The Venus Embrace Closest Stiletto Relay

Be a part of a world record attempt and help support the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s research for a cure at the same time

It may come from years of running around hailing taxis or sprinting to the sales to snap up a bargain, but if you’re used to navigating your way around the streets in stilettos, then Australia needs you!  The Venus Embrace Closest Stiletto Relay will be staged at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Sydney’s Circular Quay on Tuesday, 28 September and teams of seasoned stiletto runners are needed.

Hundreds of Sydney women are expected to participate in this Guinness World Record attempt for the first ever 4 x 100m stiletto relay. For our great sporting nation to set a new official world record, all that is required is teams of four sprinters, with beautifully smooth legs in high heels measuring at least 3 inches.

Not only will they be competing for the smoothest baton transition to shave off those crucial seconds and get closer to the finish line, participants will also be supporting a cause which is close to many hearts.  Venus Embrace, who is a platinum partner of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, will be making a donation for every woman who enters in the race, to fund essential breast cancer research into prevention and cure.

Erin McNaught, well known for her healthy exercise regime and stylish looks, will be official event scrutineer on the day.  Erin will be checking heel height and leg smoothness prior to each race on the day.  As a model and VJ on MTV, Erin has had plenty of practice mastering stilettos, so she is more than qualified to oversee this eye-popping spectacle of luscious legs.

Erin explains that contenders will be vying for $10,000 cash as well as Peep Toe shoes up for grabs for all the runners up.

“Ladies, you might not be an elite athlete but if you’re like me then you’d be used to running around town in your stilettos. Not only will it be fun but you’ll also have the chance to win some great prizes and help to raise funds for a worthy cause,” said Erin “Simply get your closest girlfriends involved and enter as team of four. The only entry requirements are beautifully smooth legs that you are happy to show off and high heels measuring at least 3 inches!” she added.

Well-known model and face of ACP’s 30 Days of Fashion and Beauty, Nikki Phillips will be the MC for the event, providing encouragement to stiletto clad participants on the day.

Registration for the Venus Embrace Closest Stiletto Relay will commence from 8am at the Overseas Passenger Terminal on Tuesday, 28 September. Being part of a world record attempt is not the only reason to head down on the day, there will be prize packs, giveaways and a free goodie bag for all participants. Each goodie bag will contain cute pink shorts plus fabulous beauty gifts to get you summer ready, including a Venus Embrace for exceptionally smooth legs.  With five blades, it truly hugs curves to get virtually every hair – ensuring you are more streamlined and can get closer to the finish line.

The Venus Embrace Closest Stiletto Relay is part of ACP Magazine’s month long 30 days of Fashion and Beauty initiative.  To register for the event and to view terms and conditions, please visit www.30daysoffashionandbeauty.com.au

The Venus Embrace Closest Stiletto Relay is open to all women 18 years and over.

What was your first impression of the Product?
The Euro 3500 Ceramic Ionic Straightener stood out to me as soon as I laid my eager little eyes on it. Its modern, sleek design, packaged together with separating clips, comb and a cute, versatile black satin clutch proved to be only the beginning of my new found love for this outstanding straightener. The LED display, floating plates and variable heat settings stood out to me when I had a closer look and when I turned it on, wow! It was hot and ready to use in no time.

What was your experience using the product?
I really can’t recommend this product enough. After heating up in a flash to a temperature suitable for your hair type, the Euro 3500 glided easily through my hair. Its slim design enabled me to get it close to the roots of my hair, adding extra volume. It has dots on either side that you can feel under your fingers which let you know where to hold it so as not to burn yourself on its outer surface.  The floating plates were great in getting an even pressure on my hair which I believe helped also in not catching any hairs towards the ends, as my other straightener did. And then I got carried away with the curls…I had half curly and half straight hair and couldn’t work out what to do next. Curling is a breeze with this product. The curls are smooth, even and there-to-stay for a good night out. Once you learn the different techniques, this straightener helps you create exactly the look you’re after, be it straight, curly or somewhere in-between.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
As I’ve mentioned, compared to others I’ve used, this product heats up extremely fast, the floating plates make for even pressure leaving your hair silky and smooth. Unlike other products, this straightener does not leave your hair full of static. The ability to get the correct temperature for your hair type allows you to straighten your hair in one easy motion from root to tip, there is no need for repetition on the one section of hair. Because of this feature, I can now straighten my hair in less than half the time it used to take me. It works particularly well in styling my fringe which is prone to being wispy and fly-away. Instead, now it sits well and I have none of those unruly pieces left standing on end. The automatic switch off after 90 mins is a good feature for me also as I have burn marks on my bathroom bench from previous straighteners.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
I would definitely recommend this product to others, in fact, I already have. Its price is competitive to comparable products on the market. I would personally recommend this product above other popular comparable brands.

What Star Rating will you give this product based on your experience with it? (Out of 5)
Five of course! It was my absolute pleasure to try and now recommend this product.

Kimberly

What was your first impression of the Product?
I loved how the kit came with extras like, A storage clutch-This is fantastic for traveling,  A heat resistant mat- This protects my vanity while I’m using the straightener and stops it from slipping off the vanity which protects my toddler. And four easy to use hair styling clips- I find that these are essential when straightening your hair.

What was your experience using the product?
I’m not familiar with using a straightener that has an on/off switch at the handle, so the first few times I used I waited for it to heat up and then found I hadn’t even turned it on. But luckily it heats up really fast, which surprised me.  When using other hair strainers I usually find that my hair gets burnt or broken and often smells burnt. But with the Euro 3500 Ceramic Ionic Straightener I found that it glided over my hair with such ease and didn’t burn or damage my hair. My husband was also very happy to see that I was using a protective heat matt to protect our vanity.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
I can adjust the heat, depending on how I want to style my hair but the biggest benefit of all is it protects my hair.  My hair is dyed blonde so it is already fragile and its important to me use hair styling stools that don’t compromise the health of my hair even more so. Other straighteners I’ve used in the past have had very short cords, this makes it difficult to move around and do the back of your hair.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
Yes, because the straightener’s ceramic plat protects your hair, its long cord and light weight makes it easy to use. The temperature gage helps you create the right heat that suits your hair thickness.

5 stars Love it!

What was your first impression of the Product?
So excited to try it! Awesome packaging & was impressed because it’s very expensive!!

What was your experience using the product?
Fantastic product! I’ve tried so many styling tools to try curl my hair & this is the only one that actually worked!!! I woke up the next morning & my hair still had so much volume normally it would be very flat!! It heats up very fast & comes with a storage pouch, heat protection mat, with sectioning clips and a styling comb which so everything you need is there!

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
Heats up very quickly & easy to use! When I used it to straighten my hair it smoothed all my fly-ways – no frizz in sight! Other straighters still left my hair a tad fizzy especially in the back!

5 out of 5

Melanie

What was your first impression of the Product?
Wow!  The packaging was great – presented in a box, this Hair Straightener had an exclusive look to it.  The extras that were packaged were both functional and looked good; I particularly found the sectioning clips a boon.

What was your experience using the product?
This was a breeze to use.  My old one had a chunky feel to it whereas this one is very sleek.  My hair responded well on its lowest setting for straightening, and I used the highest setting for curling.  Both styles worked very well and my hair was left feeling smooth and shiny – not stiff and matte as it used to.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
Besides being a slim and light tool to use, it also left my hair feeling very swishy and light.  It’s a joy to use – and it’s very quick to get the style I want with a minimum of fuss.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
I have already recommended this product as well as encouraged my friends to give it a try whilst they visited – and they loved it.  Can’t do better than that!

Fiona

What was your first impression of the Product?
I really liked the presentation of this straightener. It comes with four sectioning clips, comb, heatproof mat and black pouch, so really everything you need to straighten your hair, and perfect for travel.
It would have some big shoes to fill, as I have used my GHD for the last two years and had been quite happy with it.

What was your experience using the product?
I switched on this straightener, put it right up to the top temperature (the hotter the better, right?)  Applied some thermal protection spray, and waited for a beep to tell me it was ready to go. And waited. And waited.
No beep.
Eventually I figured out there was not going to be a beep, and I started straightening. Once I got used to the idea that this is not a GHD, and figured out the correct way to hold it, it worked beautifully.
However, after the first few sections, I noticed that my hair was coming out a bit dull and “fried” looking. I adjusted the heat settings, and eventually got the perfect temperature for my hair. Hotter is not always better!
I did one side of my hair straight, slightly flicked under. The straightener worked really well, easy to position and the swivel cord made it very manoeuvrable. I did find that the barrel heated up quite quickly, making it hard to hold properly until I discovered there is a raised thumb hold to clamp it down firmly.
I decided to try to curl the other side, a technique that has always eluded me.
By now I had the temperature just right, and I was delighted to find that with a bit of a twist of the hand I was left with a lovely soft curl!
It was a bit tricky to get the curls and I did get a hot hand a few times, but I was very pleased as I have never been able to do more than one or two with my other brand straightener.
After a bit of experimenting, the results from this straightener have been excellent.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
I was really impressed with this hair straightener. I especially liked that the temperature can be adjusted. I have medium fine hair, and I have found that with other straighteners my hair often starts looking dull, dried out and fried halfway through straightening (even with my other straightener).
The adjustable temperature makes a wide variety of styles available; I have used a lower heat to just smooth my hair and get rid of frizz, but still keep my natural wave.
This straightener maintains a consistent heat, has automatic shut off (great for me as I am a bit of a scatterbrain…), very easy to use, comes with great accessories, and looks great.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
I would recommend this product to anyone with fine or medium fine hair. I didn’t realise until I started using this hair straightener the damage I had been doing by overheating my hair.

What Star Rating will you give this product based on your experience with it? (Out of 5)
I give this 4 out of five, I have to take one star off because of the barrel heating up, but overall this is a really great product.

Flora

What was your first impression of the Product?
I was very impressed, the packaging looks good and the products looked great. I was so excited!

What was your experience using the product?
It left my hair very sleek. The temperatures were perfect; it didn’t leave my hair feeling dry. I used it a few days straight and my hair still felt great in comparison to cheaper brands.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
This product works a bit better then other straighteners. The pouch, mat and clips made styling and storage so much easier. It is also very stylish.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
Possibly not since it is $239.95.

Caroline – Age: 40, Skin Type: Normal/Dry

What was your first impression of the Product?
As the name suggests, the appearance of the dryer is very sleek and elegant, almost the perfect ladylike accessory.  The packaging was very attractive, and the presentation of the packaging was quite luxe – as soon as I held it in my hands it radiating a very luxurious, expensive feel – and definitely was presented as an item of great quality.

What was your experience using the product?
Initially, my thoughts were “Well it’s only a hair-dryer so how much different can it be to any other”.  I was definitely mistaken – my hair is quite long, and whilst not extremely thick, there is a lot of hair – so generally speaking my drying time with my old hair-dryer was approximately 20-25 minutes.

Imagine my absolute surprise when my hair was completely dry in 10 minutes – yes 10 minutes. Not only was it completely dry but extremely shiny, free of flyaways and so healthy looking and bouncy.

To thoroughly review the product, I tested it again on my eight year old daughter’s hair, who has waist length hair. Again, drying time was half of what my old dryer produced, and the included benefits where bouncy, shiny hair.

Additionally the hair-dryer is quite lightweight, slim and easy to hold, whilst the concentrated nozzle distributes the perfect amount of heat to the areas required.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
The most obvious benefit to me was the drying time – both mine and my daughter’s hair which are both quite long were completely dry, healthy looking, shiny and sleek in ten minutes. I can’t imagine wanting any more for a hairdryer as this one delivers all of the benefits.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
Absolutely, again due to the fantastic performance – dried hair extremely quickly, with beautiful results – shiny, bouncy, smooth and sleek hair.

What Star Rating will you give this product based on your experience with it? (Out of 5)

Marilina – Age:43, Skin Type: Oily Combination

What was your first impression of the Product?
Compact, as the name suggests and lightweight.

What was your experience using the product?
I have long hair, therefore, I found it easy to manoeuvre and took no time at all to dry my hair.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
This dryer has a lot more power that mine and just the right attachments.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
I would recommend this product to others because so far it has lived up to its’ feature listing and it is made in Italy where they know what a woman wants.
My daughters want one now as they also test drove the dryer. Thumbs up all round.

What Star Rating will you give this product based on your experience with it? (Out of 5)
I will give it 4 Stars

Danielle – Age: 29, Skin Type: Dry/Sensitive

What was your first impression of the Product?
When I first opened it and saw ‘compact dryer’ I had my doubts. I hoped it would be an improvement on previous compact dryers I had owned – and that had burnt out pretty quickly. The packaging looked great and inviting – I liked the flip lid so you could actually see the product without having to open the box.
I must admit I held off for a couple days to use it based on what I thought it was going to be like. Once I had some more information about it, I quickly changed my mind and was keen to see if it lived up to its claims!

What was your experience using the product?
I was pleasantly surprised using the product! It seems compact dryers have improved dramatically over the past few years! It had good heat and power and easy to use controls. I thought it dried the hair very quickly. I tried it without any of the nozzles and my hair got more tangled than when using my usual dryer and I think this was because of the short barrel at the end. This is not a bad reflection on the dryer though. Using the nozzles stopped all the fly away hairs and made it easy to style. The only problem with the nozzles was if u wanted to change one while you were blow drying. The nozzles were too hot to change. The finished product left my hair feeling very silky & smooth with minimal fly away hairs.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
The benefit was that you felt like you were using a salon quality product in a compact design and getting salon quality results. The fact that the motor didn’t tire and burn out was also a benefit for a smaller model.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
I would recommend it to other people as it was a good size, was not too heavy to hold while drying, had a bit extra power and was easy to use. I liked it so much I am taking it with me to Melbourne this weekend!

What Star Rating will you give this product based on your experience with it? (Out of 5)
(4 stars – lost a star for the hot nozzles)

Kate – Age:35, SkinType: Normal Combination

What was your first impression of the Product?
More than anything I was shocked to get a hairdryer in the mail!  The dryer is not a whiz-bang looking machine; it’s black and pretty plain looking, but it is light and the cord is long.

What was your experience using the product?
I found it a little difficult to get used to such a powerful hairdryer, and at first I found it too hot, but once I changed the way I dried my hair, I loved it.  It is very powerful and easy to manoeuvre, and the nozzles concentrate the air flow wonderfully well.  My hair seems to feel softer since I have been using this, and it definitely saves me time in the mornings.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
It’s fast, light, the long cord means I can move about the bathroom and attempt (poorly) to multi-task.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
I would recommend this to others.  I found it easy to use and well designed, and it is a time-saver.

Jo – Age:42, Skin Type: Oily/Combination

What was your first impression of the Product?
The product arrived in stylish packaging it looked very professional and was easy to set up with clear instructions.

What was your experience using the product?
I have used curling wands before. I have curly hair but sometimes enjoy the control I can get with a wand. The Euro 2200 was easy to set up, easy to see and set my heat requirement and the ceramic tourmaline nano silver barrel heats up quickly and doesn’t grab your hair. Even with product in my hair it came away from the barrel easily. This superior non-stick meant that I got less snags and burns – that I like!

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
The way you can set your heat to suit your hair is brilliant. I know that I can style my hair without punishing it. Also the barrel non-stick finish was really effective. The handle was easy to hold and I liked the heat shield that comes with the pack – a great way to reduce heat related accidents.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
Yes I would recommend the Euro 2200. It is a good, well thought out product and it is at a good price for the features it includes.

What Star Rating will you give this product based on your experience with it? (Out of 5)
I love to have great hair days – five out of five!

Noeleen

What was your first impression of the Product?
I was very excited to receive this product as I’d never had a curling wand before but had always wanted to try one. Also being a product sold by the Shavers Shop I knew I was trialling a quality product.

What was your experience using the product?
I thought the item was nice and light-weight .. didn’t seem to take too long to heat up.  It took me a little while to work out the best way to use the wand but once I got the idea I got through the curling fairly swiftly.

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
I found if I used hair product with the wand I got a curl that lasted quite some time.  Not having used one before I couldn’t make a comparison.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
I would recommend it because I had a good result. However it would depend on the hair type of the person I was recommending it too.  I don’t know how it would go on someone with very thick hair.

What Star Rating will you give this product based on your experience with it? (Out of 5)
I would give this item a 4 out of 5.

Fiona – Age:52, Skin Type: Oily

What was your first impression of the Product?
Looks very nice

What was your experience using the product?
Easy to use , heats up quite quickly. I had to keep the tong curled for a while to get the curl to stay in my hair

What benefit does this product have compared to others you have used in the past?
It has a very good surface which your hair slides easily on and off

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
For the price point, it is a good product because it doesn’t seem to damage the hair and you get a good curl

What Star Rating will you give this product based on your experience with it? (Out of 5)
I would rate this product 3.5

Lesley – Age: 56, Skin Type: Oily Combination

What was your first impression of the Product?
To be honest I was disappointed – not because of the actual product but because I NEVER do anything to my hair.  No appliances and very little product.  I tell my hairdresser that she has to cut it well enough so that I don’t need to.

What was your experience using the product?
Probably because I’ve had very little experience in using this type of appliance, I found it difficult to manipulate.  My biggest problem was trying to eliminate the kink at the end of the hair.

Would you recommend this product to others? Why?
Well, I can’t and don’t want to use it, but I can see that others might think it essential and beneficial.  I can see that it is a very well made product, and certainly could do the job it is intended for.

Code Napoleon: Makeup Rules to Live By
Napoleon Perdis Drafts New Beauty Constitution

Napoleon Perdis is drafting his own influential Code Napoleon, a chain of essential makeup maxims to live by. The
tenets, which cover everything from the importance of priming to the value of self-empowerment and precisely when to apply mascara, distill the cosmetic king’s beauty philosophy refined over the last 15 years. Perdis not only lives by these rules but shares them with every woman he comes in contact with, whether she’s a model, celebrity or civilian. “My code is practical and easy to subscribe to,” says Perdis. “I’ve been using these tips for many years but I saw the need to reiterate them again for my customers.”

Vive la Code Napoleon!

• Not to prime is a crime—for now and evermore
When Perdis launched his cult Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Primer over seven years ago, he had an inkling it would resonate with women everywhere. “It was a period when primers were not as readily available as they are now,” he says. “But ours has lasted the test of time.” The Auto Pilot version is the ultimate canvas for makeup application. It’s like a second skin that smoothes the complexion, mattifies the T-zone and ensures makeup lasts all-day long. Additionally, the primer is loaded with skin-rejuvenating ingredients including Chamomile, Yarrow Extract and Vitamin E.

• This nation needs to rally around foundation
No woman should go without a stellar base, which is why we offer seven different formulations. No matter whether you prefer liquid, powder or aerosol, we have you covered in an array of flattering shades and finishes. “China Doll offers a velvety matte finish, Boudoir Mist creates a luminous glow, and Stick Foundation is the ultimate coverage,” says Perdis, listing three of the leading varieties. “Foundation is the one thing women should never skimp on. It’s a makeup must-have. Why? It obscures imperfections, counters discolouration and create a dazzling flawless look. Case closed.”

• Mascara is black gold. Apply it first and last
“Blame it on Sophia Loren, but I’m obsessed with long, luscious lashes, and I can’t imagine creating a look without mascara,” says Perdis. “That’s why we have 10 different wands to choose from. Whether it’s volumising, lengthening, priming or coloring you seek, I have the wand for you.” Kick off every look with mascara—it’s the perfect launch pad and influences the rest of your makeup. Finish with a second coat for an injection of Loren-worthy glamour. Black gold indeed.

• Line your lips after applying lipstick—not before
It’s a common misconception that you should line the lips before you apply the colour—not in the world according to Napoleon. Apply your lipstick and then use a pencil to line around the edges. The liner will glide on smoother than it does on a bare mouth, leaving a more natural outline but still preventing the lip colour from bleeding. High precision liner seals your lips for long-lasting results. “Use my ‘outside in’ liner technique,” says Perdis. “Begin at the outside corner of your mouth and use a feathering motion to draw the line to the middle of the lips. Repeat on the other side.”

• Refresh your makeup each season with vibrant new colours
Why not mix things up a little? Changing up a few colours in your makeup kit can boost the spirit and dramatically alter your look. If you veer towards neutrals on the eyes, try a bolt of electric blue or purple. If red is your go-to shade for lips, step out of your comfort zone and sample an orange lipstick like DéVine Goddess in Hara. Add colour or trade colours for sultry, statement eyes. “Try a metallic smokey, with brilliant shades infused with silver, bronze or gold,” says Perdis.

• Never forget to bring out the celebrity in you
“Every woman has the right to experience the thrill of red carpet-inspired glamour,” says Perdis, who approaches each client as if she were a Hollywood starlet. The rise of social media has meant that daily life has become a photo opportunity—and who doesn’t want to put their best face forward on Facebook? What’s more, looking good invariably translates as feeling good. “I like to try and empower my clients with the most flattering looks in my book of tricks.” Discover your own knockout style, be confident and treat every day like you’re stepping on to a red carpet.

About Napoleon Perdis

Skin Bright -The Best Skin Brightening Products on the Market

Skin Bright
The Best Skin Brightening Products on the Market

In Australia a tanned skin was generally considered healthy as it related to sun, surf, beach and the time to enjoy them. However attitudes are slowly changing and more emphasis is being placed on clear, bright skin to indicate youthfulness and health.

All too often the words ‘anti aging’ conjure up images of lines and wrinkles  disappearing from the skin, however interestingly most of us consider unevenness in skin tone and age spots much more aging than wrinkles.

The research and findings of what prolonged, unprotected exposure to sunlight does to skin is now clear. And research shows that Australian women want to embrace their natural skin colouring minus the unevenness in skin tone and age spots.

For this reason a whole new genre of skin care products are gaining increased popularity.  The Brightening/Whitening products are making their way into beauty cabinets of Australian women. Of course these products have been around for a while now and they are hugely popular in Asian countries where the focus is on lighter, clear, even toned and flawless skin. In Australia the focus is less on whitening and more on evening out skin tone, discolourations, age spots and blotchiness.

Over time the technology and ingredients have improved vastly. Today there is a considerable amount of ingredient and products that can be used safely to achieve the much desired results of clear, bright skin.
The good news is, most of us are realising that: A clear skin with some lines is attractive, healthy and real.

AUSSIE MEN NEED HELP GETTING IN TOUCH WITH THEIR SENSITIVE SIDE

AUSSIE MEN NEED OUR HELP GETTING IN TOUCH WITH THEIR SENSITIVE SIDE

According to new research* nearly two thirds of young Aussie guys claim to have sensitive skin – which may be unlucky for the eight out of ten women who said they would find signs such as facial redness, flaking, rashes or bumps a turn off in men. The study conducted by Gillette found that sporting more severe sensitive skin symptoms would cause eight out of ten guys to feel embarrassed, self-conscious or frustrated and close to half (46%) to postpone a first date.
With women being turned off and potentially stood up, it’s time to help men out! There are a number of things that women can do to help their man lift his grooming game and thankfully almost two thirds (64%) are confident that he would listen to their advice. Leading Australian dermatologist, Dr Lim, provides some tips.
•    Not surprisingly, 60 percent of guys put signs of sensitive skin down to shaving, but shaving-related skin issues are often the result of incorrect shaving technique or using dull or poor quality blades. Using fresh, good quality blades will result in a much closer, more comfortable shave. Storing the razor in the bathroom cabinet is a good way to prolong the life of the blades as it’s away from moisture and wandering women’s hands!

Gillette tip: With a 5-blade suspension system that adjusts to the contours of your skin to reduce irritation, Gillette Fusion is the razor most recommended by US dermatologists . The five blades are spaced together to help reduce pressure for a more comfortable shave. An Enhanced Lubrastrip which fades from blue to white signals when shaving conditions are no longer optimal, reducing the risk of irritation due to dull blades.

•    Contrary to the way women shave their legs, guys should shave with the grain to start with and then back against it if necessary. Rarely does facial hair grow in the one direction, so help him map out each stroke. Get him to grow some stubble and then use a mirror to see which way the hair is growing in each area. Those with really sensitive skin and a susceptibility to in-grown hairs should be careful of over-shaving and shaving against the grain as it may aggravate the condition. Mastering his shaving technique will help avoid nasty bumps and lumps.

•    Encourage your partner to take a few minutes to step up his skincare routine. Beard hair can be as tough as copper wire, so it’s important to leave gel on for at least a minute or two before shaving to reduce the cutting force. Applying an alcohol free moisturiser after shaving will also help replenish and rehydrate the skin, resulting in smoother, more comfortable skin.

Gillette tip: The Gillette Fusion HydraGel Pure + Sensitive helps protect the skin during the shaving process and is great for men with sensitive skin. Follow the shave by applying the Gillette Series After-the-Shave Moisturiser to help rehydrate the skin, leaving it feeling smooth and comfortable.

•    Remind him to avoid shaving before prolonged periods in the sun, surf or playing sport. Shaving opens the pores and perspiration can increase the chance of irritation.

•    Four-in-ten guys who suffer from sensitive skin have grown stubble or facial hair to cover symptoms, suggesting that ‘designer stubble’ may be the male answer to concealer. Don’t fall for it. Find out what’s missing in your partners routine and help him address it.
Inspired by the science of shaving, Gillette has a range of products designed to provide great performance on sensitive skin. Even the most inexperienced groomers will be able to incorporate these products into their shaving routine.

Gillette Fusion Hydra Gel Pure + Sensitive 200ml (RRP $6.99)
Gillette Fusion Gamer Manual (RRP $12.59)
Gillette Series After-the-Shave Moisturiser (RRP $10.99)

These products are available now from leading supermarkets and pharmacies.

National Poll About Aussies Shower Habits

March 24, 2010 by admin

GROSS…75% OF AUSSIES ADMIT TO SHARING SOMEONE ELSE’S SOAP!

- National poll reveals scungy statistics about Aussies shower habits -

It seems we are not so squeaky clean when it comes to our showering etiquette. . . New research out today from Palmolive Naturals, Australia’s most trusted shower gel range, has revealed a whopping three quarters (76%) of Aussie soap users have found human hair on their soap!

The survey asked men and women Australia-wide to confess all about their shower routines and uncovered some hairy findings. Surprisingly, 71% of households still use bar soap as opposed to shower gel. 56% of self-confessed soap sharers admit to using their partner’s soap without them knowing and 22% admitted to secretly using their friend or flatmate’s soap.

Now here’s where it gets really dirty… have you ever wondered where your soap has been? When questioned about their showering routines, 44% (the majority) admitted to washing their face first, with 20% washing their bum last, – so just think about which body part was washed last before you go to wash your face in the shower tomorrow!

So to combat unwanted soap nightmares, Palmolive Naturals has embarked on a mission to encourage people to drop the tired and traditional bar soap and switch to a more refreshing option – shower gel.  “It’s quite disturbing to hear so many gross stories from Aussies about their soapy experiences,” comments Palmolive Senior Brand Manager, Peter Laforest. “Soap hoards all manner of nasties – from dirt to hair – and it’s about time Aussies ditched the soap in favour of shower gel.”

So why are people still using soap?

When questioned, the bulk of soap users confessed to using soap simply out of habit, rather than for any cleaning properties or price offers, in fact, 64% admitted to it even drying out their skin.

And hold your noses ladies – 66% of men still use soap (versus just 39% of women), while a scary 61% of men admitted to keeping a bar of soap for a month or more and a jaw-dropping 1 in 2 (51%) said they wouldn’t stop using soap even if it was harbouring germs!

The survey also revealed:

· Aussies living in Queensland (outside Brisbane) were most likely to share soap with a partner/friend without them knowing (48%)

· A handful of respondents admitted to finding boogies and even cockroaches on their bar of soap!

Unlike soap which often dries out your skin, Palmolive Naturals shower gel range is pH balanced and 100% soap (and hair!) free so Aussies can enjoy soft and smooth skin every time they shower, without being concerned about where their shower gel has been!

DON’T WANT BUM ON YOUR FACE? DITCH THE SOAP!

Palmolive Shower Gels – the only place they’ve been is in the bottle

Clear Skin is Always In! Tips to get the most out of your concealer.

September 15, 2009 by admin

The holy grail of makeup if flawless skin. If you are not genetically blessed with even toned, peachy, glowing, porcelain skin, thankfully you have a few tools at your disposal. Achieving a clear skin is not just up to your foundation. A key element is the concealer.

Yet applying concealer can be a very daunting prospect for many women.

* What is the best way to apply concealer?
* Where do you put it?
* How do you choose the right shade?
* And, how much do you apply?

All these are questions that we will endeavour to help you with. The truth is, there are many different types of concealers; all doing a different job for the different problems we want to disguise. Dark circles, blemishes, redness, uneven skin tone and acne or otherwise scars are the most common. With concealers we aim not to make the problem disappear but rather aim not to draw any attention it.

Choosing the Right Colour

The best and easiest way is to choose one that is closest to your natural skin tone. When you have the correct colour it will seem to disappear on the skin, yet at the same time eliminate the imperfection. There is a lot of talk about using pink concealers for sallow skin, peach for black/purple discolouration and green for redness, however this can get quite complicated and you have to be very experienced to apply it in a way that is not noticeable. So if you have a concealer that is of good quality and is right for the job all you need is the right colour. Choose a concealer that has a high pigment level and is not too drying on the skin so as to actually cover the blemishes rather than sink into the skin.

Eliminating Dark Circles

The number one step is to use a moisturising cream around the eyes. This tops the concealer from caking. To ensure the concealer stays put for the whole day apply a make-up primer first. This will ensure the concealer will adhere to the skin rather than settle in the creases around the eye. Choose a concealer that is of a creamy consistency and has light reflecting properties. Apply with a synthetic concealer brush and then use your fingers to press it into the skin. Contrary to popular belief you shouldn’t use powder to set the concealer around the eyes as this will only cake it and accentuate the lines. By using the make-up primer, everything should stay in place. One last word of caution; don’t choose a colour that is too light as it will give you ‘panda’ eyes.

Blending Out Blemishes

A great trick I once learned from a makeup artist is to use Visine (or any other anti-redness eye drops) on the blemish before applying anything else, to reduce redness and swelling. Also make sure that any spots you have are not weeping but dry before you apply concealer. Then with a small pointed brush, dab some matte concealer directly on the spot, let set for a second and pat with finger around edges to blend. Repeat if needed. Once the concealer has adequately concealed the spot, apply some loose powder with a puff to set it in place.

Reducing Redness

Because redness can appear over a larger sized area I have always found the best way to conceal it is over the top of your regular foundation. This way the foundation will naturally cover the majority of the problem and you will clearly see where you still need a little additional help. Also this way you will not get large cacky areas that are obvious. Ensure that your skin is well-moisturised and use a creamy concealer in the areas that require coverage. Let it dry than add additional layers if required. Dust over with loose powder or as one of my favourite tricks; select a luminescent powder to add a glow and illuminate the face.

Last Tips

Remember with concealers less is more. You don’t want to create a mask of makeup, rather an even smooth complexion. If you feel like you have applied too much concealer, pat a small amount of moisturizer over the top of your makeup. This will give you a radiant glow and reduce dehydration. It is best to use a good quality brush to apply your concealer as you have more control over the application of it, especially in small areas.

3 Tips to Take Fragrance Shopping

September 15, 2009 by admin

Spray or Blot?
When shopping initially for a new fragrance it is a good idea to use the blotters provided. This way you are able to sniff a larger variety of perfumes without being overwhelmed with too many scents on your skin. When using a blotter be careful not to touch it to your skin, rather lean over the paper and inhale the scent then move the paper away for a few seconds.

Repeat the process a few times to get the true smell of the perfume. Wait a few minutes before moving onto the next fragrance. Once you have found a few you might like it is absolutely vital to try it on your skin. This is for a few reasons. The fragrance will smell different on everyone as it mixes with your natural smell and the acids and oils on your skin.

Second, you need to wear a fragrance to really see how you truly feel about the smell hours after you have applied it and to see how the fragrance behaves. If you can it is best to ask for a vial of the perfume so you can take it home and try it on in an unadulterated environment. Try it on in the morning to see how it works for you during the day and try it on in the evening to see how it wears at night. If you still like it after the whole process, buy it .

Classic or Modern
Whether we like it or not, we are all influenced by marketing and fashion. We all like to be modern and at the head of the trends. However, do we choose what’s the latest or should we stick to the enduring classics? There is a reason these fragrances have become classics. There is something magical and universally appealing about their allure. These fragrances are often described as works of art that are timeless in their elegance.

However the latest fragrances often have an edge about them that is hard to beat. Just as fashion changes, perfume styles change too. From fresh watery florals we can change to deeper woody scents. The trick is to trust your own nose and how you will react to a fragrance. Ultimately you are the best judge of what will suit you, so while it is good to check out all the latest offerings give the classics a go too as you might just be pleasantly surprised.

One or Many
Women around the globe are on the hunt for their own signature scent. Something that will convey in a whiff who they are and what they are all about. Or is this an outdated, old fashioned notion? With the millions of different perfumes on the market can a girl limit herself to just one fragrance? While it is good to have one fragrance that is your ‘perfect’, signature scent, which you know will smell fabulous on you no matter what the occasion is and you will always get compliments on it, limiting yourself to just one scent has its drawbacks.

Not only will it loose it’s specialness by wearing it all the time but you may be perceived a being predictable and boring. Also just as your tastes change in your personal style, your taste can change in fragrance too as you age. So rather than limiting yourself to just one perfume and sticking to it no matter what, it is a good idea to find yourself a wardrobe of signature scents. Just as you have outfits for different occasions, have perfumes to match the occasions. It is estimated that most women by the age of thirty will have three or four signature fragrances that they can call on, depending the event. So have your staples but keep experimenting; you might just find your next signature scent.

The Effects of Sunburn – Not Just Skin Deep

by Dr Graham Aldous

Australians lead an outdoor lifestyle, which means significant sun exposure. It is well accepted that UV wavelengths in sunlight are the prime cause of skin cancer which claims around 1,500 lives each year and costs the health system around $300 million. More than 8,300 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year and that number has grown more than 100% since 1985.

UV radiation in small doses has some positive benefits, for instance promoting vitamin D production which is essential for health, but exposure to UV radiation for extended periods of time has serious health consequences. In the short term, painful sunburn can develop, the immune system can be suppressed and the skin damaged through drying, peeling and blistering. In the long-term, UV radiation can cause skin cell damage through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and direct DNA damage. Studies have also shown UV exposure can cause a generalised, systemic weakening of the skin’s immune response.

The skin is more than just a physical barrier. It is important in producing vitamins and substances that promote health and well being. It has its own immune responses. The skin’s ability to protect itself from foreign invaders and skin cancer relies on a vital and active immune system

The mechanism whereby Ultraviolet radiation induces a suppression of the immune system is complex, being both multilayered and multi cellular. One important aspect of the mechanism involves cells of the immune system, called antigen-presenting cells, resident in the skin. Their function is to capture foreign invaders and carry them to the lymph nodes, where immune response starts.

If exposed to UV radiation, these antigen-presenting cells can be directly damaged or be suppressed by proteins called cytokines leading to a reduced immune response. A fully functional immune system provides the body with a defence mechanism for the elimination of developing cancer cells. If the immune system is compromised then the body’s ability to eliminate these cancers is reduced. The amount of UV radiation required to induce an immune suppression is less than needed to cause sunburn.

The role of the immune system in preventing skin cancer is clearly illustrated in individuals whose immune system has been compromised, such as patients who have had kidney transplants. These patients have a significant increased risk of developing skin cancers.

The importance of UV-induced immunosuppression is understood by the World Health Organisation which has recognised that UV exposure is of considerable concern to human health. It has suggested public health policies should raise awareness of the effects of UV exposure, particularly considerable hazards like immunosuppression.

Realising the importance of protecting the skin against a decreased immune system, Australia’s leading sunscreen developer, Hamilton Laboratories, has developed a world first sunscreen to help protect not only against sunburn but also against UV-induced immune suppression. Hamilton is the international forerunner in sunscreen development, having formulated what is believed to be one of the first commercial sunscreens in the world in 1932.

After more than ten years of extensive research, Hamilton Optimal Enhanced Protection Sunscreen was launched last year and has raised the bar on sunscreen knowledge and innovation. Hamilton Optimal was developed in a collaborative project between Hamilton Laboratories and researchers at The Flinders University of South Australia and Flinders Technologies Pty Ltd. Tests designed to specifically measure the response of the immune system on exposure to UV, clearly showed that Hamilton Optimal could reduce the suppression of the immune system induced by ultraviolet radiation.

Hamilton Optimal is a registered product that makes the claim “UV induced immune suppression may contribute to the development of some skin cancers. Hamilton Optimal sunscreen helps to reduce some of the effects of UV induced immunosuppression” and is the only product in Australia that currently can make that claim.

Hamilton Optimal retails for $15.95 for a 125ML and $18.95 for a 250ML and is available in pharmacies nationally. For stockists phone 1800 882 592.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Light-Weight Daily 30+ $17.99

Description: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen is the only product range in Australia to contain patented Helioplex technology, which provides broad-spectrum protection from UVB rays – the primary cause of sunburn – as well as UVA rays – the main cause of long-term skin damage and up to 90 percent of premature skin ageing. The breakthrough Helioplex technology effectively absorbs the hazardous UVA and UVB rays, providing photostable’, durable protection – meaning it won’t break down or lose its ability to protect the skin, even when exposed to sunlight.

Linda – Age: 58,  Skin Type: Normal

My first impression when I opened it was the light pleasant smell. The smell was really nice, and light. The texture was very easy to apply, not thick and sticky like some other 30+.

I noticed that it wasn’t shiny on the skin, and I couldn’t tell I was using a sun screen. It left me feeling silky. I would purchase this sunscreen again, I really would, I liked this product a lot.
I would give it full marks 5 out of 5.

Jacqueline – Age:37, Skin Type: Dry Skin

I could not wait to try this sunscreen! The smell is really lovely and the texture is fantastic, I really like this product!

Living in the tropics its really hard to find a sunscreen that isn’t sticky once you have applied it and this product really does live up to its claims. It does dry into the skin quickly removing that ‘ick’ factor and as it does dry quickly it gives me more confidence knowing that the product will work.
I will DEFINATLEY buy it again!!!

Nicky – Age:37  Skin Type:Normal Skin

I thought this is too good to be true – sunscreen is oily!
This feels nice to touch but too smelly for me. This sunscreen is not oily as promised.
I would buy it again, it feels nice on the face not oily at all – amazing! I give it 4 Stars– if they could reduce the smell a touch it would be a 5.

Magdalena – Age:32  Skin Type: Oily Combination Skin

Packaging was very nice and the description at the back was quite informative.
The texture seemed a bit thick but it actually applied quite easily without stretching my skin. It soaked right into the skin and didn’t leave a film that a lot of sunscreens do. I usually get breakouts from heavy moisturizers and creams but my skin responded very well to this one.
I think it may give a better protection than others sunscreens because even after all day in the snow ( I did reapply) I didn’t get any redness on my face. Usually I’d be quite flushed from all sun/snow exposure and with this cream I had just a tiny hint of color on my nose and cheeks.
I will definitely be buying this Sunscreen again!!
I give it 4.5 stars
Half star is missing as I would prefer the packaging to have a pop up lid so one doesn’t need to fiddle with a screw on cap while in the great outdoors.

Leanne – Age:37  Skin Type: Normal Skin

I was impressed with the packaging, the smell & definitely the feel of the product.
The product smelled great & the texture lived up to my expectations. It really does have a dry-touch feel to it.
I found that it was comfortable to wear all day due to the dry-touch factor. There is no sticky feel to this product at all. I am absolutely going to purchase this product & recommend it to friends.
I would definitely give it a 5. The product lives up to its promises.

Lesley – Age:56  Skin Type: Oily Combination Skin

I applied it and waited to see how different it was to any other sunscreen. It had a nice smooth texture and didn’t notice any smell really. It’s not shiny or greasy.  No one would even know you had it on.  Very nice. I will definitely buy it again. I give it 4 Stars

Lori – Age:32  Skin Type: Normal/Oily Skin

FANTASTIC!
Exceptionally high coverage, easy application, no WHITE face, as with sunscreens that contain zinc. When I put it on, it left my skin (face) feeling incredibly smooth and soft. It was a light smell, and the texture was not sticky, tacky, or difficult to apply.  I just literally rubbed it on like a regular moisturizer.

I used this before and during a few good running sessions, and it did not melt into my eyes, or rub off. I also took it when I went SCUBA diving, and I was diligent with reapplying, the way it felt like it absorbed into my face, I almost did not reapply at all. My skin was soft and smooth, like a nice moisturiser was applied, and I did not get any stinging sensation, white chalky face, or awful smell.  Nor did I break out at all, and I used it all over my body and face.

If Price would be of no concern, would you purchase this Sunscreen for yourself in the future?

Yes, YES, YES, and for my husband, and when she is older, my daughter.  I ADORE this product.

I give it 5 Stars.  This will be my new sunscreen.  For my face, and for my body. And for my family. You want the best protection for your family, and this is it. We are an outdoors orientated family, SCUBA, surfing, boating, as we live on the coast and take full advantage of it, and I will definitely buy this product when it comes out. And use it year round.  I will never use a different sunscreen.

Annie – Age:29,  Skin Type: Normal/Combination Skin

When I first saw this sunscreen, I think it has a very nice packaging, 85ml will last for awhile. *Dry Touch*. It’s described as a Dry Touch Lotion, but when I squeezed it out, it’s a creamy texture instead of lotion as described and I thought it was going to be quite thick and greasy on my skin. After I applied it onto my face, the sunscreen soaked in and left my skin feeling so soft and smooth. I love it, really lightweight.
I actually love the smell of it. I think its smell is the same as PERT shampoo which I love and have been using. Beautiful smell!!!
Before trying this product, I have been using a few different brands such as Hamilton, Lancome, Shiseido, Olay (moisturizer with SPF 30+)…
I think Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen Lotion SPF30+ is the best one. It’s great in both texture and fragrance. I have been using this sunscreen for 2 weeks, but so far so good, I don’t have any breakouts.

Comparing to other sunscreens that I have been using, this one comes with a reasonable price, I am more than happy to have it for myself when I finish this trial tube.
I would give this sunscreen 5 stars.

Anna – Age:29, Skin Type: Normal Skin

I liked the colours and feel of the packaging – and the scientific details of the  ingredients.  Plus it’s a small enough tube to slip into your handbag. I think it basically smelled like any sunscreen – they all have the same distinctive “milky” smell I think.  The texture is quite thick, although it’s easily squeezed from the tube.  I found it helps to warm the product with your fingers before application so it spreads more easily.  Also, I applied a mineral foundation straight after applying the sunscreen without any problems – I like that the sunscreen absorbed quickly without appearing to “sit” on top of the skin or leaving a whitish “cast” to the skin.

The main thing I like about this sunscreen compared to others I have used in the past is the fact that it absorbs so fast and wears well under makeup. I would absolutely buy it again – I think it’s a great product for everyday on the face.
I give it 4 Stars – just because I tested it during winter and I think I would need to see how it goes in summer before giving it a 5/5.  I love that it absorbs so quickly and the science behind the active ingredients is interesting.  I would definitely purchase this product.

Leila – Age:31, Skin Type: Combination Skin

Light, absorbs into the skin quickly, pleasant smell, makes my skin feel soft!
Packaging is small and compact. Easy to carry around in your handbag.
The sunscreen has a light pleasant fragrance, kind of like baby powder. The texture is very nice for a sunscreen.  It’s light and easily absorbed into the skin.  Once applied, it leaves your skin feeling soft.  It is very different to a normal sunscreen whereby you can feel the cream on your skin.  With the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer, it barely feels like you are wearing anything, let alone a sunscreen!  It feels very moisturising on the skin!

My skin feels so soft and ultra moisturised after applying the sunscreen.  I don’t feel the need to apply another cream on my face if I’m using this sunscreen as it adds moisture as well as protecting my skin from the sun. I will definitely be using this again.  At $17.99, what a real bargain! It is a moisturising cream as well as a sunscreen all in one. Where could you find anything better!
5 Stars

Rebecca – Age:31, Skin Type: Combination Skin

I like that it covers UVA and UVB rays and is non-shiny/dry-touch.
It went on quite thick, a little greasier than I expected initially, but seemed to sink in quite nicely.  I’m not sure about non-shiny as such though, maybe it is if you have dry skin.  A little more heavily scented than I would prefer.

It is lighter than the usual sunscreen I use, and the UVA/UVB is a drawcard. I would purchase it again. 4 Stars

Michelle – Age:38, Skin Type: Sensitive/Dry Skin

It was quite light textured which I liked and I liked the packaging shape and size.
I really liked the texture, it was light and absorbed easily. The scent was nice but not too strong.
I didn’t really notice any benefits from using this as opposed to other sunscreens but I have only had it for a week and it is the middle of winter.
I will definitely be looking out for this one when I need a new one.
4 Stars

Maureen – Age:39, Skin Type: Normal Skin

I’ve always found Neutrogena to be a good brand, so was happy that they had come up with a sun-screen, especially when I say that it was advertised as being dry touch. There’s no smell that I could find. When I first squeezed it out, I was a bit concerned as it seems so thick, almost like zinc cream, that I thought it couldn’t be well absorbed. But it was really easy apply and was absorbed straight away.

Once it had been applied, there was no greasy feel as it seemed to soak right in. This is a terrific bonus. Also, there was no ‘sun cream’ smell left behind. I used it on my face and arms at a BBQ where I was sitting in the sun all day, and didn’t tan at all. Other creams I’ve used in the past have to be reapplied so often to stay effective, but this one doesn’t. I wasn’t able to test the water resistance, as it is not warm enough for a swim yet, but this certainly delivers on everything else promised on the box.
I would buy this again. The only drawback is that because the hole in the tube is so small, you feel like you are applying a lot more than you actually are.
4.5 Stars

Nicolle – Age: 32, Skin Type:Normal/Combination

What were your first impressions of the Sunscreen?
It was packaged really nicely and very informative with the SPF 30+ in bold. I liked the Skin and Cancer foundation Australia endorsement. The size was also perfect as I keep it in my handbag and it’s not too big and not too small.
The texture was very good, thick enough to get enough on your hand and see what your doing but not too thick so it was hard to rub in. I LOVED the smell. It reminded me of Frangipani or some summer flower smell. I love my creams to smell nice, it also reminds me that I got it on my skin.

Did you notice any benefits from using this Sunscreen as opposed to others you have used in the past?
Yes I definitely noticed that I didn’t get sunburnt while outside, I noticed that there was no white residue left on my skin from the application which I get from other sunscreens. I felt that my skin could breathe too.

Out of five, what star rating would you give this Sunscreen based on your experience with it?
Probably about a 4, only because I would like something a little more creamier, But in saying that I was very happy with the product and I would defiantly buy it and recommend it.

Caroline

Liked the size and look of the tube. Had heard a lot about Neutrogena being particularly good so was looking forward to using it.

Lovely texture, squeezed easily from the tube and spread easily on my skin. Smell was light and pleasant. I am not quite convinced by the Dry-touch technology, as I found it remained sticky on my skin for quite a while. Eventually though it did soak in, and was also quite good under make-up on my face.
Unfortunately, I hate to say I didn’t find it very effective. I had the ability to test it out up at Hamilton Island for 10 days (in beautiful weather) and found I still burnt on my face, chest and shoulders when I was wearing it.
I wouldn’t purchase it for myself again as unfortunately it doesn’t matter to me how good it feels, it has to work as a sunscreen.

How to Achieve a Flawless Face

Who doesn’t want a youthful, flawless complexion and smooth skin? It is the holy grail of skincare and makeup products. As consumers we are all in search of that ‘one product’ that will make all the difference in smoothing out the wrinkles, evening out the skin tone, giving us a glowing complexion and at the same time looks completely natural. I would love to tell you that there is such a product but it’s just not that easy or simple. Many factors influence the way the foundation and makeup looks on the skin.

For example the skincare products you use on your skin may have a big part in the look of your makeup. Also your skin type can influence how the makeup sits on the skin. So bellow are a few suggestions to help you achieve a flawless face.

* For an even skin you need to exfoliate your skin. Foundation sits a lot better on skin that has been freshly exfoliated. Try these fantastic exfoliants:
(Click on the name of the product for more information)
Pelactiv Facial Refiner Deep Cleansing Scrub
Dr. LeWinn’s Facial Polishing Gel

* If you have dry skin make sure you use a moisturiser under your makeup. Choose a moisturiser that is not too oily rather, choose one that is hydrating. ” If you have oily skin, you too will have to use a moisturiser. Choose one that is oil free and mattifying for your skin.
*
Sodashi Sleek Moisturiser
Ultraceuticals – Ultra A Hydration Booster

* To cover any blemishes or dark circles around the eye, choose a concealer one or two shades lighter than your foundation. Gently tap your index finger over the concealer to blend it in with your foundation.

* Don’t be afraid to use enough foundation. A flawless face will only be achieved if you have an even amount of foundation all over the face and is blended well. Pay special attention to the nose and mouth area so as to cover any redness around this area.

* To get a really smooth coverage use a foundation sponge or if using a powder foundation invest in a good quality foundation brush. Take a leaf out of makeup artists around the globe. Not many use their fingers and that’s because it’s hard to apply even pressure over a larger area such as the cheeks and forehead. ” Be sure to blend the foundation almost to nothing around the edges of the face. Pay special attention to the jaw line as there is nothing worse than an obvious line around the face.

* As the finishing touch, apply a light dusting of powder. This will give your foundation the lasting power you require for all day coverage and will take away shine. A note of caution; make sure it is a light dusting of powder as too much can ruin your whole look by looking pasty and flowery.

* As the very last step, don’t forget your blusher. Nothing pulls the flawless complexion together more than a hint of colour on the cheeks.

Real Men Do Moisturise

Yes, real men do use moisturiser. These days they use their own moisturiser too. Gone are the days of sneaking a little of whatever the wife had in the bathroom, now days the boys require their own shelf in the bathroom cabinet.

And cosmetics companies know this too. That is the reason more and more are bringing masculine looking product ranges to the market. Do men need their own products? In many cases the answer is yes they do. Men’s skin is naturally thicker than women skin and generally it tends to be oilier as well. Added to this, men’s skin faces special challenges with the constant shaving. So a lot of the men’s product ranges contain special ingredients that help with this challenge. The products need to have healing and soothing qualities as well as antiseptic to deal with the small nicks and cuts acquired during shaving.

The shaving products need to have ingredients that not only protect the skin by lubricating it but also soften the beard to make shaving easier. So it is without a doubt that men face their own challenges when it comes to their grooming. Even though these products are targeted at men, it is a widely known fact that women are the ones who purchase the majority of these products for their men. Therefore, here are some of the latest products to help make your men the well kept gorgeous thing you’d like him to be!

Livia’s review:
My first impression of this mask when I opened the tube was how light the product appeared in texture. The mask was almost of a milky consistency. But as I was applying it to my skin I was surprised at how moist it actually felt on the skin.

The mask dried to a clear finish in about 10 minutes without going hard or stiff on the face.
The smell of this mask is very light, refreshing and a little bit herbal, but I quickly got used to it and it didn’t concern me while I had it on my face.

Once the mask was removed with warm water I was pleasantly surprised at how moist and soft my skin felt, a feeling that lasted well over the next day.

I feel confident in recommending this mask to anyone as it is for all skin types and will not disappoint. A great product to have in you cupboard especially in winter as the skin needs all the hydration it can get. I can’t fault this mask in any way.

Dina

What were your first impressions of the product?

A tube product suits me as it is easier to store in my cabinet and is easy to use. Labelling is excellent, so you know exactly what you are getting.

How did you find the application of it?

No need for digging fingers in creams and under you fingernails. I liked the squeeze tube for hygienic reasons. When applied to my face, if found that the product absorbed really well, and didn’t leave a greasy feeling at all. I use an SPF during the day, so I put this product on over that for day time, and at night when I went out and didn’t need an SPF I used the ‘Glow’ and found it fabulous as a make-up primer or just as a moisturiser with some bronzer.

How did you find the texture and smell of the product?

I loved the texture. It wasn’t runny, so in that respect it really did have a ‘balm’ feel to it, making it really easy to apply. And the smell was just divine – the smell of lavender and rose was very fresh, but not overpowering. My skin felt wonderfully soft and hydrated, and I noticed that my foundation (which I rarely wear) had longer staying power. I’m really enjoying this product. It will be a staple in my makeup cupboard. I just hope Natio don’t discontinue it. I used to use Clarins ‘Beauty Flash Balm’ but I think Natio ‘Glow’ suits me best. I’m converted! Definitely 5 stars. An excellent product.

Jasmine

What were your first impressions of the product?

The product I tried was the Salvador Blush colour. I loved the colour, and the packaging is fantastic, with two compartments for the loose shimmer power and cream highlighter, and also has a little mirror in the lid. It was like two products in one container.

How did you find the application and lasting ability of it?

It was really easy to apply, and is so versatile. The cream can be applied anywhere with fingers, and the shimmer powder has a miniature applicator to apply it with. I found its lasting ability to be great.

Did you notice any benefits from using the product?

The benefits from using this product are its highlighting abilities, particularly the cream. I used it anywhere where I wanted to highlight my skin. I would buy this product, in both colours. It’s great for summer to highlight skin, and the product would last a long time. I would give this product 5 out of 5 because it is so versatile and can be used anywhere.

This exfoliator was a pleasure to use. It is a very gentle, no nonsense product that is suitable for all skin types. The granules are very fine so they won’t damage the skin, but are enough to loosen the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. After use my skin was just glowing. The formulation of this scrub is quite creamy however I found that this made the granules more emollient and slippery on the skin adding to the gentleness of this face scrub. I feel this is an excellent product that is very well priced for everyday use.

Nichole – Age: 23

I found the application really good actually because the polish is a little thicker, which makes for a really neat application! Also because of its thickness, less than the size of a 5c coin is needed, which is really good for me because I tend to use a lot more with products like these. The smell is pretty similar to the creams that the company makes, like glycerine, which is ok because it gets washed off anyway. I found that it wasn’t very coarse on my skin which was good because I used it to clean my face after removing my makeup almost everyday.
5 Stars

Brigitta – Age: 25

I love products that do exactly as they say. This facial polish didn’t make any exaggerated claim, it didn’t try to dazzle me with weird ingredients, it just said that it will gently exfoliate and that is exactly what it did. It was so gentle that I could use it every day without any irritation. I liked the creamy texture as it was a little moisturising on my skin. The smell was very subtle, not too noticeable. I really liked it and would buy it again.
5 Stars

Joanne – Age:26

The granule is the finest and it feels wonderfully soft during application and the result is ‘smooth baby skin’. I love the texture; it contains creamier texture than your usual exfoliants, with lots of fine granules churned into the cream. It really is gentle enough to use everyday as it claims. It smells nice too! It’s likely that I will purchase this exfoliant, as I can use it everyday. I will use it on my body too.
4.5 Stars

Rebecca – Age: 23

I was impressed with the size of the tube and the amount of product you get for a reasonable price. Simple, no-nonsense packaging. This is quite a gritty scrub so I had to be gentle with the scrubbing action; it otherwise rinsed well and left my skin very soft and smooth. It was a perfect texture for a scrub; I don’t like scrubs that don’t feel like they are doing anything. This product is fragrance free so I had no problems with the scent.

I knew the QV brand to be a pharmacy brand and mild on skin. I like exfoliators, but find many to be too harsh so I was keen to try this. The exfoliating granules were suspended in a thick cream which I found took a little bit of rinsing off. However, I used the exfoliator for about two weeks every day or every second day and had no adverse reaction to it. The product has little to no smell. The exfoliating granules are very fine so it’s not too abrasive. I would be tempted to try the product again. It made no outlandish claims about what it could do for me, but it was an effective exfoliator which is all I would really expect.

I like many others have been a fan of OPI for a long time. Not only for their amazing range of colours but also for the wearability of the formulation. With a base coat, two coats of colour and a top coat I can wear these colours for a week without the need for a touch up.

I especially love the wide brushes that make the application so easy as it only takes a couple of brush strokes to apply the colour evenly and without any lumps or bumps. I look forward to seeing all the future colour collections and the quirky names for them.

Julie – Age:34

I had seen O.P.I. nail colours in a lot of nail technicians so I gathered it was a good quality and long wearing for professionals to be using it. I found the brush was a lot thicker than other nail colours I’ve used, but it was very effective at applying an even coat in three strokes. After just one coat the colour looked even and was non-transparent. I could have worn my nails with one coat only. Colour was long lasting and overall product is a world away from the terrible $2 nail polishes we sometimes try and get away with. When it comes to nail polishes you get what you pay for.

The colour I tried was a dark burgundy called Catherine the Grape. Not an overly Summery colour but will be beautiful to wear out on winter nights. The polish had very, very little fumes which is great. The colour was thick and lustrous. I would definitely buy this product again. I think you only really need about four nail colours all up. I’d rather have four good quality ones than 20 cheapies.

O.P.I is a trusted brand for its nail polish. Perfect colour for work. Clean, fresh beige-y pink for work. I’ve received compliment from it too! It glided on smoothly, I applied two coats and also added a top coat for wearability like I normally would in my routine. So far, I haven’t reapplied my nail colour for five days. Texture and consistency are above average, it gave my nails a smooth texture after application. It does not smell unpleasant. I would definitely purchase the same colour for work, and more colours in the collection.

Venitia – Age:22

The packaging is nice and functional. It looks like the rest of the OPI range. It was easy to apply and dried very quickly. I’m a bit clumsy and usually manage to smudge my nail polish before it dries, but this product dried very quickly. It did begin to chip off my fingernails slightly on the first day. I do have long nails and work at a computer all day, so that’s understandable. It didn’t seem to chip at all on my toenails. I received “Pink of Hearts”. It was a light baby pink colour. It is not a colour I would normally wear, as I prefer a more natural shade. It didn’t have an overpowering nail polish scent and the texture made application a breeze. I would not purchase this colour again, but I would certainly purchase other OPI nail polishes.

I was pleased to get an O.P.I. Nail polish as they have a great reputation. I also really liked the colour for a nude tone so was keen to try it. Plus the names for the colours are great fun. I was concerned with the colour (‘I Only Drink Champagne’) that one application would not give good coverage for a nude tone. But I found that once dry, the coverage was good and, if it was for everyday wear, one coat would be sufficient. Of course two coats just finished it off nicely and would be great for day or night wear.

The application was nice and smooth. It wasn’t ‘gluggy’ as some nail polishes can be. I found it dried pretty quickly without having to use quick dry sprays etc. Even with one coat I found the wearability very good – no chipping in the first 24hrs! But by the 3rd day there was quite a bit worn away. With two coats I found that it didn’t wear away as quickly. I found the texture to be nice and silky upon application with no clumps. The smell was not overpowering as some nail polishes can be.

I have always wanted to try these but was never certain they would be worth the money. I have been missing out. Not only are the colours great (I got Vodka&Caviar) but they have a huge variety of them. The brush is quite wide so you get a very good coverage in one stroke. The texture is very smooth and even, so I only needed one coat for an even look but I applied two coats just out of habit and it looked even more fantastic. I am in love with these nail colours.

Bourjois La Creme des Levres

Description: Moisturise and add beautiful shine to your lips in one sweep, with this two in one delectable, light reflecting and enhancing lip cream. The search for an elegant lip gloss that moisturises your lips like a lip balm can end. The formula’s creamy texture brings together rich creaminess and airy lightness.

How good is a product that does more than one thing? This gloss not only gives the lips shine, it also moisturises and softens the skin. The colours are quite sheer and easy to wear.

The texture is smooth and creamy and will generally last for a couple of hours on the lips. I enjoyed wearing this lip gloss very much and in a market that is saturated by lip glosses it is nice to see a gloss that is also moisturising as well as beautifying.

Joanne – Age:26

Very feminine, lady-like packaging and easy to carry. It comes in a squeeze tube, very easy to apply and it’s not sticky. Very creamy and rich that I don’t need to squeeze a lot out of the tube. It was also very durable. Rose is the colour I’ve got. It’s not like a blood red colour or a Barbie doll pink, which goes perfect with my Asian skin colour. It’s VERY creamy and colourful. I could see different shades of red/pink/rose from the reflection of the gloss. It doesn’t have that artificial glossy smell like many of the lip glosses have. It smells like food and could last for hours. It’s just like a lip butter/conditioner and has a very smooth texture.

Venitia – Age:23

The application of this gloss was a bit tricky as the product tended to move to the outside of my lips rather than cover them evenly. The feel was nice; although my hair would often get stuck in it which I don’t normally have trouble with other lip glosses. I received 02 Rose. On the lips it is a sheer beige-gold with a fine gold shimmer. It is a very subtle look, good for paring with bold eyes or for work. Unfortunately it comes off very easily so you have to keep reapplying it throughout the day. The texture was nice and smooth without being sticky. The smell was slightly artificial, it sort of reminds me of grape sherbet, but it is only noticeable when applying. 3.5 Stars. If it was less likely to get my hair stuck in it all the time and had more wearability I’d certainly get it again.

Julie – Age:34

I am familiar with Bourjois products but haven’t really used any of them apart from a lipstick. I like lip glosses and creams because I get dry lips in hot or cold weather. This gloss was easy to put on although this sort of applicator can sometimes result in the gloss being too thick and it’s hard to get a neat edge. I found this to be the case. I prefer a wand applicator for lip creams and glosses. Although I like subtle lip colours, especially for glosses and creams, I found this colour (04 Rose fondant) to be a little too subtle. I may as well have had Vaseline on. It had a pleasant smell and rich texture which is good for dry lips.

Danielle – Age:25

I must admit I thought it looked a bit boring for no particular reason. But I did like that the packaging was long and slim-line – great for in my handbag! It was easy to apply – one of those squeeze’n'glide applicator types – that way allowing as little or as much of the product applied. Once on it felt really nice. It didn’t feel like it was going to come off too easily and it felt quite moisturising on. I didn’t like the colour for a gloss at all in the packaging (Brun). It was a lot darker in the tube than when applied. I found when applying the gloss though that the colour would come out in ‘bursts’ – so all of a sudden a heap of brown would come out and then I would have to spread it over my lips. That was a bit annoying. Otherwise the colour when on was a nice tint with a glossy shine. The texture was smooth and just made my lips feel full of moisture. There wasn’t much of a fragrance.

Rebecca – Age:25

Cute tube, with applicator tip. This gloss comes out of a nozzle in the applicator, which I found a little unhygienic, so I squeezed it out onto my finger first. I received the Rose Moelleux colour. This was slightly too corally-peach for my complexion, it was however, a pretty colour and I can imagine it would be a great nude lip for some girls. The texture was quite smooth and not sticky. It smelt a bit “lip-balmy”.unsure how to describe it, it wasn’t unpleasant but I thought it might be better with a fruitier scent or not scent at all.

How did you find the application of it?

The application was extremely easy with the sponge.

How did you find the colour of the product?

The colour was very nice and rather shimmery. It does make the face glow. I really like it for using at night. The texture was very light and the smell was lovely.

Amanda

What were your first impressions of the product?

I was very excited to try this as I had been thinking of buying a new illuminator. I mainly used this to highlight certain parts of my face over foundation or on its own.

How did you find the application of it?

The pump pack was very easy to use and it didn’t dispense too much which was good as I didn’t waste any. Also the clear tube means you know when you are getting low so you can purchase a replacement. I found the lotion went on very smoothly and mixed well with liquid foundations for a subtle shimmer.

How did you find the colour of the product?

I found this colour VERY subtle – the first few times I almost couldn’t tell I had put it on even though I have quite pale skin.

How did you find the texture and smell of the product?

The texture was light and creamy and I didn’t really notice any scent when I used it. I love the idea of this product so I will give it a 3 star rating, the packaging was great and the application was fool proof but they need a variety of shades to suit all skin types.

Description: This innovative formula delivers lash-loving conditioning, thanks to allantoin, candellia wax and beeswax. A double shot of black pigment sets the stage for intense dramatic eyes. Bent wand applicator acts as a built-in lash curler while giving good contour and control over unruly lashes.

Suzanne

What were your first impressions of the product?

I was pretty interested in using this as it looked really interesting – I had never considered an angled wand.

How did you find the application of it?

It is probably no fault of the product that the applicator (me) was very “unco”. I have spent days looking like a panda! And more time removing excess than applying.

Did you notice any benefits from using the product?

No benefits to me personally in using this product, apart from my niece loves me as I have given it to her. I found it ran very easily and smudged quite a bit. It took a while to dry.

Readers of The Beauty Review will know that I love oils so it was with definite eagerness that I received this Ayurvedic formulation. The smell of it is very earthy and the colour is quite yellow but that disappears as soon as the product is absorbed. A little definitely goes a long way and one pump of the product was enough for my whole face as well as my neck and decolletage.

I noticed my skin was glowing in the morning after use. Also I started using it on my husband’s face as he has a scar on his forehead from a sunspot removal which is quite red and flaky sometimes. Since using this oil at night, the redness has just about disappeared and the texture of the skin has evened out and the flakiness is gone. He will definitely be using this oil in the future.

Ildiko – Age:55

I’m using this oil for a couple of week now and I love it. First of all I love that earthy fragrance of it. The direction says use it at night but I use it even during the day. It is really nourishing my skin and found it is not dry anymore. It makes it supple and my skin absorbs it very quickly. Very little amount is needed at a time, so it is very economic. I had some insect bites on my forearm and the marks of it did not want to go away. So I applied some of this oil, within a few days the marks started to fade away. I would give this product 5 stars. It is a brilliant product.

Nichole – Age:22

My first impression of this oil was; very natural, earthy looking and kind of exotic. It made me interested in trying ayurvedic products in the future because of the different approach that is taken to skin care. The pump is pretty easy to use when you tilt the bottle a little and aim for your palm! The product feels really nice, smooth and light on the skin, very nurturing and takes about half an hour to absorb fully. The smell is pleasant, because of the combination of the essential oils that have been used. The texture of the oil is very light and doesn’t leave a greasy residue on your fingers/hands. I can see a difference in the condition of my skin just from using it for a few weeks- it really is a ‘skin food’. I really like the product as well because it doesn’t have any synthetic preservatives and ingredients like that.

Brigitta – Age:25

I love natural products so I was so excited to try this oil. Initially I thought this is the type of product would be used in a spa. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. I loved it from the very first drop. I’ve never used an oil on my face for the evening, I usually use creams. The pump bottle makes it so easy to apply and you only need the tiniest amount to cover your whole face and neck. I adored the smell too. The texture of the oil was so smooth; it felt like velvet on my skin. After a week of use my skin just glows. I will definitely be using this again and I’m converted to oils. A definite 5 Stars.

Venitia – Age:22

It looked like many other organic/healing/natural type products on the market. The idea of all the natural ingredients and it being handmade in Australia appealed to me. I found that the pump delivered wayyy too much product with each depression. I almost dripped it all over my top the first time I used it. It says that the orange colour should disperse as it is absorbed into the skin, but I found it left a yellowy, oily look on my skin. I definitely wouldn’t put it on just before going out somewhere (and the directions say it is designed for use at night). It stayed very oily on my skin. The texture again was oily and shiny. The product smelt strongly of rosehip oil and essential oils. The smell was a little overpowering for me, but a little goes a long way.
2 Stars

Danielle – Age:25

I really liked the look of it as it gave the impression of a day spa! I couldn’t wait to take the lid off and smell it either! It was not what I expected at all! The bottle said to put 4-5 drops on your face but the bottle was actually a pump action so, I originally went with 4 pumps which was MORE than enough! It was so oily; it was a little hard to control!! Also, being an oil, it was quite hard to get off your hands. On my face (obviously with a little too much on!) it appeared orange (like it said it would) for a while but even when I went to sleep I felt that my skin was still too oily and that it would ruin my pillow! After that first mishap – I just went with one pump and that was plenty for my face! It did feel quite nice on after all! I liked the smell; it was very relaxing (although I am not sure I would want to smell it all the time). The texture was just too oily – although the following morning my skin did feel nice – I just didn’t feel comfortable going to bed with my face feeling oily. I give it 2 Stars and that is mainly for the fact the bottle says to use drops but was packaged in a pump action bottle.

What were your first impressions of the product?

I have previously used Estee Lauder makeup in the past, so I had high expectations of the product. It is a simple eye pencil that can be sharpened.

How did you find the application and lasting ability of it?

I found that I had to apply pressure to get the colour to show. Once I eventually got some colour on my eye lid, it was fairly long-lasting.

How did you find the smell and texture of the product?

There was no discernable smell to the eye pencil. I didn’t find the texture creamy at all and it didn’t live up to its shade name ‘Softsmudge Black’ .

Rituals of Beauty

What is your unique beauty regime? Our daily beauty routines can become a time of connection to ourselves. We look at how Ayurveda the ancient system of healing can benefit our own personal sense of self in the modern day madness.

Our Sensory Journey Whenever I run Ayurvedic Beauty workshops, I ask people to close their eyes and connect with their skin. How does it feel? How do they feel about their skin? What are the qualities (cold, hot, dry, oily, rough, smooth etc). Our skin connects us to the physical world; it gives us our sense of touch and defines the boundary of who we are.

How we feel in our skin drives many aspects of our sense of wellbeing. Ayurvedic beauty differs little in its philosophy from the overall healing science that is Ayurvedic Medicine. Our skin is a doorway that allows the medicinal qualities of herbs and plants to be absorbed into the internal tissues. These therapeutic oils are working at a molecular level to deliver healing properties to our cellular systems.

Ayurvedic Rituals or sadhana’s (spiritual practices) are the daily practices and routines used to harmonise and maintain balance within our lives. In the case of our beauty regimes, we can harmonise by connecting to ourselves at the start and end of the day. It’s a time to give soul nourishment to ourselves.

Bringing awareness to our rituals heightens our connection with self, bringing about a greater sense of wellbeing. We can however slap on our oils, creams and potions whilst thinking about what we didn’t get done today or being upset about something or somebody. We can easily miss the opportunity to connect with ourselves and turn it into yet another task to be completed. Turning our beauty regime into a sacred time for being within oneself can become a precious and enlivening aspect of daily life that nourishes not only on the outside but the inside.

Tips for Tuning In

Everybody has one or two dominant senses. Mine is smell. I love the smell of essential oils, coffee, grass, wind etc. I also love sound. So for me to become more aware during my beauty routine, I smell and breathe deeply. I also tend to talk, hum or chant.

Other people are touch orientated so they focus on tactile sensations, connecting with their own sensitivity through the joy of touch.

In all cases, finding a way to “remember to breath” is important. Breath can stop a busy mind and opens a doorway to connecting with ourselves.

* Take a deep breath … actually take 3 deep breaths

* Smell the products – your skin care products will always be more effective if you connect with the smell of them as it stimulates the nervous systems and “activates” our cellular intelligence. If your nose doesn’t agree with the smell – consider finding a product that you do enjoy smelling

* Touch with feeling – be conscious of how you touch your skin; explore different methods of touching that make you feel good. Ayurvedic beauty books have fabulous “natural face lift” massages.

* Speech – tell yourself something positive and truthful about yourself; hum a tune or chant a mantra. Alternatively, give off a good belly laugh

* Look – Imagine you are somebody else looking at you. Imagine how others see you. See your inherent beauty.

The Greatest Beauty Secret of All

As Audrey Hepburn put it, “If you wish to be truly beautiful – be generous, kind and giving”. So take time to make your beauty regime a ritual of beauty and giving to yourself.

Natural Glow – Is it Just About a Tan?

August 15, 2009 by admin

Even though we are constantly being told about protecting our skin from the sun, it became glaringly obvious to me the other week that the message is not getting through. My husband and I decided to go and watch the finals of the beach volleyball championships. So dutifully I applied extra strong sunscreen all over my body, used my mineral makeup on my face that has its own sun protection and donned my long sleeved light cotton blouse and wide brimmed hat.

Shockingly in a crowd of a few hundred spectators, I was one of a few women who had a hat on (mine was the biggest) and I had to have been one of the less tanned ones in that crowd. Even more shockingly, most of the women instead of looking for shade, decided that this would be a great time to work on their tans. Sadly most of these women looked as if this was not the first time they worked on their tans.

Which brings the question to mind: Why are we willing to sacrifice our health and in some cases our lives, in order to be tanned?

The latest medical research may just give us a clue. Tanning can be addictive. Ultra Violet light encourages the release of endorphins in the brain that creates a feeling of wellness, happiness and euphoria. In a study done by Researchers at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Centre, frequent tanners who’d been given endorphin blockers recorded withdrawal symptoms – namely nausea, dizziness, and the shakes.

Therefore to keep this feeling of wellness and happiness, women would sunbake at every opportunity and when the weather wouldn’t permit it, would hit the tanning salons. All we have to do to confirm this is look at the number of tanning places that are springing up all over the place. Even the local little beauty salon is offering tanning bed sessions with beauty treatments.

Tanning beds are no better than tanning in the sun. In fact they can be worse. “Tanning lamps emit four times more damaging UVA rays than the sun,” explains dermatologist Dr. Jody A. Levine.

What’s more, your risk of melanoma (the most deadly skin cancer) increases 75 percent if you tan indoors before age 35.” So with all this evidence around us it is vital that we are not only consciously aware of it but apply it practically.

We need to realise that a tan is no longer a sign of healthy skin! A tan is no longer sexy!

A tan is not something to be desired! If you don’t believe me, just look through the pictures of all the celebrities on the red carpet. It is very rare these days that you will see a tanned celebrity. Instead you will see natural coloured, glowing skin. And if there is a hint of colour, it came from a bottle. That is what all of us must aim for. Natural, glowing skin. The true sign of health, vitality and well being. And that doesn’t come from hours in the sun!

Over-Blown Lips are Out of Vogue

August 15, 2009 by admin

Lip enhancement is in, enlargement is out. Recently released findings from a new survey* on lip aesthetics reveal that only two per cent of Australians associate ‘big’ as the most important attribute when it comes to beautiful lips.

“Australian women are finally moving away from the ‘bigger is better’ approach, wanting a more tailored, softer look from their treatment,” says Australian Plastic Surgeon Dr Steven Liew.

Dr. Liew notes that the recent Australian aesthetics lip survey results closely mirror emerging global trends in lip enhancement procedures, with a growing majority of women understanding that proportion to the face and customisation are of paramount importance for perfect lip results.

“Lips should be sexy, sensual and seductive and most importantly, in proportion to a woman’s face. Very few women suit the large, pouty lips that we have seen in the past – at home and abroad. A tailored, more natural look invariably looks more attractive,” he says.

Sydney-based Dr Liew recently returned from Europe’s most prestigious cosmetic surgery conference, the International Master Course on Ageing Skin (IMCAS), where he was an expert panel member on lip aesthetics along with experts from France, Britain and the U.S.

According to Dr Liew, major highlights from IMCAS include:

* There is an increasing demand for lip augmentation globally and locally;

* Australians are matching European trends for a more tailored, softer style of lip, with a focus on enhancing rather than exaggerating;

* The panel of experts from around the globe agreed that the perfect HA dermal filler (i.e. an injectable gel made from naturally occurring complex sugar called Hyaluronic Acid) to use on the lips must be able to move fluidly with movement of the lips (i.e. be pliable), and be safe, smooth and soft;

* In Europe, lip enhancement treatments using HA dermal fillers have become fashionable fixes with women requesting specific styles that are regarded as in vogue. Lip styles such as the defined, subtle ‘Paris Lip’ and the fuller yet conservative ‘London Lip’ are more natural and sculptured compared to the recent trends of over-blown lips, seen in the U.S, and in particular Hollywood.

Dr Liew recently revealed the ‘Sydney Lip’. The ‘Sydney Lip’ depicts the proportionate enhancement of the lip to the current concepts of facial beauty, and specifically suits the needs of Australian women. Unlike European countries, the Australian climate can lend to greater dehydration and premature ageing and loss of volume of the lips. Dr Liew’s sculptured Sydney Lip provides a naturally full and rejuvenated appearance, well defined borders and Cupid’s Bow. It is a lip style that is beautifully tailored, inviting and attractive, fresh and sensuous. In short it is JUICY for its hydrated appearance.

The Sydney Lip is also soft to touch. The lip aesthetics survey conducted by Newspoll found that two out of three Australians most associate natural looking and feeling lips with beautiful lips; more so than the lip size, symmetry or volume alone.

“Lips are a very tactile part of the body, so it’s important for them to not only look attractive but feel attractive too. Dermal fillers allow physicians to refine, sculpt and enhance a person’s lips however, it is important to ensure the chosen dermal filler has a soft texture to create a more natural feel,” says Dr Liew.

“The filler I choose has to be proven to be safe, soft and smooth, such as Juvaderm, in order to create a set of lips that are perfectly enhanced, and look and feel natural. It’s important that neither the patient nor their partner can see or feel the products. My goal is to create an effect which I believe is the epitome of any perfectly performed cosmetic enhancement – that is, ‘everyone will notice but nobody will know’.”

Other survey highlights include:

* Maybe mother does know best! The percentage of people who felt natural looking and natural feeling are the most important attributes associated with beautiful lips increased with age (61 per cent of people aged 18-34, vs. 76 per cent of people aged 35-64)

* Friends, partners and beauty editors are the most influential – in their decision to have a lip enhancement treatment using a dermal filler, women aged between 18 and 34 years old would be most influenced by a friend or family member who has had a treatment (16 per cent), followed by their partner (11 per cent) and beauty / fashion magazines (10 per cent). In fact, these sources play more of an influential role than their doctor or GP (8 per cent) or cosmetic physician / plastic surgeon (5 per cent).

* One in three Australian women aged 18-34 years would consider a dermal filler to enhance their lips if they knew the results would be natural looking and feeling. “At home and abroad, there is a gradual shift in focus from women deciding to have a treatment, to deciding what style of treatment they want,” says Dr Liew. “There is greater appreciation and understanding of how dermal fillers can enhance the lips to make them look their best in a desirable natural-looking manner.”

About Dr Steven Liew As a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Dr Liew is one of Australia’s most respected and accredited plastic surgeons. Trained internationally in all range of cosmetic surgery, he maintains a keen interest in the area of breast and face. In addition to consulting patients at Shape Clinic & mediSpa in Darlinghurst (www.shapeclinic.com.au), he also holds the position of consultant plastic surgeon in St Vincent’s General and the St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney.

Overall Star Rating:

I loved the overall look and the packaging of this mascara. From the box to the tube it feels luxurious and the formulation doesn’t disappoint either. It has a gel like texture that just glides on to the lashes and coats them individually. The colour is a deep black that appears glossy on the lashes and stays soft.

It is also easy to remove at the end of the day. You simply wet the lashes, apply gentle pressure and they just slide off. What I loved most was the no-panda eyes. There is absolutely no smudging or smearing, no transfer and no leftover mascara after removal.
This is a fabulous everyday mascara that lenghtens and builds the lashes well and provides good length. I thoroughly enjoyed the use, wear and the feel of the mascara on the lashes. Highly recommended.

Joanne – Age:26

I was thrilled and confident about the product as I’ve seen many beauty awards it received in magazines. Love the glamorous packaging – the pouch, diamond-shaped silver tube. The diamond-shaped brush wrapped every lash in an instant. It adds volume and defines in one quick sweep. I only needed one to two coats to give me the colour I like; unlike other products that make you feel like you needed to apply numerous coats to achieve fuller lashes.
I particularly adore the gel-like texture, feels soft when applied on lashes; even better when I removed it because my lashes did not fall out at all! I will definitely buy this clever product over and over again, it created pretty, full lashes, and because I can remove the mascara easily with warm water, it’s already saving me money on the eye makeup remover.

Brigitta – Age:25

What can I say! The mascara looked so elegant in it’s celvet pouch and silver casing, I felt glamorous just using it. I loved the fact that it’s free of all the nasties especially as I’m using it around my eyes. The first thing I noticed when I applied it was how smooth it felt going on. Than even when it dried my lashes stayed so soft. I guess that’s from the beeswax in the formulation. It gave me lovely long lashes and stayed put all day long. I especially loved the fact that I could just wash it off at the end of the day.I don’t have anything bad to say about this mascara, I really like using it and will probably continue to do so.

Rebecca – Age:24

This mascara came in a cute packaging with an opulent looking tube and velvet pouch. The mascara just glides on, no clumps at all!! Smooth texture that glides on without pulling on the lashes. I could even layer it several times without clumps forming. The brush has a nice shape and the density of the bristles helps coat each lash. There was no smell at all. The colour was a true black and did not look grey at all.
4.5 Stars

Venitia – Age:22

The packaging of this mascara is individual and appealing. The application was easy and my eyelashes didn’t go hard afterwards. They did however tend to clump together rather than look separated and defined. The colour was pure black and I found I only needed one coat to get total coverage. The texture was smooth. The product had a slightly chemical smell to it, but only while applying. I would give it a 3.5 Stars. It smudged a bit throughout the day and didn’t give me quite the volume and separation I was after.

Julie – Age:34

The mascara was nicely packaged and looked like a quality product. The label promised ‘no more panda eyes’, which I thought was interesting since I usually have them by day’s end. It also said the mascara would last for 24 hours, although I had no idea why anyone would want that? The applicator wand was really great with brushes that effectively separated each lash.
The colour was black which is my usual colour. The formula was definitely not gluggy or too runny like some mascaras. I found that the mascara didn’t smudge or fall off my lashes like some do, however I like a mascara that makes my lashes look thicker. This product said it would do that, but I didn’t think it beefed up my lashes like others do. Although it’s a really nice product I probably wouldn’t buy it again.
3.5 Stars

Keeping Up Appearances

1: Update Your Makeup

This is the perfect time to update your makeup and your application skills. Make an appointment for a makeover and ask lots of questions. This is important because not only do makeup trends change but your skin changes over time too, so a professional makeup artist can asses your individual needs and teach you the best way to emphasise your best features.

2: Brighten Up Your Colours
While the nude naturals have their place in the makeup arsenal, this season sees the return of bright, vibrant colour. Try something new that you never dared to wear before. Do not be afraid of colour but experiment and find the ones most flattering for your own colourings. Nothing gives you a more flattering, radiant look than a sweep of blusher. Peach and pink tones suit most complexions and give you a delightful glow.

3: Highlight the Eyes
Eye makeup application is the most sought after skill among women. Little wonder as the skilful application of eye makeup is capable of transforming the whole face. Choose contrasting colours to your eye colour to accentuate the eyes. Apply the darker colour into the socket bone area and use the lighter shades above the lash line and under the brow to define the shape of your eyes. Don’t forget the mascara. Nothing opens up the eyes more than lashings of black lengthening mascara.

4: Get An Eyelash Curler
If you don’t already use an eyelash curler, this is the year to start. The converts will tell you, there exists no other product or tool that will make as much difference in your look as an eyelash curler. This one product alone will open up your eyes like nothing else and you will be hooked just like the rest of us.

5: Shape Your Brows
The eyebrows frame the face. It is important to have the right shape of brows that will compliment not only the shape of your eyes but also your face. If you are uncertain about doing your own brows especially if you’re an eyebrow shaping virgin, see a professional to give you tips and determine the best shape for you. Then you can maintain the shape at home yourself.

6: Treat Yourself to Facials
Facials at a quality salon are not just for the rich and pampered. Facials every six to eight weeks will give you not only a skin check up by a qualified therapist but also will determine if you are using the correct products for your particular skin concerns. Facials generally include a facial massage that is not only relaxing but has many benefits for the skin and are hard to do for yourself at home. Facial massage increases the circulation in the skin which helps the skin receive needed blood and nutrients helping the skin appear healthier and aids in the tissue repair. It also assists the movement of lymph fluid which in turn helps to get rid of accumulated toxins. All in all facials are a wonderful treat that everyone should indulge in.

7: Tan Only Inside
If you like the tanned look make sure you get it from a bottle only. Lying on the beach getting burned is a thing of the past or at least it should be. There are excellent products that give the skin a very natural glow and the formulations are improving constantly. If you are unsure about applying self tans or afraid of having tidemarks on your skin try the gradual self tanners that will slowly over time build into a deeper tan allowing you to correct any mistakes. These also give the skin a nice golden glow rather than the dreaded orange tinge.

8: Block Out the Sun
If you haven’t already made sunscreen a regular part of your skin care routine than you must do so this year. The suns rays are not only burning your skin but also aging it. The best anti-aging treatment for your skin is a full spectrum sun screen that is applied to the skin every day. Whether it is sunny or overcast your sunscreen must be applied as the UVA and UVB rays penetrate the clouds. Choose a sunscreen that has a physical block in it or reapply the sunscreen regularly.

9: Invest In the Best
There is a time to be thrifty and a time to splurge. Make sure you splurge on the beauty essentials that will make your makeup look a million dollars and you will see why this is an important investment. It’s worth spending your money on the basics such as a great makeup primer, foundation, concealer, makeup brush and moisturiser. Than you can save on the rest if you chose to because the basics will make them look fabulous anyway.

10: Find Your Own Cult Products
Everyone is always searching for that elusive must have product that they can’t live without. Have you found yours? Make this year, a year to discover what products are best for you, what works best for you and that style works best for you. Once you have found your own cult basics you can relax into the fun of choosing and trying the not so essential items.

Mineral Makeup Is Here To Stay

July 14, 2009 by admin

You know a product is not just a phase when one company after another is releasing their own version of the same. It seems mineral makeup is here to stay! And with good reason. Mineral makeup is a fantastic product to use if you know how to use it correctly. And with so much focus on it, companies are developing newer and better product to appeal to everyone.

Is it Good for You?

Mineral makeup is just as the name suggests made from minerals. These are naturally occurring minerals and inorganic pigments from the earth (Metal ores and iron oxides) that are very finely crushed and milled. They don’t contain potential irritants such as oils, preservatives, fragrance, talc, chemical dyes and are safe for even very sensitive skins or people suffering from acne and rosacea.

In fact, they are so safe that a lot of Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists are recommending them to their patients. Not only is Mineral makeup not harmful for the skin, it is actually good for it. The ingredients are so finely milled that they will not clog your pores and because it is made from inorganic minerals it will not gather moisture to feed bacteria therefore it is totally pure. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, helping to calm and soothe irritated skin.

Another benefit of mineral makeup is its high content of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, two physical sunscreens that block the sun’s rays from penetrating the skin.
Depending on the amount of these two ingredients in the formulation is the SPF factor of your foundation.

Are They All the Same?

At first glance they might appear the same! However just as with traditional makeup, there are ingredients of differing price. The cheaper brands will have a lot higher concentrations of the cheaper ingredients in the formulations.
Currently there aren’t any regulations about what can be classed as a mineral makeup. Therefore any formulations containing minerals as the core ingredient can be called as such, even if the rest of the product is made up of less desirable ingredients.
For this reason it is imperative that you check the ingredients listing of the product and do your homework about ingredients.
One ingredient that has caused some concern especially for people with acne is Bismuth Oxychloride. This ingredient can be a “potential irritant” when it comes in contact with the skin so those with acne or sensitive skin may want to use a foundation free from this ingredient such as Jane Iredale.

Is it Just Powder Makeup?

Mineral makeup has come a long way from just drab loose powder foundations, although it is still the most popular form of applying the makeup. Here are our favourites:

(Click on product for more info)

Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Mineral Powder Foundation SPF 20 $65.00

Youngblood Natural Mineral Foundation $67.50 + Ultimate Foundation Brush $57.00

id Bare Minerals Foundation $79.00

Pur Minerals4-in-1 Mineral Foundation $44.50 + Chisel Brush $39.50

If you prefer the feel and application of cream or liquid foundations, we have that for you too:

Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals $86.00

Bloom Sheer Mineral Tint SPF 15 $48.00

Youngblood Pressed Mineral Foundation $74.95

Also most mineral makeup companies have the full gamut of colour products as well to suit all your makeup needs from Bronzers, Blushers, Lipsticks and Lip Glosses you will find all your favourite colours.

Pur Minerals Marble Powder $34.50

Jane Iredale So-Bronze 2, $79.00

ELES™ Micro-Bubble Lipstick $37.50

Eles Cosmetics LipTox, $63.95

Common Ingredients In Mineral Makeup

Titanium Dioxide
This is a naturally occurring white mineral that is a fantastic sunscreen. It is the second most highly reflective mineral. (the first is DIAMOND) Therefore it not only acts a physical sunscreen but also helps minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Zinc Oxide
This is again a natural sunscreen giving you a broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. But more than that it is also used for its wide range of colours. This mineral allows foundations to be different shades, and is also used in Eye shadows and Blushes.
Iron Oxide
This is a very opaque pigment used for colouring cosmetics.
Kaolin Clay
Used for it’s oil absorbing qualities.
Dimethicone
Made from silica that is a combination of minerals but largely comprised of quartz. Dimethicone aids spreading, is transfer resistant and imparts a remarkable smoothness and creaminess to the overall product. It also improves coverage without adding heaviness. It is non-comedogenic and highly water repellent.
Mica
Is found in nature in a variety of colours and can be used to add shine and sparkle to cosmetics.
Bismuth Oxychloride
An inorganic white pigment, and usually comes in two forms: diamond and pearl finishes. The diamond is shimmery and the pearl is more matte. It gives the makeup a silky feel, good slip and good adhesion, which helps it stay on your skin.

The Five-Minute Fix for Winter Weary Skin

July 14, 2009 by admin

Cold weather is definitely a challenging time for skin. Wind, cold and indoor heat suck the moisture from the skin, which can make it look dull, sallow and dry. Here are four quick and simple tricks to help you look your best even in the long cold winter months, especially if you are getting ready to attend an important event, going to a function or just socialising with friends:
(Click on product for more info)

1. Revive your skin with Mirenesse Power Lift MD Line Corrector Day Concentrate $69.50. A concentrated serum with Peptide GF6 complex provides instant and continual benefits to correct and refine deep facial lines and wrinkles and revitalize tired skin. Follow with Christian Dior Capture R60/80 XP Wrinkle Restoring Crème, $167.00 which contains a cocktail of potent ingredients to smooth out wrinkles and stimulate the skin.
Makeup can accentuate dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles, so be sure to use cream on your skin especially on dry patches and around your eyes before applying makeup.

2. Focus on the eyes. Green tea bags are fantastic for a quick pick-me-up for the eyes. After you’ve finished drinking your tea, store the used tea bags in a Ziploc or airtight container in the fridge.  Before a party or a night out, place a couple of teabags over your eyes for five minutes. The cold and caffeine will help soothe and de-puff your eyes, and the green tea antioxidants will help keep your eye area looking young.  On a daily basis use Jan Marini Transformation Eye Cream $88.00 which targets the thinner, more age-prone eye area to dramatically lessen the visible signs of aging. Alternatively try the new Alpha-H, is the Age Delay Intensive Eye & Lip Treatment Cream $69.95. Alpha-H utilises natural Flower Acids found in crushed Hibiscus Petals to gently resurface the skin contour; minimising the appearance of crow’s feet and hyper-pigmentation whilst promoting cell renewal to give the skin a more lustrous, youthful appearance.

3. Still focusing on the eyes, a must use product for tired dull eyes is Mirenesse Idol Eye Lift Anti Age Mineral Youth Eye Palette $69.95. Designed to instantly create a more youthful look. A brightening concealer and 4 lifting eye shadows infused with anti-ageing Renovage. A 2 in 1 product, with all the benefits of an eye cream and eye shadows in 1 product. Another must to use is mascara; lashings of it. Try two of our absolute favourites to brighten up any eye: Bloom Full and Flirty Waterproof Fake Lash Mascara $30.00 and L’Oreal Paris Extra-Volume Collagene $26.95

4. For an instant glow, try Clarins Instant Light Complexion Perfector $50.00
Wear alone or under your makeup for flawless radiance, or use to highlight specific features such as the cheekbones. Be sure to moisturize first, or else it will end up highlighting the flaky skin.
Or try Yves Saint Laurent TOP SECRETS Flash Radiance Skincare Brush $88.00, it combines the benefits of skin care with the precision of a professional application to give the skin instant freshness and radiance. A cocktail of energizing grains of Paradise and caffeine stimulate the skin and erase signs of fatigue. Sweet orange flavonoids regulate the skin’s pigmentation to combat a dull complexion.

Using these products through winter will banish all signs of dull, sallow, tired skin and gets you ready to face whatever comes your way. Wether that is a work function, party or just lunch with the girls, you will be glowing with health and sunshine.

Enjoy and have fun!

Size: 50g
Price: $90.00
Availability: Myer, David Jones and Clinique Centres
Overall Star Rating:

I have been using this moisturiser ever since it was released so I was interested to see how other people will find it. Having powerful anti-oxidants in your moisturiser is a huge bonus (see article) that you will not notice immediately but will have long term benefits to the skin. All our panellists agreed that the moisturiser is soft and smooth on the skin and does moisturise very effectively. The smell was noticed by some but it is not an offensive odour and does dissipate rapidly. Personally I love this moisturiser as it does make my skin feel beautifully soft and velvety. As it has no SPF in the product, it can be used at night or under your regular sunscreen.

AMANDA – Age: 23

I was very interested in the product as I have been keen to try some products with antioxidants and I was excited about the strengthening abilities. I also love the luminous packaging! I only needed a small amount of this cream to cover my face and neck which is great as it means the tube would last me a few months. The cream absorbed very quickly in to my skin and didn’t just sit on the surface of my skin like some other creams do. I was really impressed that it came in a tube as I don’t like putting my fingers into a pot of cream as it’s not hygienic. This product has virtually no fragrance which I imagine would be fantastic for sensitive or reactive skin types. This cream did moisturise my skin and made the pores seem finer but I didn’t notice any drastic results. I was expecting my skin to glow with all the ingredients it contains but it didn’t. Although I did like this cream I didn’t find it any better than my current moisturiser so I would not buy this cream. I would give this product 3 stars as I found the packaging was very informative and easy to understand, the product was easy to use and the product was nice on the skin. 4.5 Stars

AOVANA – Age: 30

The packaging looks very professional and appealing. And lots of info in the box accompanying the tube, so that was a bonus to read about the product. The size is really good too and I can easily put it in my handbag. The application is very easy and the product went on smoothly. No white streaks and felt creamy on the skin initially. Then after 10mins, it dries up and feels really soft on the skin. The initial smell of the cream was not very pleasant for me, (smells a bit chemical.) After 10mins though the smell dissipates quite a lot which was good. I noticed that my face was well moisturised and felt smooth and soft on the skin even after a long day. 4 Stars

SUSANNE – Age: 44

I have never been a huge fan of Clinique products but this is quite a nice one. It comes in a very standard clinical looking tube. The cream is very light and fresh – a little gives quite good coverage. I have slightly oily skin but it absorbed nicely with no greasiness. Even though it claims to be fragrance free, it still has a very clinical sterile smell when you first apply it. It is not an unpleasant smell, but it is there all the same. No miracles unfortunately, still had the oily t-zone by lunch time but I did not notice any other negatives. It is an ok product but I prefer to use products with an SPF – I am extremely conscious of sun protection. I think there are much better products available and also prefer organic products. 3.5 Stars

MELINDA – Age: 35

I wondered how different this moisturiser was from the others in the Clinique range, but I was eager to see how much it hydrated my skin. The moisturiser was very silky smooth to apply and it was easy to apply my foundation over it. It had a nice gentle scent. I’ve enjoyed using this moisturiser very much. I really think it has improved the smoothness and overall look of my skin. I didn’t think this moisturiser was really outstanding in any way. I think you could get a moisturiser just as good if not better, for a cheaper price. 3 Stars

JACKIE – Age: 37

I was interested to try this as I used to use Clinique products when I was in my 20′s. The moisturiser was very easy to apply, it absorbed quickly with no oily residue. Although it was fragrance free every time I applied it I thought I could smell menthol so perhaps it contains some. I found that my skin was very soft and smooth but after using it for about 8 days I found that I had very flaky, peeling skin on my forehead and around my mouth.2 days after going back to my regular moisturizer the problem was gone. 2 Stars

Firstly, let me say a big thank you to LanaB for introducing us to this beautiful product. Personally I loved it from the minute I saw it. The simple glass packaging, the gentle fragrance and the smooth easy application of the lip balm made for a very pleasant experience. I am a lipstick/gloss/balm wearer since the age of 12 and have to have something on my lips at all times otherwise I start licking my lips which makes them chap.

This balm soothed, moisturised and nourished my lips superbly so much so that I could actually go without anything on my lips for a couple hours after the balm has worn off. The biggest plus for me was the lack of taste of the balm on my lips. There is nothing worse than having a nice lip product that tastes foul on your lips. Overall this is an excellent product that is well formulated, containing good, nourishing ingredients that do exactly what they are supposed to do. I can highly recommend this product for anyone..

JASMINE – Age:19

I was very impressed by this product. It has attractive, yet simple packaging, and has a fantastic raspberry smell. I thought the little pot it comes in was handy to take anywhere without any mess. It applied really well. It is easy to apply with a little bit going a long way, and has a great lasting ability. As soon as I started using it my lips started feeling much softer, and felt nicer each time I applied it. The texture was very smooth making the lip balm easy to apply. I would definitely purchase this product in the future, its great and the jar will last a long time as it hold quite a sufficient amount. I would give this lip balm 5 out of 5, I loved using it.  5 Stars

AILEEN – Age: 22

Although I’m a big user of lip balm, I haven’t tried many organic lip products in the past, so I was looking forward to applying something natural on my lips! The lip balm comes in a glass pot and is white in colour, but goes on clear. I found that the application of the lip balm worked best when I rubbed my finger in the pot to warm up the balm so I could get a decent sized application on my lips. The texture was smooth and balm-like, rather than having an overly greasy or slippery feel. This felt like my lips were being conditioned. I loved the smell of the lip balm, mainly since I am a fan of anything raspberry-flavoured, but also because it wasn’t too over-powering or artificially-smelling. I will definitely buy this again; my lips felt moisturised, I loved the scent and using an organic product is a big plus! 4.5 Stars

AMY – Age: 36

Cute small glass jar with screw cap which easily fits into the smallest of purses. Application was easy; I only need the tiniest amount. My lips were more hydrated and less chapped from using it during the day, so I tried applying it before bed time nightly as well and found that it kept my lips soothed and moisturized in my sleep too! The texture looked slightly dry when I first opened the jar, but the heat from my finger melted the balm without any problems. I received the Raspberry flavour and it only has a hint of the fragrance (which smells like real raspberries, not the overpowering or sickly artificial smell). 4 Stars

FRANSICA – Age: 25

I thought the product has a minimalist look to it, which appeals to me. It comes in a heavy small glass jar with black plastic top. It definitely feels solid to hold and the ribbon included with product description was a cute personal touch. Given that this product comes in a tub, you’d have to use your finger to apply. Some might find this unhygienic/messy, but I don’t have a problem with it. It moisturised and protected my lips well. The product was quite waxy in texture and hard for a lip balm, which I find quite surprising given the amount of oils included in it. So much so that I had to use my nails sometimes to scrape the product out and apply it to my lips. However, this balm might soften in warmer weather, making application easier. The fragrance/flavour I received was watermelon. To be honest, it smelt a bit artificial, but not that strong that it becomes offensive. I would give it 4 stars.

DINA – Age: 38

The packaging is pretty simple, but that didn’t bother me. It’s what is inside the packaging that counts. Delicious smell. When I first opened it I loved the smell – yummy watermelon. Colour of the balm is an inoffensive white, and the jar is small enough for my handbag. I also love that it is has no petrochemicals or mineral oils as an ingredient. At first I found it a little difficult to rub the balm onto the pad of my index finger because it was quite hard and needed to be a bit softer. Also, my nail was a bit long and the balm ended up under my fingernail.

But, I managed to apply it quite well – and a little goes a long way, and for that reason I can see this balm lasting quite a while. My lips felt moisturised immediately. My lips didn’t feel sticky at all. They had just had the right amount of balm to moisturise my dry lips. I also used this product every night before I went to bed after my cleansing routine, and found my dry lips improved within a week. It’s a shame you cannot buy it in stores, making it a bit more accessible. I give it 3 stars – took off 2 due to not being able to purchase in stores.

Overall Star Rating:

I had the pleasure of trialling two lip balms for this issue of the magazine so as you can imagine I now have the softest, most well moisturised lips ever. One of the biggest plusses of this lip balm is the SPF factor in it. As we know, it is vital to protect the lips as they don’t tan, only burn. Therefore this is an excellent product for the outdoors, when you may not wish to have much colour on your lips. This balm gives lips just a hint of pink. And it has a gorgeous strawberry scent to it too. The balm lasts well on the lips and is easily applied without any greasiness. Lovely product to use.

Melinda – Age 35

I don’t often wear lip balms so I was excited to try this and see how effective it was. I found this product nice and thick which I liked. It was easy to carry around so that you could reapply whenever you wanted. I felt my lips were protected from the sun and they felt very moist. As far as the smell; ‘Delicious’ were the first words to come out of my daughter’s mouth when she tried this. Of course we didn’t eat it, but the strawberry flavour balm was divine. It smelt absolutely beautiful. I would absolutely purchase this again! This product is definitely a must to keep with your sunscreen and other things for the beach. It is perfect to put on your children as it contains a SPF16. This lip balm is cheap enough to have one in your handbag and one in your beach bag. 5 Stars

Suzanne – Age 44

First impression – yummy smell and nice application – I actually blotted off excess when using a lipstick and used it as a base which worked well. My lips felt nicely moisturised and it lasted well. My 11 year old daughter loved this so has been sharing the product with me. I will certainly purchase this product again. 5 Stars

Aovana – Age 30

The packaging is rather cute and a lovely bright pink colour on the outside. It is very tempting to want to try it. The application felt creamy and slightly resistant to put on. I had to apply a few coats to make sure I had enough on. I definitely noticed my lips weren’t cracking even when I was thirsty or exercising outdoors. The texture is rather creamy which is good for me and the smell is a lovely strawberry scent. I also like the taste of it. It is very tempting to lick the lips. And it does give a slight pink tinge to the colour of my lips. Very likely I will buy it again and I give it 4 Stars.

Jackie – Age 37

My first impression was nice easy packaging, very bright looking. The balm glided across my lips and was not sticky at all. Nice smooth texture but I found the strawberry smell to a bit too much. It also has a very light colour to it. I found that this balm was very long lasting; I used it when bike riding and when I stopped after 2 hours my lips where still soft and protected. Great that it contains SPF. I would buy this again but not in the strawberry flavour, it’s a great product for its price. 4 Stars

Amanda – Age 23

I love that this product is a wind up stick as apposed to a pot. The bright pink packaging makes it stand out especially in my overflowing handbag! I found this lip balm moisturised and smoothed my lips as it promised and I did use it at the beach so I found the SPF worked against the elements. At first I found the smell gorgeous but after a while it was a bit overpowering and I found the texture was a bit waxy and not very smooth on my lips. I wouldn’t purchase this particular Blistex Lip Balm again but I love the original Blistex pot and I buy that all the time so I would stick to that. I would give this product a 3 Star rating for the SPF content and the packaging.

Overall Star Rating:

Although I mainly use roll on deodorants because I find them less irritating, this anti-perspirant deodorant was an excellent product. Achieving everything it claimed to do, that is: Control wetness all day through without leaving any white marks on your skin or clothes. The gentle fragrance was remarked on by the panellists as it makes it easy to wear with your favourite perfume without it clashing. An excellent product.

Elizabeth – Age 39

I was very impressed with this product. It went on with no white residue left to go on my clothes and it performs all day long. The smell is fantastic, as it has a very fine fragrance, thus you can wear your perfume and not have it clash with your deodorant. I will definitely be purchasing this again. 5 Stars

Kym – Age 37

I was very excited to use this especially as I work out at the gym often. It has a very sporty appearance so it would attract my eye on the shelf. The application of it is very cool and refreshing, didn’t sting after shaving, dried immediately and left absolutely no white marks as others do!!! Apart from the obvious, no sweating, nice fragrance, I did not have to think about it when I was going to put my deodorant on, eg; after I got dressed, because there wasn’t the “white mark” issue to worry about. I would definitely purchase this product for myself, I thought it was great. Definitely a 5 out of 5 Stars for this one. Top marks for achieving what it sets out to achieve.

Ildiko – Age 55

I have very sensitive skin so I was interested in trying this product. I am happy to report that it didn’t irritate my skin at all and best of all it didn’t leave any annoying white marks on the skin. The fragrance is very soft, not overwhelming at all, in fact it is quite fresh.
4 Stars

Linda – Age 53

I thought this is very much like all the other deodorants, not a lot different although it didn’t leave a white residue which was good. The smell was very nice; very clean smelling, kind of crisp. I have sensitive skin sometimes so I found this product very good. I always buy for sensitive skin. I would rate this 3 Stars.

Buff Your Body Smooth – From Head to Toe

As we shed our winter clothes and get ready to strut our stuff at the beach in beautiful but revealing summer dresses, shorts and bikinis one of the most important things we can do to make sure we look fabulous is to have smooth, supple, well moisturised skin. In order to achieve this exfoliation is crucial. Why and how?

Why? Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells that are on the surface of the skin. As our skin is continuously producing new skin cells at the lowest levels of the skin (dermis), these cells push the older ones towards the surface of the skin (epidermis). When these cells reach the surface they are naturally supposed to detach and fall off.

The problem arrises as we get older and this whole process starts to slow down. Instead of the dead skin cells falling off naturally, they pile up on top of each other, causing the skin to appear dry, flaky, rough and dull. Even worse, they can block the pores causing pimples and milia and they can block and slow down the absorption of serums and moisturisers applied to the skin. Exfoliation promotes even skin tone, younger, fresher looking skin and prevent blockages and breakouts.

How?
There are two ways to exfoliate:
1) Mechanically. The dead skin cells on the surface of the skin are physically removed with an abrasive product. These may include small, round or abrasive ingredients such as; salt, sugar, crushed almond halls, jojoba beads, ground coffee or any number of things that will rub the skin.

Face:
1. Clarins One Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser. Combining cleansing with exfoloation
2. Stem Organics Smooth Skin Exfoliant. Organic goodness that moisturises the skin while exfoliating.
3. Lancome Exfoliance Clarte – Fresh Exfoliating Clarifying Gel. Providing cool freshness to the skin.

Body:
4. Yes To Carrots C the Body Moisturising Body Scrub. Combining Beta-Carotene (anti-oxidant) with Dead Sea Mud and Water and essential oils.
5. Crabtree & Evelyn India Hicks Island Living Spider Lily Body Polish. The ultimate pampering product with a sensual fragrance.
6. Premium Spa Frangipani & Coconut Sugar Body Scrub. Utilising cane sugar with coconut oil to evoke tropical spa experience.

2) Chemically. Enzymes, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAS) loosen the glue-like substance that holds the cells together, allowing them to slough away. Facial peels are a form of chemical exfoliation. They can either be very gentle or very powerful, depending on the strength of the active ingredient in the product.

Living Nature Manuka Honey Vitalising Exfoliant, $50.00, 50ml. A mask to detoxify and exfoliate while you relax for 15-20 minutes.
Clinique Clarifying Lotion. Gently wipe over skin once with cotton wool to exfoliate.

Tips: It is very easy to get carried away when exfoliating. Remember less is more. You are dealing with delicate skin and you only want to remove the very outer layer of the skin. Removing too much may cause irritated, sensitive and dry skin, the opposite of what you want to achieve. Never use body scrubs on your face as they are too rough for the delicate facial skin.

The Secret To Making Your Eyes Pop

July 14, 2009 by admin

Eyeliner can make or break your eye makeup.

It is what shoes do to your outfit. They either pull together the look and compliment the colours or completely spoil the look. Yet few makeup items cause as much panic and consternation amongst women as the humble eyeliner. There are a couple of reasons for this. One; many are unsure how to apply the eyeliner correctly. Two; there is a huge variety of eyeliner styles and colours, so which do you choose? In this article we will address both concerns to help you make the most of your eye lining skills and help make your eyes pop!

Applying The Eyeliner

As very few of us have rock steady hands it is best to rest your elbows on a solid surface and apply your liner looking down into a mirror. This will naturally stretch your eyelids so you don’t have to pull on them so much. Position the eye liner as close to your lash-line as possible from the inner corner of the eye. Once again as very few of us have such steady hands to draw one single straight line along the lash-line, it is best to feather your strokes. What that means is drawing short strokes along the lashes, than having a break. This way you will avoid the dreaded wobbles and you can judge your progress. Follow the curvature of the lid all the way to the outer corner in this manner. To start with, it is best to keep the line as thin as possible and if a thicker line is required simply go over the already existing line either all the way or simply from the middle of the eye for a simple stylish look.

To get that sexy 50′s cat-eye effect, when you reach the outer edges of the lash-line, angle the eye line slightly upwards and extend the line a few millimetres creating a wing effect. Than you build the line until you have the desired effect. This is a very flattering look for most as it visually lifts the eyes.

Most women are terrified of the liquid eyeliner because they think it is messy and difficult to control. However, nothing creates more drama that a bold line. Here is a foolproof tip for those of you who would like to give the liquids a go.

The secret is in the tip of your liquid liner brush tip. With a very light hand, gently dot the very tip of your liquid liner brush along the lash line, then go back and join the dots together. Keep going over the line in short strokes until you have the desired look, then let the line dry for a few seconds.

I’m not a big fan of lining the lower lashes, however if you are going to do it, only line the outer two-thirds of the eye. Never ever line all the way across the lower lashes as this will only close up the eyes, giving you a bracketed in <> look that is not only very severe but also very dated.

Applying eyeliner to the inner rim of the eye is strongly discouraged for two reasons. One; the eye is a moist area and the eyeliner will start to smudge within a couple of hours at the most, creating a very unattractive panda eye effect. Two; introducing foreign substances (colour pigments, wax) to the very delicate eye area will irritate the eye and may cause inflammation and other problems.

With all eyeliner application a little patience and plenty of practice is required. If you are unsure or haven’t practiced before, don’t leave it to the last minute before an important event as it will only make you more nervous and bound to cause mistakes.

Choosing The Right Eyeliner.

There are several different eyeliner types. Experiment to find the right one for you or use a variety of eye liners for different effects and occasions.

The Pencils: The eye pencil is probably the most popular eye liner due to its versatility and ease to use. Start with a light hand and build on the colour. It is also a great way to get the smudged smoky look.

1. Model Co colourbox eyeliner in Black with sharpener $24.00
2. Shiseido ‘The Makeup’ Eyeliner pencil duo in Desert Dusk $35.00
3. Bourjois Eye Pencil $16

The Creams and Gels: The latest things on the market. Cream to powder eyeliners are long lasting, most are smudge proof and they are applied with a fine brush. Very versatile liners as you can easily vary the thickness of the line.

1. Jane Iredale Cream to Powder Eye Liner $54.00
2. Napoleon China Doll Eyeliner $30.00
3. Clinique Cream Eyeliner $37.00

The Liquids: The most challenging eyeliner but the most glamorous too once you have mastered the technique. Can be used on it’s own with mascara or over the top of eye shadow. The longest wearing eyeliner.

1. Yves Saint Laurent Easy Liner for Eyes $55.00
2. L’Oreal Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Liner $21.50
3. Shiseido ‘The Makeup’ Fine Eyeliner in Black $53.00

Choosing the Colour

The most popular and safe colours are Black, Brown and Gray. Eyeliner is designed to give intensity to the lashes, make them appear thicker and emphasize the eye. However coming into summer a lot of bright colours are popping up at all cosmetics counters. Don’t be afraid to experiment with these colours. A good guide is to choose a colour slightly darker than the eye shadow you will be wearing. Or pick a funky bright colour and wear it by itself or with a nude eye shadow making your liner the main focus. With patience and plenty of practice you will master the art of eyeliner to help you make your eyes Pop wherever you go.

Anti-Oxidants, The True Anti-Aging Ingredient

July 14, 2009 by admin

There is a lot of excitement about anti-oxidants both in the scientific community and in the cosmetics industry. Continuing research is being carried out about this potentially ‘fountain of youth’ ingredient. Anti-oxidants are being heralded as the answer to all your anti-aging needs. So with all this optimism surrounding this component in so many of our cosmetics products, it is important for us to have a better understanding of what anti-oxidants are, how they work and are they really the fountain of youth we have been searching for?

First of all, anti-oxidants can be found all around us in nature and in the foods we eat. Fish oils, nuts, wheat germ, brown rice, fruits, all citrus fruits, mangos, kiwi, and strawberries; green vegetables such as green peppers, cabbage, spinach and broccoli amongst many others are a rich source of anti-oxidants.

Anti-oxidants are vital in stopping and even reversing free-radical damage in the body and the skin.

What is a free-radical? You will be pleased to know that it’s not some freedom fighter in a sci-fi movie. Rather free-radicals are oxygen molecules in our body that have lost one of their two electrons. As they must have two of these electrons, the oxygen molecule must go and find one, which usually means it will steal one from it’s fellow oxygen molecule. This poor molecule now has to go and find one for itself too, creating a chain reaction of molecules looking for electrons therefore they are called free-radicals. While they are engaged in this war for electrons, they are creating considerable damage called Free-radical damage. The simplest way of describing this damage is what happens to an apple when it has been cut. The flesh goes brown – oxidises or rusts. This is free-radical damage. There are several reasons this happens. Stress, alcohol, smoking, sunlight and pollution all contribute to free-radical damage.

And the way we stop it, is with anti-oxidants. These prevent the oxygen molecules that have lost one of their electrons to steel one back from another oxygen molecule, therefore arresting the free-radical molecule in its tracks before it can do much damage.

This is where it gets really interesting for us. Wrinkles and sun damaged skin is the result of free-radical damage. So if anti-oxidants can stop this damage and even reverse it, all we need to do is lather ourselves in anti-oxidants and we’ll all look like twenty year olds again. Not so fast.

Unfortunately not all is known and understood about this seemingly miracle ingredient and exactly how it works. Studies are being undertaken to determine the effects of topical applications of anti-oxidants in creams and lotions and also the quantities of active ingredients required to make a difference to the skin.

Also it is important to note that free-radical damage is continuos. Sometimes it can go on for years before you might notice any damage to the skin (eg: skin cancer). Therefore it would be unreasonable to expect to apply an anti-oxidant rich moisturiser or lotion and see results in a few weeks. It is a protection that we need to apply continuously to combat the ongoing damage to our skin.

Scientists believe that if we can slow the effects of free-radical damage it is best done by anti-oxidants. So it is up to us to get as much anti-oxidants in our body as possible, both from our diet and also our skincare. We have always been told to eat our fresh fruit and vegies, now there is an extra reason to do this. It’s good for your skin.

Some excellent anti oxidant products on the market:

1. Mario Badescu Honey Moisturiser $65.00
2. Jurlique Herbal Recovery Gel $70.00
3. Dr LeWinns Triple Action Day Defense $89.95
4. Jan Marini Skin Research Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant – Now with PhytoMelanin SPF 30, $76.00
