade – it darkens your lashes so you can even skip the eye liner.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I think this is really good value for money, I found that the product did everything it claimed to do and I am definitely buying this one for myself.
Comments: This is a great mascara, no clumping, just really long natural looking lashes. Doesn’t have an over-powering odour and best of all no ‘panda’ eyes at the end of the day, it lasts!

Pros: Great mascara for under $20.00.

Cons: Mascara wand may not be to everyone’s liking.

Revlon- ColorStay Active Light Makeup Review

Revlon FoundationLivia’s Summary: Once again Revlon have succeeded in creating a fabulous foundation. Just as they promised the foundation is long lasting and yet light in texture. It is also sweat proof as a few of our panelist have put it through its paces. I was very happy to see a decent amount of SPF in a foundation that many will wear while exercising.

Description: ColorStay® patented “won’t rub off” technology. Soft Flexâ„¢ comfort technology provides a light comfortable feel. This lightweight, oil-free formula is sweat-proof, so you look and feel fresh through your active day. Contains SPF 25. Suitable for all skin types.

Available:
MYER, David Jones and other leading pharmacies.

Price: 30ml, $29.95

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, I will definitely buy this again because when you find a good foundation, you just have to have it again.
Comments: It was fairly thick to apply even though it didn’t go on thickly on my face. It made my face look flawless which I loved. It stayed on the skin really well throughout the day.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This is good value for a foundation. I do like this foundation however I still prefer Revlon new complexion instead of this one.
Comments: This foundation did what it said it would – “won’t rub off” – you have to have a really good make-up remover if you are going to use this foundation. It lasts all day through indoor and outdoor activities. It is great to have a SPF 25 included. The foundation covers very well and blends great, however it’s very thick and I found if suffocated my skin.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I found this product good value for money because it was long lasting. I would buy this for myself again.
Comments: This is the first colour stay foundation which has not dried out my skin. It stayed on for the whole day, and was light in texture.

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This product was beautiful and I would definitely buy it, great value for money.
Comments: I thought being colour stay it would be heavy and pore blocking but it was just lovely. It glided on beautifully, smelt great and definitely lasted. I wore it during exercising and it was still on after it.

Skin Type: Dry Skin.
Value for Money: Under $30 is good value for money; it’s a nice foundation that I would buy again for myself.
Comments: This foundation is excellent; I can’t believe how well it stays on. I came home from working all day and still had a good cover of make up on. If feels good on, it’s smooth and blends really well. Even heavy perspiration won’t move this make up.

Pros: Excellent long lasting foundation with SPF 25.

Cons: May be a little heavy for some.

David Jones- Fast Dry Nail Enamel Shade-Ballet Review

July 7, 2007 by admin

David Jones Fast Dry Nail EnamelLivia’s Summary: Mostly everyone liked this nail polish. Except for one of our panelists we found it to last reasonably well. Even though we all tried the “Ballet” colour, the selection in the range is quite good. It is a nail polish worth trying if they have the colour you are after.

Description: Apply 2-3 coats. Avoid heat. Do not use near flame. Shake well.

Available:David Jones

Price: $9.95 (15ml)

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Extremely Sensitive Dry Skin.
Value for Money: This is a good vaule nail polish at under $10.00.
Comments: I liked using this nail polish because it is Formaldehyde and Toluene free. I always try to use products that are least likely to cause irritations. It lasted well on my nails without much chipping.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: I will buy the exact shade – perfect for work and very affordable.
Comments: With an easy-to-control brush and smooth texture, it’s easy to get hot-looking nails. You do need 2-3 coats to get the best result and it will last for three days. The “ballet” shade looks fresh and neat, and it goes with any occasions.

Skin Type: Combination Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Even though this polish is not expensive I believe it is probably an average product, some cheaper polishes are on par with this one. I would not buy it again for myself.
Comments: The polish had the usual nail polish smell, which was as strong as they usually are. The polish I got was a creamy texture, which needed the three coats to achieve a solid colour; the two coats were still blotchy. I found that the first 2 coats dried reasonably fast, but the third coat (as they recommend) took a lot longer to dry. I managed to smudge/chip the polish within hours. Because of the creamy texture once the polish had dried, it peeled off extremely easily in one piece! I prefer a polish that lasts longer. Maybe the metallic formulations would be better.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I believe this product is great value for money, I found the product long lasting and I would definitely buy it for myself.
Comments: I believe this product is great value for money, I found the product long lasting and I would definitely buy it for myself.

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I thought it is a bit expensive but it is free of Formaldehyde and Toluene.
Comments: It had a smooth texture and the usual smell of nail enamel. I found the lasting ability of the polish quite good. It was also easy to apply.

Pros: Free of Formaldehyde and Toluene.

Cons: Can be slow to dry with three coats.

L’OCCITANE- Express Eye Treatment Review

July 7, 2007 by admin

Express Eye TreatmentLivia’s Summary: I love eye gels so I was glad to try this product. For me the product worked exactly as they said it would. My eye brightened instantly and the shadows under my eyes lightened visibly. I also found the gel texture refreshing and well absorbing. Even my husband is using it now.
From our panellists we got mixed reviews so go and visit the L’occitane counter and try the product for yourself. The staff are very friendly and accommodating.

Description: Formulated to refresh the under eye area, this eye treatment minimizes the appearance of puffiness and dark circles. Enriched in protective olive water, this fresh-feeling and non-oily gel protects and soothes the skin. The eye area looks instantly radiant.

Available:
MYER, David Jones and other leading pharmacies and L’OCCITANE Boutiques.

Price: 15ml, $39.95

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Priced at around $40, and on par with department store skincare, I liked this product enough to purchase for myself.
Comments: L’Occitane Eye Gel takes 5-10 minutes to absorb and when it does, leaves a completely matte finish. What it also leaves is an immediate improvement of the eye area! I found it lived up to its promises of reducing puffiness and dark circles – within minutes! My whole eye area seemed alert and brighter and felt soft and velvety to the touch. I also found fine crinkly lines under my eyes appeared reduced. The effect lasts all day or night. It’s probably best used at night, but I had success applying my make up over it once it had completely absorbed. An excellent product that I’ll be buying for myself once used up.

Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: I need to give it more time but so far, so good!
Comments: I was really hoping this would be as good as its word, and am still hoping that. The dispenser is fantastic in that you can actually pump however much you need. It felt really nice and light on the skin and absorbed quickly. I haven’t noticed any reduction in puffiness or darkness but it compares easily with my current eye cream that is triple the price of this.

Skin Type: Combination Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: No. Decent pricing but it’s just a mediocre product for me.
Comments: My first impression was that it’s lightweight and since it’s in gel form, it shouldn’t cause any milia for me. Scent-wise, it was light to nothing. It didn’t absorb immediately, leaving the eye area slightly sticky, but my eye area did look a little brighter than usual.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: It’s not very expensive for a brand name Eye Care Product. I don’t think I will buy this for myself as I didn’t have any results from it.
Comments: I think I will look for other brands which work for me. Besides that, its packaging is really nice, easy to use, just turn the cap to open or lock. Nice texture, absorb very quick, I don’t really like its smell much.

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I think it is good value because one drop on each eye area I found was sufficient. I possibly would buy it again.
Comments: On contact with the skin this eye gel felt really fresh. The puffiness was reduced. It had a slight smell but not unpleasant. When dry it felt a bit sticky.

Pros: Light gel formulation with pleasant fragrance.

Cons: May not reduce puffiness in all people.

Trelivings- Lavender Soap

July 7, 2007 by admin

Trelivings Lavender SoapLivia’s Summary: The first thing noticed by all of our panelists was the fragrance of this soap. It is truly beautiful. Amazing how we all like natural smells. I loved this soap and although I personally don’t use soaps in the shower I will definitely keep this as my guest soaps.

Description: Bathe and cleanse with the fragrance and essential oil extracts of Pure Tasmanian Lavender Oil.

Available:
MYER, David Jones and other signature retailers.

Price: $7.95

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Although a lovely product I would not purchase it for myself. I think it is overpriced for a bar of soap.
Comments: Trelivings Lavender Soap is heaven for anyone who loves the scent of lavender and just as pleasant for those of us who aren’t a fan. This soap felt amazing on my skin, lathered well and rinsed clean with no residue. The lavender oil scented my whole bathroom but was not evident on my skin after rinsing and drying. My whole body felt very soft and smooth after use. It’s an indulgent and luxurious product, however not worth $7.95 in my opinion.

Skin Type: Extremely Sensitive, Dry Skin.
Value for Money: I think it is good value for a soap containing essential oils.
Comments: I loved the smell of this soap. That is the first thing you notice as you unwrap it. It also felt silky smooth on my skin without any dryness. It was very nice to use.

Skin Type: Combination Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: Yes, I would buy this again. It would be better if it came in the form of a shower gel, it would be so much more convenient in the shower.
Comments: This is a pretty decent soap. It lathers up well, and does not melt easily under water. The scent is definitely a winner, light and relaxing, and it lingers on the skin for quite a while after showering. However, it isn’t very moisturizing.

Skin Type: Normal Skin.
Value for Money: Good value for a very nice soap.
Comments: I enjoyed using this soap. Of course living in Tasmania I’m partial to the Tasmanian Lavender. But it did feel very nice to use and I found it didn’t dry my skin at all like some other soaps tend to do.

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I think it is good value for money because it contains pure Tasmanian Lavender oil. I will certainly be buying this againI think it is good value for money because it contains pure Tasmanian Lavender oil. I will certainly be buying this again.
Comments: When one reaches a mature age it is vitally important to keep the skin looking good as long as possible. I loved the silky smooth feel of the soap and on the skin it felt wonderful. I also enjoyed the fragrance of the Pure Tasmanian Lavender – far superior to artificial lavender fragrances.

Pros: Contains pure Tasmanian Lavender Oil.

Cons: None.

Eyes Wide Shut – 7 Steps to Smoulding Eyes

July 7, 2007 by admin

The number one makeup concern for women is how to apply eye makeup. No wonder. When you see the photos of models on the catwalk or the suggestions in the magazines for the latest looks… well, if we had our makeup done like that, very few of us would actually dare to leave the house, let alone go to work or shopping looking like that.

Smoulding EyesAll you really need is a few basic techniques and the willingness to build on that. Oh, and a good eye shadow brush. Throw out those useless applicators you get with eye shadows. One of my favourite brushes is a David Jones brand one. It’s cheap, $9.95, but works better than some expensive ones I’ve used. It has nice and full bristles and a tapered edge.

Step 1: Choose a light natural coloured shadow as a base and apply it all over the lid, right up to the brows.

Step 2: Dab a small amount of darker colour shadow on the outer corner of the eye. Than with your brush, blend it along your lash line towards the inner corner of the eye.

Step 3: Still using the same shadow, blend some into the crease of the eye. This should form a side on ‘V’ shape. e.g >

Step 4: Once you are happy with the look of the application you can add more colour. But remember to go slow. It’s easy to add more colour but difficult to remove some.

Step 5: Line your eyes with eyeliner. For beginners, a pencil is best. Do not aim to draw one straight line. Rather feather your strokes, stopping often. This will allow you to blink, rest your hands and get an even line. Tip: only line your top lid, never the bottom as this gives the illusion of smaller eyes.

Step 6: Use mascara. Again, only on the top lashes. The transfer onto your lower lashes when you blink is all you need.

Step 7: As every painting needs a frame, so do your eyes. Choose an eye brow pencil that closely matches your hair colour and with feathered strokes colour in your eyebrows. Again, don’t aim to draw one single line as this looks very unnatural.

When you have perfected the technique start experimenting with different colours. You will be amazed how different your eyes will look with different colours.

With a little time and patience you will be able to apply your eye makeup like a pro. Then you can move onto the catwalk looks.

How to Beat Your Winter Skin Blues

July 6, 2007 by admin

With the onset of autumn and winter fast approaching, a lot of us are experiencing dry or drier skin. Our initial reaction can be to rush out and buy a heavier or more emollient moisturiser. While in some cases this is needed, for the most of us that is not the case. Why do I say that? To start with let me explain what a moisturiser is and isn’t.

The word moisturiser is actually quite misleading as it does not add any moisture to the skin. As we age our skin gets thinner allowing moisture to escape. The moisturiser simply acts as a barrier, prevents this water loss and helps maintain existing moisture levels in the skin. So how do we keep and maintain baby soft and comfortable skin during winter?

Here are a few recommendations to go by:

Only use very gentle cleansers and scrubs. Sometimes our tendency is to scrub those dead skin cells away as fast as we can. This however can do a lot of damage to the skin. Rather try an exfoliating lotion like Clinique Clarifying Moisture Lotion or Shiseido Bio-performance Intensive Clarifying Essence. These chemically exfoliate the skin without harsh granules to scratch or irritate the skin.

Use water-rich products rather than oil-rich. Sometimes all the skin really needs is literally water or moisture rather than oils in the form of a moisturiser. Especially if you are in a particularly drying environment such as air-conditioning, high winds, flying or extreme cold. In this case make sure your skin is moist before applying your moisturiser.

There are some great spitzes on the market that really hydrate the skin such as:

House of Herbs Organic Rose Hydrating Mist, Claudalie Grape Water, Shiseido The Skin Care Soothing Spray. Clinique also have a whole range called Moisture Surge and it contains a gel-cream, eye gel and a face spray.

These are all great to stop your skin from dehydrating. Personally I always carry a small bottle of face spray with me in my handbag, because most of these sprays you can use over the top of your makeup. So use them throughout the day, whenever you feel the need to.

Remember the skin south of your neck too. During winter, dry scaly skin on your legs, knees and elbows is not uncommon. A great way to solve this for me is to pour body oil in my bathwater. You don’t need much – the same amount as if you would be applying it directly to your skin but it’s the lazy person’s way of making sure your whole body is covered in oil. Also pure olive oil is fantastic, especially for the elbows and knees. Joan Collins recommends this.

Keep your lips and eyes well maintained. As both these areas have thinner skin and fewer lipids in the skin than the rest of the face, it is vitally important to look after them well. Not by applying heavy creams as this will only block the pores and cause milia and other problems but by using products that will retain the moisture levels.

Remember your hair. Hair takes a lot of beating through the colder months. In summer it’s the sun, salt and chlorinated water, in winter it’s the hairdryer and the cold. Apply regular hair masks or oils. I love Unrefined Coconut Oil in my hair but some prefer olive oil. Whatever it is you like to use make sure you do it regularly.

Following these suggestions, not only will your skin beat the winter blues but you will also develop great skincare routines that you will take with you into next summer.

Overall Rating

Skin Type: Dry Combination, Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: I’m not sure if I would buy this again, maybe occasionally.
Comments: This moisturiser goes on very smoothly. The smell of it is just beautiful. It worked well under my foundation too.

Skin Type: Normal Combination Skin.
Value for Money: This is average for a moisturiser, but even though I liked it, I wouldn’t buy it for myself as a face cream.
Comments: The smell was great, like an orange. It is lightweight and does leave the skin feeling soft. I prefer to use it as a hand cream; my hands feel really soft and smooth.

Skin Type: Combination Skin.
Value for Money: I found this product to be a little expensive so I probably wouldn’t buy it for myself.
Comments: I found this product really irritated my skin and dried it out. Although the citrus fragrance was nice.
