Livia Mercer :: December 2006

Dear Livia:
What makes foundation separate and wear off in patches? I have tried different foundations and different moisturisers and am not sure what causes it. Some foundations have been fine and then all of a sudden it will start to separate so I'm not sure if it is hormonal, the weather, the make-up or my skin care - it is strange because the problem comes and goes which makes me think it could be hormonal or the weather.

I have combination skin, shiny t-zone but can get dehydrated cheeks. In the gold coast summers my make up tends to melt off my face or my skin absorbs it, yet the 'shine free' foundations are usually too drying.

With two boys under two and a busy lifestyle, I need something simple and quick to apply with good coverage but still looking natural (semi matte) and will last all day with no touch ups - any suggestions (not a huge fan of colorstay and that sometimes separates too or is too drying)
Cheers Bec - QLD

Hello Bec Thank you for your question. The reason the foundation separates or wears off in patches is because it does not suit your skin type. With combination skin you really have to use a foundation that is specially formulated to cater for the different areas of your skin.

First of all make sure that the skincare you are using is the right one for your combination skin as this can have an effect on the foundation that you apply over the top of it. The skin needs to be well cleansed but not dried out.

Also make sure your moisturiser is not too oily for the summer months; perhaps try an oil-free moisturiser. As for the foundation, luckily these days we have a few choices. Following are a few excellent foundations you can try that are ideal for the combination skins.

(Your Comments & Questions...con't)

Clinique Perfectly Real Foundation $47.00 has self-adjusting coverage and colour, meaning that the foundation will balance the complexion and will match your exact skin colour while being almost weightless on the skin. I love using this as it gives you a flawless look.Go and try it at your nearest Clinique counter. Also try Lancôme Color Id SPF8 $60. L'Oreal Ideal Balance $27.95, Maybelline Ever Fresh $17.95.

For the hot Queensland summers I always find that tinted moisturisers work best. Try Clarins Hydra-Balance Tinted Moisturiser SPF 6 $55. The great thing about these products is most of them contain sunscreen so that is one less product you have to layer on your skin.

Hope this helps you out.
