Livia’s Summary: Simply a joy to use such a high quality product. The serum is light on the skin and is absorbed in a matter of a minute. As a beauty editor I get to try a lot of products and I have to say that I am addicted to this serum. Within a week of using it my skin has visibly brightened and the texture was improved. My fine broken capillaries have just about disappeared after 5 weeks of use. I didn’t even need to use a moisturiser over the top of the serum; it hydrated my skin so much. I applied it all over my face including my eyes and the lines have definitely improved. I would recommend this serum for anyone to try. Skin Type: Dry combination, dehydrated skin.
Value for Money: Yes I would buy this again as it’s important to put something on your face at night and this has all natural ingredients.
Comments: This serum goes on smoothly and makes your face feel clean. Your face looks quite shiny when you put it on, but it doesn’t take too long to absorb and isn’t greasy to touch, as long as you don’t put too much on at first.
![]()
Skin Type: Combination Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: Excellent value, Fantastic product.
Comments: I’m not sure if it’s the serum or the cleanser or the combination of both, but I used these 2 products exclusively since I got them and my skin has improved enormously in regard to minimising unsightly red blotches on both sides of my face from prior sun-damage. It has had a similar effect to Bio-Oil but much better. I am thrilled with this product and would love to be an ongoing user of it.

Skin Type: Normal Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: I would definitely buy this product. I had been intending to purchase a night serum from a famous cosmetics brand at 4 times the price, but I am so happy with this one I will buy this one instead.
Comments: I thought, as with the Cleansing Lotion, that this would be quite oily, but it turned out to be a surprisingly light fluid consistency. A single pump was sufficient for the whole face, so it will go a long way. And it was so hydrating! The serum helped soothe some dry patches I had around my nose. And I liked that it came in a dark glass bottle, so that the active ingredients are protected from photo degradation. Upon application, the product felt a bit tacky and sticky on my skin, but after about 2 minutes it absorbed really well, and my nighttime moisturiser went on very smoothly over the top.

Skin Type: Dry Combination Skin.
Value for Money: Very good value, I will definitely get it again.
Comments: The texture of this serum was very smooth, slightly sticky on the face but I didn’t mind that. The fragrance was very pleasant and the appearance of my skin in the morning looks revitalised.
![]()
Skin Type:Extremely Sensitive, Dry Skin.
Value for Money: Great value for a fantastic product and it’s very economical to use.
Comments: What a fantastic product. It makes my skin wonderfully soft and it’s not greasy at all. My skin just drank it in. The fragrance is very pleasant, slightly herbal. As I have extremely sensitive skin it was lovely to find a product range that had absolutely no irritating ingredients in them and my skin reacted very well to them. In fact I get many comments from people about how smooth my skin looks. I recommend it to all my patients.
Pros: Chemical Free, Gentle cleanser.
Cons: None.

Value for Money: Yes, I would definitely buy this cleanser again.
Comments: The first thing you notice when you use this product is the beautiful smell of Rosehip Oil, Green Tea & Lemon Myrtle. It’s not overpowering at all. Rather, it has a refreshing & clean feel to it. I loved the idea of once you have massaged it into your face, you don’t rinse off with water. Instead, you just wipe off with cotton balls. The fresh smell stays with you & once you follow with the toner & moisturiser, your face feels fantastic.

Skin Type: Normal Dehydrated Skin.
Value for Money: This is in a small bottle, but you only need a small amount, so it will last for ages. I would definitely buy this again.
Comments: I was concerned this cleanser might leave my skin oily, considering all the butters and oils in it, but after applying it to my face and wiping off with a cotton pad, it left my face nice and soft and definitely non-greasy. In the morning, I applied the cleanser, then removed with toner, and this definitely got rid of any trace oils left behind, but at night I simply wiped off with a damp cotton pad and it sank in overnight. And it smelt just divine.

Skin Type: Combination Oily T Zone.
Value for Money: I loved it but it is a bit pricey for me, a stay at home mum with 2 kids. Would buy it maybe once a year as a special treat for myself.
Comments: A great pick me up for the body and I loved it. It made my skin feel very fresh and clean. I loved the smell and texture of it, as it was not harsh at all. Would definitely recommend this Body Scrub.
![]()
Skin Type: Combination Sensitive Skin.
Value for Money: Expensive compared to the one I currently use at approx. $15.
Comments: Very nice product in that it is less abrasive than my regular, cheaper product. It is effective without scratching so I prefer it for sensitive areas like my dcolletage. Also, very nice packaging and fragrance.
![]()
Skin Type: Oily Skin.
Value for Money: Usually I would not spend $48 on a body scrub, but I will keep this product in mind, as a once in a while splurge.
Comments: The Dermalogica body scrub has a thick creamy texture, which I love. It exfoliates the skin deeply, yet still is gentle on the skin. I found my skin a lot smoother after using this product. I also like the fact that it is in a tube, which makes it a lot easier when using it in the shower. Also, it has a lovely light lavender scent.
![]()
Skin Type: Slightly Oily Skin.
Value for Money: I think its a bit pricey, there being lots of good scrubs a lot cheaper on the market. I probably would not purchase this myself.
Comments: I loved this product. The smell is divine and coming out of winter with crocodile skin, this is a lovely refreshing product that got rid of all the dryness. The scrub is exfoliating without being too harsh. My skin felt lovely and soft after using the product during my shower. I would love someone to give me this as a gift, as it is quite expensive for me.
![]()
Skin Type:Combination Skin.
Value for Money: It’s quite a pricey product and although it does exfoliate, it does not moisturise unlike similar products that can do both.
Comments: The Body Scrub does slough off dead cells, however, the texture is not unlike wet sand and a moisturiser is still needed afterwards. It’s supposedly scented with lavender, orange and sandalwood but my nose can only pick up a vague eucalyptus undertone.
Pros: Small exfoliating granules, suitable for sensitive skins.
Cons: May be too expensive for some.

A Breath of Fresh Air – What is Oxygen Therapy
October 20, 2007 by admin

You might have heard a lot about oxygen facials in the media lately. It has certainly become the new buzz word in the industry. With celebrities such as Madonna, Heather Locklear, Donatella Versace and Gwen Stefani endorsing it and Madonna is even reported to have a machine in her home, there is certainly a lot of interest in this treatment.
So what is Oxygen Therapy and how does it work? We all need oxygen. We are surrounded by it. We breathe it in. Oxygen is the ultimate life support ingredient, helping cells to survive, reproduce and regenerate. Oxygen is also a healing agent, a provider of energy and it guards against unfriendly bacteria and disease. Science has shown us that our skin cells are the last to receive the oxygen we breathe in.
Also as we age the delivery of oxygen to the skin cells slows down which in turn slows down the cell regeneration. This causes the skin to become thinner and wrinkles and brown spots can start to appear. The skin can also have a general ‘dulling’. Oxygen Therapy combats these symptoms by delivering a concentrated stream of oxygen directly to the skin, followed by an oxygen rich skin cream or serum.
According to Intraceuticals, an Australian company who developed the treatment along with a skincare range to go with it, the Oxygen facial is gentle, relaxing and soothing and is suitable for all skin types.
The facial promises to deliver skin that looks and feels years younger, is nourished and hydrated and the skin renewal is stimulated. The company also claims that your fine lines and blemishes virtually disappear in just a one 30 minute treatment. An increase in the levels of oxygen in the skin helps to enhance the skin cells’ metabolic health, enhances new cell growth and the functioning of the blood vessels in the skin. The resulting increase in blood flow improves the body’s ability to metabolise, absorb and utilise vitamins, minerals, proteins and other nutrients.
Oxygen also stimulates collagen production and the production of elastin fibres, all in all contributing to healthier, younger looking skin! The procedure involves six weekly treatments followed by monthly facials, costing $140-200 each.

If however you are a busy girl constantly on the go Tali by Tali Shine has developed the first Oxygen Therapy in a bottle. This fantastic little product is great if you are flying or generally spend a lot of time in air-conditioning which is extremely dehydrating for the skin. This product was created by using technology developed by NASA scientists. It is a 100% natural, non toxic, chemical free and pH balanced skin rejuvenating facial spray containing high levels of bio-available oxygen dissolved in highly filtered water.
At first this spray has a mild chlorine-like scent. But it is not unpleasant. The smell is due to the use of Atlantic sea salt in the manufacturing process. And if they put a fragrance in the product to mask the smell, this would have destabilised the oxygen. So we prefer the original smell. After having used the spray regularly I have noticed a definite brightening of my skin and it is an excellent product to keep with you at all times to re-hydrate your skin instantly. It is available from David Jones stores and selected pharmacies for $49.95.
Paying the Price for Clean Hair

“How did Cleopatra keep her hair so shiny and clean?” was my off-beat, dozy thought as my sleepy eyes watched Elizabeth Taylor strut her stuff in the Mediterranean heat. Fair question? Cleopatra (or even Liz Taylor) would not have been able to walk into a store full of exotic, colourful and extraordinarily vast numbers of shampoos as we can these days, but maybe she was the lucky one.
With promises of more bounce, less frizz, colour balancing, ph balancing, fortifying, clarifying, nourishing, organic, orgasmic (!) and all this in one range, let alone 542 other ranges just like it, choosing what is essentially just a hair cleaner has never been a more complex or confusing task. Should we be taking notice of the amazing promises, the fancy titles and the colourful bottles?
Well there’s one undeniable fact about shampoos that should be foremost in our decision making – they are all created to clean the hair – end of story. Shampoo is no more than a watered-down soap, which strips the oil that protects the hair because that oil (sebum) collects dirt and grease.
Unfortunately, however, the vast majority of them strip more than just oil. More on that later. But who cares! Hair is dead matter anyway.
True. But just like the broken branch of a tree, it can be made to look a lot worse than it needs to. The good news is that the same broken branch can also look quite good if it is protected, managed and even spruced up with a bit of colour.
Maybe Cleopatra had the key with what was likely a brew of oils, fragrances and vinegar? A brief look at shampoo history will soon reveal its evils, and hopefully the solution.
Until WWI, home-made soap was the preferred method of cleaning the hair. It was during the war that the Germans ran out of oil to make soap, so they developed synthetic detergents known as surfactants. The mother of them all, sulphate, was found to be incredibly effective as well as extremely cheap to produce. However, it wasn’t until WWII that these detergents started to be made into household products such as floor cleaners, dishwashing liquids, soaps and of course, shampoos.
The companies that created these must have thought they had struck gold. So cheap to make yet so effective – a licence to print money! Then suddenly, terms like “dermatitis”, “excessive dandruff”, “itchy scalp” started becoming part of the vernacular. Could baldness also be on the increase? I’ll leave that to the statisticians. Maybe foam, froth and bubble aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. The truth is there is no such thing as a completely safe, natural or organic shampoo. Cleansing must produce some stripping which isn’t completely safe.
Foaming and cleansing, such as what takes place when shampooing, does not occur naturally. And since it isn’t a natural phenomenon, then there is no way it can be organic. The best we can hope for is “most safe, whilst still being effective”. Forget all the hoo-hah about shampoo for grey’s, blondes, dry, oily, pink, callithumpian etc.
If you don’t believe me, check the ingredients on the back. You’ll find that most of them are exactly the same throughout – it’s just good old-fashioned marketing.
And around 99% of them contain our old friend “sulphate”. So how do you decide what is “most safe”? Well, since shampooing is about cleansing, which is not a perfectly safe act anyway, the key is working out what to avoid. The first no-no must be sulphate. Remember, it is only included because it foams up the best and is the cheapest – it makes a lot of companies a lot of money. You’ve probably noticed that most shampoos keep foaming even after it has well and truly done its cleaning job.
We are led to believe that all this froth is working for us and that the shampoo must be working well. It is masked with synthetic conditioners which give you the illusion that your hair is soft and healthy. What is really happening is that it is continually stripping the hair, slowly dissolving it so that anyone with shoulder-length hair often has thin, split ends with much thicker roots. Meanwhile it is drying the scalp as well as damaging the skin. When was the last time you checked out your hairdresser’s hands?
Shampoos should only froth until they have completed their cleansing, then turn into a milky water.
For more information and a well balanced view regarding the dangers of sulphate, visit
www.aubrey-organics.com/about/articles/shampoo.cfm.
Other nasties such as parabens and propylene glycol should also be avoided. This doesn’t leave many options as virtually everything in a salon or hairdressing supply store contains sulphates. What about the health stores? Nearly all of these products are free of sulphates and other nasties, but are generally quite weak and ineffective. They usually claim organic, which they cannot legally do, or they claim “organic ingredients”. All that is happening here is that they throw in a couple of organic extracts, usually less than 1%, that do nothing for the hair in order to be able to make the organic claim.
Again – it’s all marketing. And if these products were effective enough, wouldn’t the salons be selling them? This doesn’t leave many options, but there are a couple that have “crossed over” from health to salon grade. In Australia, I have only found 3 that satisfy the “safe yet effective” standard. Mastey Sulfate-Free Shampoo has been around for a while. It is American and generally retails around $17 for 225 ml. It is a little expensive and has the tendency to go gluggy after a while.
Edge Sulphate-Free Shampoo is an Australian Made product that has been around for a short time. It retails around $13 for 250 ml. It has a nice fragrance and is effective as long you use a little more than you would a normal shampoo. One of the most exciting releases is the Karpati Natural Hair Care Sulphate-Free Shampoo which came on the market in September 2006. It retails at around $18 for 500 ml, is fragrance free and Australian Made (endorsed by Eva Karpati – “beautician to the stars” in Sydney). Whether these would have met Cleopatra’s satisfaction, however, we will never know. What we do know is that there will be more shampoos and more choice as the years go on. I hope that this article has helped to cut through the marketing jungle and remind us of what it is we are really trying to achieve – a healthy, clean head of hair.
Blushing Beauty – 7 Steps to Glowing Skin
October 8, 2007 by admin

How many of you shy away from using a blusher, simply because you are unsure how to apply it? At the cosmetics counter that is the most common comment we get from ladies. Yet blushers have the ability to brighten and revitalise your complexion in a stoke of a brush. Applied correctly blush can take ten years off your age and make you look glowing with health.
If you have a rounded face with full cheeks, it is best to apply blush to the cheekbones. If you have developed hollows or have sunkenness under the cheekbones it is best to concentrate on the apple of the cheeks. To find the apple of your cheek just smile. The rounded fatty area is the apple.
I can not over emphasize the need to be light handed. You can always build on the colour, but it’s hard to remove colour.
Start by dipping your brush into the colour then tapping the brush against a hard surface to remove excess colour. This ensures you don’t start with a great big dab of colour in the middle of your cheek.
Use light rounded brush strokes to blend the colour. And don’t forget; blend, blend, blend, outwards towards your ears.
Blush should be the finishing touch to any makeup. This way you can judge by the rest of your makeup how much blush you need. Don’t overdo the colour.
The best way to pick your blush colour is by the other colours you are wearing. Especially your lipstick. If you are wearing a pink lipstick you should wear a pink blush. Therefore it is important to have a few different colours of blush.
If you are using a cream blush, the same rules apply. Start lightly and blend well.
If you are still unsure of blush application, don’t be afraid to go to your nearest department store’s cosmetics counter. The girls there will be more than happy to take you through step by step and show you the best technique for your face.
It might take you a little while to get it right but it is well worth the effort.

Party Perfect – Hair with Brad Ngata

For up to the minute hair that takes you from office wear to evening glamour, look no further than these three great styles from Brad Ngata
‘Cheeky, Curled Bob’…
Who epitomises this look… Keira Knightly at the Pirates of the Caribbean premiere, Christina Aguilera.
Who wears it best…
* This look is ideal for collar-bone to medium length hair.
How to get the look…
1. Apply a palm full of Style Foam and work into damp hair, then blast with a blow-dryer until the hair is dry. Next, brush lightly with a Mason Pearson brush. ” At the back, section out from ear to ear and tie with a snag free elastic into a small ponytail, keeping the hair up off the nape.
2. Twist the pony into a flat coil and pin it using a bobby pin – this creates a shorter feel in the back with the contrasting length in the front.
3. Draw a low side part and, if there is a fringe, sweep it to the side.
4. Use a medium size curling tong and wind the hair working towards the face…once all the hair is tonged allow to cool.
5. For a more natural curl, loosen the tonged curls with your fingers and allow the top layers to bounce forward.
6. Finish with a slight amount of wax to make the hair glisten, and use a hair spray to make the style hold.
‘The High Pony’…
Who epitomises this look... Charlize Theron, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker. The pony was also a major hair feature at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week this year including Billion Dollar Babes, Azzollini and Natalie Wood.
Who wears it best... Everyone loves the versatility of the pony. Whereas once it was reserved for ‘bad hair days, it has now become a quick, convenient and sophisticated style for work, or glammed up for night. It’s a style that accentuates face shape – particularly cheekbones. The difficulty is creating it perfectly!
How to get the look… ”
1. Using a Mason Pearson brush, brush your hair smoothly and put all hair into a ponytail, high at the crown.
2. Ideally, use a gloss silicone spray to catch all loose hairs and smooth for the perfect sleek look.
3. To finish the look, take a one-centimetre strand of hair from the ponytail and wrap this hair around the elastic band, then secure with a hair wire or bobby pin.
4. Lightly spray with hair spray.
5. The most important secret to the ‘perfect pony’ is the use of a gloss silicone to smooth hair immaculately.
‘The Relaxed Chignon’…
Who epitomises this look… Kate Hudson – the ultimate in relaxed glamour
Who wears it best… Modern bohemians with a touch of glamour! This style had a number of manifestations over Mercedes Australian Fashion Week – from the Catherine Deneuve-inspired models with diamond hair clips at Fleur Wood to the edgy designer, Funkulo, who had leather thonging and beads to embellish the look.
How to get the look…
1. The key to this look is knowing that the hair must not be overworked and remains looking a little tousled, though the underlying glamour is still obvious.
2. Set the hair with hairspray and on hot rollers. When rollers are cool, brush the hair out and backcomb for texture and volume.
3. Pull the hair back loosely using the fingers as your brush.
4. Finish by simply nipping the hair in at the nape, rolling into a loose up-turned victory roll and securing with hair pins or even your favourite clip or jewellery piece, or even wrap leather binding around the hair for a more bohemian look.
5. For a prim look, try satin ribbon. ” Ensure hold by a light spray of hairspray.
Foot Soldiers – Tips for Confidently Stepping Out In The Sun
October 5, 2007 by admin

So when the sun starts to shine and the air is warming up and the shoe stores are swapping boots for strapy sandals in the display windows, the panic starts.
Thankfully we are told that it’s never too late to start pampering our feet.
The best way to start is by removing any hard, calloused skin. Use a foot file on dry skin, before you have a bath or shower. ( if skin has been softened by water, you may remove too much skin) Concentrate on the heels and the balls of the foot.
Moisturise your feet daily with special foot cream. These have been designed to hydrate the drier, thicker skin of your feet and stop the heels from cracking.
Make sure you vary the height of your shoe heels as this will keep your calf muscles flexible. If walking is painful or you spend a lot of time on your feet, be sure to use padded insoles to cushion the balls of your feet.
If wearing sandals, it is a must to apply SPF to your feet. The feet always get forgotten when it comes to sunscreen application yet they are perfectly angled to get most of the suns damaging rays and get sunburned.
Set time aside weekly to soak your feet. The foot spas you can buy are a great idea but all you need is a bucket full of warm water and a few essential oils. Peppermint, cypress, lavender, pine, frankincense and tea tree oils are all excellent choices. I like to add a couple of tablespoons full of powdered milk to make it really decadent.
If you like wearing nail polish on your toes, make sure they are well manicured. Nothing is worse than calling attention to unkept feet. Keep cuticles neat and well maintained. Always use base coat to stop nail polish from discolouring toe nails.
Treat yourself to a pedicure at the beginning of summer. It is much easier then, to maintain your feet in top condition.
With these healthy feet tips, you can be confidently stepping into those strapy sandals we see coming out for summer. Not only that but your feet will thank you in years to come as we say a step ahead of foot problems.
Jean Paul Gaultier- Gaultier2 Unisex Eau De Parfum Review
October 3, 2007 by admin
Livia’s Summary: It was very interesting to review a unisex fragrance. It has to be a subtle balance of sweet femininity and spicy masculinity. I feel this perfume excelled at it. The perfume is sweet and spicy so it’s not for the girls who like the softer, more floral scents. Personally this fragrance is too heavy for my liking however my husband loved it. This is good if you are buying it as a gift. Somebody in the house will like it.
Description: A fragrance that transcends gender & is made for humanity. Both ladies and men will adore this parfum that has seductive notes of vanilla, amber and musk with warm honey tones and a smooth velvety finish. If you weren’t keen on unisex scents of the past – don’t despair! This fragrance is nothing like any we have ever seen. Never blokey or girly, Gaultier designed this fragrance as a return to traditional perfumery when there were no women’s and men’s genres – just beautiful fragrances. Like a loving embrace, Gaultier2 is meant to be shared.
Available:
Myer, David Jones and Fragrance outlets.
Price: $105.00 (40ml) $142.00 (2x40ml) $170.00 (120ml)

Comments: At first I thought this fragrance was too over powering, but after about half an hour the Gaultier fragrance has a lovely warm sexy smell about it. My husband also likes this fragrance. It also lasts on the skin very well and can still be smelt after about eight hours.
![]()
Comments: I really liked the scent of Gaultier 2. To me, the smell was very fresh and clean, yet with a nice warm musky undertone. As the day went on I noticed the scent faded, so perhaps not the most long-lasting fragrance. I did get an unusual comment asking me if I was wearing men’s aftershave!! Overall a nice scent, but probably not a stand out for me.
![]()
Comments: The scent of this perfume is divine. I could smell it all day long! It has the vanilla/musk fragrance that is quite soft and subtle. If you could eat this fragrance I probably would it smells that yummy!! I got a few compliments from people when I wore it too! Being an Eau de Parfum it lasted all day too. As this is a unisex perfume, I asked my partner on his opinion and if he would wear it, and he said he would and that he quite liked the fragrance too – he didn’t think it was too ‘girly’. I am definitely going to go get a full size bottle of this.
![]()
Comments: It screams so Madonna and the 80s! A great come back! When I put it on I felt like going to the club and dancing straight away. It is not the usual fragrance that you will find on anybody else – it is bold and truly defines your individuality!
![]()
Comments: Value for money: Perfume is such a personal preference that it is hard to review. This is a unisex perfume but I found it quite floral and sweet. I do smell the vanilla and musk; it is a pleasant scent and not overpowering. But not something I would sigh over. I can see teens and early 20′s wearing this scent as it is light, summery and sweet with a hint of spice. But not a perfume of my choice.
